Joseph Gordon-Levitt Talks The SANDMAN Movie

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Talks The SANDMAN Movie

Joseph Gordon-Levitt on what drew him to Warner Bros.' adaptation of the brilliant Neil Gaiman comic book, The Sandman. Levitt also answers whether he'd be open to acting in a Marvel Studios film.

Jospeh Gordon-Levitt Sandman movie

"Early days. Very, very early days," said Joseph Gordon-Levitt to IGN on the subject of The Sandman movie project that he's currently confirmed to produce. Not clear, is whether Levitt will also play the lead role of the Lord of Dreams. 'Lots of potential, but it's still very early," was all he would say on the possibility of playing the titular character. Levitt was more forthcoming on what drew him to the project, stating, " I love just the basic concept of it - just the concept of personifying Dream, along with all of his brothers and sisters, the seven Endless personifying Death, personifying Destruction and Delirium and Destiny and Desire and Despair. I mean, that's just a fascinating and, I think, a really cinematic concept. You look at the art of Sandman, and it just looks spectacular. I love big, spectacular movies, but oftentimes big, spectacular movies sort of get stuck in a rut. They go down certain paths that end in big explosions or whatever. Sandman has so much opportunity to do something that's on a grand, grand scale, but really unlike your average big, grand-scale, spectacular movie. I guess that's the tip of the iceberg."

Talk then moved to Robert Rodriguez's Sin City: A Dame To Kill For and then concluded with whether Joseph would be open to starring in a Marvel Studios film? The Dark Knight Rises actor doesn't seem particularly opposed. "Yeah, I don't pay as much attention to the categories or genres of things. I pay attention to what the material is about. Does it resonate with me? Does it inspire me? Who are the collaborators? That kind of thing."

David S. Goyer (Batman vs Superman), who now appears to be something of a godfather for the budding DC Cinematic Universe, wrote the treatment/pitch for the film which got WB interested. It's unknown if he will write the actual script for The Sandman movie. It's also unconfirmed at present (but heavily rumored) that in addition to serving as producer, Levitt will also direct and star.

A Sandman movie can be really awesome! It can be as visionary as movie like MoS and Man of Steel while also have such a rich story like Lord of the Rings.

I hope it's based on the Nocturnes with him retrieving his items and rebuilding his Kindom while also adapting to the new era he missed.
JoeMomma29 - 1/11/2014, 6:34 PM
This could be so good.
JoeMomma29 - 1/11/2014, 6:38 PM
I just watched HER this past Friday and I could see Mr. J Phoenix playing someone like Sandman.
RexDartEskimoSpy - 1/11/2014, 6:41 PM
Keep Goyer the hell away from the project, make sure Gaiman's on board, and don't let JGL play Morpheus, and I'm all in. ;^)
McNyagano - 1/11/2014, 6:41 PM
Goyer is writing the script?

marvel72 - 1/11/2014, 6:44 PM
haven't got a problem with a sandman film being made, however i have a problem with levitt directing & starring in it.

i just see him as the wrong choice.
MrCBM56 - 1/11/2014, 6:44 PM
What?! JGL could own as Dream. He's A great actor.
MrCBM56 - 1/11/2014, 6:46 PM
Neil is involved. Didn't JGL confirm that in a tweet?

This movie is in great hands!

Dream is a great underrated character.
ALmazing - 1/11/2014, 6:46 PM
This movie needs to be directed by Daren Aranofski, if you've seen the fountain you know what I mean.

@MrCBM56 MoS and Man of Steel is one movie lol
Firgosaurus - 1/11/2014, 6:48 PM
Goyer created the pitch retards.

the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th draft is gonna be handled by someone else. Believe that.

Geez you guys can't read.
MrCBM56 - 1/11/2014, 6:50 PM

Haha thanks! I meant to type Avengers in there.
pickleweasel2 - 1/11/2014, 6:51 PM
Goyer is NOT writing the script. People need to learn how to read.
JoeMomma29 - 1/11/2014, 6:59 PM
Freaking people need to learn how to read!!!!!!
batesmotel - 1/11/2014, 6:59 PM
Goyer will [frick] you up
PunkRockJesus - 1/11/2014, 7:08 PM
I could definitely see JGL playing Dream. Make it happen! And quick! [frick]!
McNyagano - 1/11/2014, 7:16 PM
This article was edited, when I read it, it DID say Goyer was penning the script.
OrionPax - 1/11/2014, 7:18 PM
I think Levitt has range and depth, and Gaiman wouldn't let this be shit,he cares too much about it
fartmanbegins - 1/11/2014, 7:45 PM
if you look at the sam keith version...he looks very much benedict cumberbatch...I know this has been said a million times over ad nauseum.. but read Morpheus' parts with cumberbatchs voice in your head and tell me otherwise. He has a very commanding voice and presence that would be lacking if levitt got the role (he is not very imposing nor commanding...though he is a fairly competent actor) that's just my feeling though...who knows who will get the part.
TotesMagotes12 - 1/11/2014, 7:58 PM
Could you imagine this movie with Aronofsky directing, JGL producing and possibly helping write, and Cumberbatch starring
fartmanbegins - 1/11/2014, 7:58 PM
Naw....300? was a revisionist historical thing unto itself, sin city? a noir throwback. the dreaming should be just limitless fantasy....colorful...strange creatures kind of like a light hearted fanciful take on a heironymous bosch painting mixed with Salvador dali. remember, gaimans inspiration was a lot of high fantasy literature
RRA - 1/11/2014, 7:59 PM
JGL was pursued for GOTG and DOCTOR STRANGE and ANT-MAN. He doesn't want to work with Marvel. He rather would aim high and try to direct one himself. Good for him, I respect ambition and blazing your own trail.

Not saying it'll work or be a good film, but you have to respect him wanting to try.
GliderMan - 1/11/2014, 8:08 PM
Just please don't make me wait five years.
SuperPickle - 1/11/2014, 8:26 PM
I just can't see Levitt as Morpheus. I may be wrong, but he just doesn't seem like a good candidate for the lead. In fact, I honestly can't think of anyone who seems right for the role.

TotesMagotes12 - 1/11/2014, 7:58 PM

Could you imagine this movie with Aronofsky directing, JGL producing and possibly helping write, and Cumberbatch starring

I actually dream (yeah!) about an Aronofsky Sandman movie starring Cumberbatch for some time now. Seriously, this combination plus JGL, and with Gaiman on board to look over things, could be one of the [frick]ing coolest things ever!! :D
MightyZeus - 1/11/2014, 9:04 PM
I'm strangely looking forward to this film even though i dont know much about Sandman. I knew he was featured with The Justice League in a comic book. I think this film should get pushed out quickly.
NoPhucksGiven - 1/11/2014, 9:29 PM
A rip off of the rip off that is inception. This will be ass.
Rokyn - 1/11/2014, 9:42 PM

Once again you speak out of your ass again.
Have you even read a story involving Dream? This has to be one of the most crazy comments I have ever seen. The Sandman is absolutely NOTHING like Inception. Zero..nada.. Do yourself a favor and go read the entire run and realize how dumb you sound. This has potential and I cannot absolutely wait to see Dream on live action.
NoPhucksGiven - 1/11/2014, 9:53 PM

go run with scissors then fall down a flight of stairs.
DelTorite - 1/11/2014, 9:56 PM
I can see JGL as the Corinthian if he's willing to dye his hair.
loki668 - 1/11/2014, 9:59 PM
The only way this works is if Rob Liefeld writes it and M. Night Shyamalan directs it. Danny Elfman does the score and Mos Def does the narration.
sikwon - 1/11/2014, 10:02 PM
JGL will star, no question. The Sandman is absolutely amazing and as much as I would love to see it I wonder hoe well it would translate. If they could pull this off it would be amazing!!!!
Rokyn - 1/11/2014, 10:04 PM

Hahaaa oh man I love when new guys come on here and think they are so badass on the internet. Listen buddy, try to actually do something called "reading" like a book, article, or a comic before criticizing something that I assume you have probably never even heard before.
ThePowerCosmic - 1/11/2014, 10:13 PM
I would Love to see a great Sandman film. Just keep Gaiman close on this one to keep it from going the Jonah Hex route.
fartmanbegins - 1/11/2014, 10:18 PM
PhuckYoo......more like phuckOFF. I love Nolan but his interpretation of dreamscapes was downright turgid(though it was integral to the plot to keep the dream as grounded inreality as possible to keep up the charade and fool the mark). it is quite obvious youre probably some high school wannabe fanboy who thinks just because he say the Nolan bat trilogy and the marvel phase one films that you're some kinda expert....tell you what walk you're lil baby nuts to the local comic shop or your some research on sandman...That's SANDMAN.written by neil gaiman son..not the first iteration by gardner fox...and not the second one by joe simon...but neiiiil gaiiiiman. When you're done reading it all...come back and have an opinion...till then shut the hell up.
JoeMomma29 - 1/11/2014, 10:23 PM
Anyone who takes their screen name from a Austin Power's movie is an idiot to begin with.
fartmanbegins - 1/11/2014, 10:32 PM
I was about to say Chappelle show but that was phyuck yu. lol
Jollem - 1/11/2014, 10:47 PM
do this right. do this justice

Jollem - 1/11/2014, 10:49 PM

TotesMagotes12 - 1/11/2014, 11:09 PM
The possibility of Sandman, Justice League Dark, and Affleck's Justice League or Batman gets me very excited about the future of the DCU
