UPDATE: ELFQUEST Moves Closer To The Big Screen

UPDATE: ELFQUEST Moves Closer To The Big Screen

A movie adaptation of Wendy and Richard Pini's beloved comic series has been languishing in development Hell in one form or another for many years now, but we may just see some real steps toward production now that Stephanie Thorpe and Paula Rhodes have acquired the rights..

You have probably seen Stephanie Thorpe and Paula Rhodes' Elfquest: A Fan Imagining short already, and now it seems the duo's love and dedication to the franchise has paid off, as Variety report that they've acquired the movie rights to the 35-year old comic book series by Wendy and Richard Pini.

"With their deep love and understanding of the property, they represent a new direction for ElfQuest...new creative energy and new connections in the larger media." said Wendy Pini of the acquisition. Of course this is only the first step in what will likely be a long road to seeing Cutter, Skywise and co. up on the big screen. Warner Bros. had previously attempted to get an Elfquest movie into production until the rights lapsed earlier in the year.

UPDATE: Here are quotes from Thorpe and Rhodes from the official press release..

"We are thrilled to bring ElfQuest, a tale that has influenced our storytelling and imaginations, to life for new and existing fans," said Thorpe, “The global fan support we've received has been amazing."

Rhodes added, "When we discovered our shared lifelong love for this series we were spurred to action. ElfQuest gave us heroines we could aspire to be and its magic shaped us, ultimately leading us into the creative entertainment sphere. We owe it a lot!"

Starring Orlando Bloom and everyone else who couldn't find consistent work beyond Middle-Earth.

good to see rob zombie getting acting work..lol
loki668 - 11/6/2012, 9:39 AM

I understood it's importance, I just wasn't a fan. My Syfy comment was due to a fear of this being timed to cash in on the Hobbit craze (ala Transmorphers). After seeing who has the rights, however, this might not be terrible. Then again, it might be.

As long as Rob Zombie never gets directing work again, then so much the better.

I assumed as much. I just didn't want you to think that I was arbitrarily trolling (or trolling at all, for that matter). I was COMPLETELY serious about Orlando Bloom and some of the other "victims" from Middle-Earth, however;)

@loki668 LOL orlando bloom

I bet he and Gimli ended up together like some messed-up version of "The Odd Couple." Come to think of it, that would be a series worth watching!

If it is anywhere near the quality of the fan imagining video they did, then it will only warrant a straight-to-dvd release. Terrible casting and overall feel. I couldn't imagine paying money to see that kind of production on the big screen.

Something tells me they'll have access to a SLIGHTLY bigger budget for the movie..
RorMachine - 11/6/2012, 10:30 AM
Orlando Bloom SUCKED in those movies, he was the weak link. No screen presence whatsoever..so just because he's worn a pair of elf ears in the past, please don't assume he'd be good as Cutter or any other character in Elfquest!

"Something tells me they'll have access to a SLIGHTLY bigger budget for the movie.."

If one doesn't know how film something that makes sense and cast properly, it doesn't matter how big of a budget they have. ;-)
RorMachine - 11/6/2012, 10:47 AM
They're the rights holders, they won't be the film makers...or at least, they won't be if they have any sense. They may decide to go the idie route but if this movie ever wants to see a cinema screen they'll need to get the backing of a big studio and enlist the skills of a good director.
Ranger14 - 11/6/2012, 10:47 AM
I would say that Bloom sucking in LOTR would be of minority opinion. I thoroughly enjoyed him in the role, as did most people I know. Different strokes.
Ranger14 - 11/6/2012, 10:49 AM
Well...let's just hope they don't have much to do with any creative or production input.

Could be cool.

Hope the movie gets good actors, script and Director.

I wonder who could direct it?
superpooper - 11/6/2012, 3:41 PM
This could be cool but it would have to be a hard R to stand out amongst things like the Hobbit and GOT. I don't see too much interest in this property outside of hardcore fans who are already aware of it though. I dunno. Could be cool, but could be very very dumb as well.

For those who don't know, you can read all of the elfquest comics free online. Go make your own choice. I just started, and it's got solid artwork, a good story and some of the best characterization I've seen.
Tevii - 11/6/2012, 10:52 PM
Im not too happy to hear about this. It will be a low budget DVD

BUT if they can cast Jared Padalecki as Cutter. PERFECT
Tevii - 11/6/2012, 10:53 PM
FTR.......Elfquest is an amazing read. Best fantasy comic and LONG OVERDO for a great movie adaptation.

Yet another in a LONG LONG LINE of properties WB has had they they dropped the ball on.. FU-WB
AlexDeLarge87 - 11/7/2012, 12:16 AM
I think Kellan Lutz could make a pretty good Cutter.
Rothwilder - 11/8/2012, 6:50 AM
Would be a tough thing to find actresses that could pull off both the beauty, compassion, and totally different personalities of all the different women.

Wonder who would play Dewshine?
