"Nobody Else Can Play THE HULK Like I Could" Says Lou Ferrigno

The actor, who portrayed the Green Goliath in the classic Incredible Hulk tv series, feels that because he actually played the character himself as opposed to mo-cap, that he was able to show a different kind of emotion than the later CGI incarnations..

All of our big screen incarnations of The Hulk have utilized motion capture to bring a completely CGI character to life, while of course sticking with a human actor (Eric Bana, Edward Norton and Mark Ruffalo..so far) to play the big fella's alter ego, Bruce Banner. But before that The Hulk himself was played by Lou Ferrigno, under a few layers of green makeup and prosthetics, in the CBS television show between 1977 and 1982, while Bill Bixby handled Banner duty. It seems that because of this, Ferrigno feels he brought us the best possible version of the character yet. “I was the first to bring superhero muscles to the screen and to make it more believable. There’s still people who prefer to watch the old show over the newer things because it’s real, not CGI,” the former bodybuilder tells The LA Times. "The Hulk was the beginning of me, a platform as an actor to grow. I don't think anybody else can play the Hulk like I could. I was able to show emotions even with all of the makeup. I don't think it can be duplicated." What do you guys think? Was Lou the best Hulk? Sound off below.

He was a badass. He's to Hulk what Adam West is to Batman.

Also I really lie how the screams Hulk did in the Avengers used Ferringo's voice.
BobGarlen - 9/3/2013, 11:04 AM
The entire run of the show is the best iteration of the Hulk ever, because it got things right, it wasn't fun or super, it was a greek tragedy in a weekly format.
jimoakley666 - 9/3/2013, 11:04 AM
Sorry, Lou, but Ruffalo handed you your arse.

Where does he say he was the best Hulk?
Highflyer - 9/3/2013, 11:12 AM
Well technically, he's right. He didn't do motion capture, he actually played the hulk! Norton's Hulk is my favorite one though. He was savage!
knocturnalzen10 - 9/3/2013, 11:14 AM
yea he's right the roids really helped him express more angrer emotions ....................
PLUSH - 9/3/2013, 11:15 AM
Sigh. Ruffalo was the best Hulk < my opinion
Greengo - 9/3/2013, 11:15 AM
I'll say he's right in that none of the actors who played Bruce Banner could play the Hulk like he could, but then again they didn't really even play the Hulk, except Ruffalo, but even Ruffalo didn't play the Hulk like Lou.

Then again Lou definitely couldn't play Bruce (David) Banner like any of the actor's who did.

It's kind of a moot point there's nothing.to compare it with. It's apples and oranges.

Now I bet The Rock would give Lou a run for his money.
Greengo - 9/3/2013, 11:17 AM
^^^Grif deserved it.
thewonderer - 9/3/2013, 11:17 AM
Butthurt Ruffalo fans incoming
SpectacularJoSh - 9/3/2013, 11:18 AM
He doesn't think it can be duplicated? LMFAO...Lou,Lou,Lou...I appreciate what he did for the 70s show....but c'mon....be realistic for [frick]s sake.

Bill Bixby Appreciation Post

Bearjew - 9/3/2013, 11:19 AM
No one else could play that role as cheerily and retarded as you did. You're right
yinyangpalms - 9/3/2013, 11:22 AM
Ferrigno did a great job as The Hulk. Ruffalo did a great job as Banner and as the CGI Hulk.

You can't really have a Face-Off of their portrayals when Lou did 4+ Seasons of the Hulk and Ruffalo about 10 minutes as The Hulk which renders jimoakley666's comment "Sorry, Lou, but Ruffalo handed you your arse" invalid.

Overall we have 2 very different Hulks that were great. Lou should feel very proud of his Hulk and the Hulk series which is still followed nearly 40 years later!

If I had to choose between the 2 I would have to side with Lou.
The abundance of great moments he gave as The Hulk outweighs the 10 minutes of cool Hulk in Avengers.

Greengo - 9/3/2013, 11:23 AM
Lol come on cut the guy some slack, he's got a speech impediment.

No deaf person could duplicate his performance.
TMcFarlaneFan - 9/3/2013, 11:27 AM
@Greengo Lou does plenty of public appearances. Feel free to say that shit to his face and get snapped in two any time you wish.

Lou would beat that ass!
jimoakley666 - 9/3/2013, 11:29 AM
@yingyangpalms - You're invalid. If someone does a better job in ten minutes compared to several years, then that's an arse handed, you tit.
AvalonKnight - 9/3/2013, 11:29 AM
Kind of pretentious! @themanfrommars, you should have thrown in a pic of Hugh Jackman with your appreciation post.
thewonderer - 9/3/2013, 11:31 AM
Except Ruffalo didn't act as the Hulk jim. Sure, there was motion cap but that's nothing compared to the dedication of actually making yourself green and doing your own stunts.
TheManFromMars - 9/3/2013, 11:33 AM

Why should I put a pic of Hugh Jackman in a Bill Bixby Appreciation Post?

Is this some kind of internet joke I'm not getting?

Whatever the case may be, have this:
Indy - 9/3/2013, 11:38 AM
CGI hulk sucks he's too big.
sinthegreat - 9/3/2013, 11:45 AM
He is to hulk what Kevin Conroy is to batman
Tony93 - 9/3/2013, 11:46 AM
hugh jackman looks like bill bixbys brother
StarkReactor - 9/3/2013, 11:47 AM
You clearly know how movies are made. Yes, because Ruffalo had complete control and it was HIS decision to not paint himself green and do his own stunts.

Stop trolling genius. We get it, you hate everything Avengers related.
cdpacheco89 - 9/3/2013, 11:48 AM
Yea, except for when ruffalo did the same thing youre talking about WITH modern technology and did the best job of acting the hulk and showing the emotion. And @hero24.....too big? Do you read comics, or even know what you're talking about?? I'm sorry you are a f*cktard
WeaponX93 - 9/3/2013, 11:48 AM
Go Lou! All the haters, did you even read the damn thing? He said the CGI couldn't replicate the emotion an actor can, is all. That being said, I always loved Lou's Hulk, and though it might look silly, I want to see him lined up with the Avengers lol
Highflyer - 9/3/2013, 11:56 AM
@MrSundayNight you are kidding right?
dckizzle - 9/3/2013, 11:57 AM
Bill bixby was the first David banner he was the best never forget the tv series
Greengo - 9/3/2013, 11:58 AM
@MOM: "Lou would beat dat ass"

Why? I'm not talking shit I'm just trying to give the haters some perspective.
OdinsBeard - 9/3/2013, 11:58 AM
i think batista's drax will give the classic hulk a run for his money!

i hate when celebs come out and say shit like this. "it was way better back in my day because.." Stallone did the same thing "real muscles!" apparently these guys think taking steroids gives you "real" muscle.

I would like a smaller version of the hulk done in movies though. not saying he should be human sized but pretty close. to me that makes him seem even stronger! like all this strength is coming from a smaller package. 'cause when he's so big it's like of course he's going to be that strong!
yinyangpalms - 9/3/2013, 12:00 PM
@jimoakley666 Your driveling is meaningless and invalid.

You LIKED the Avengers Hulk more than Lou's. That is you preference. And Ruffalo did a great job in his 10 minutes of CGI Hulk.

Lou did a great job for years as the Hulk. And he even did some great voiceover work for the series.

10 minutes of great can't beat 5 years of great.

Your boyfriend is lying to you. Lasting 10 minutes is not "Kicking Arse".
supermarioworldE - 9/3/2013, 12:00 PM
No one has played the Hulk like Ferrigno because they've all been cgi.
bparis - 9/3/2013, 12:02 PM
Of course he was the best Hulk. he gave 110% like he always does. 110%.....lol Good ol' Lou and is repetitiveness! he played that line out in every season of the apprentice.
Highflyer - 9/3/2013, 12:04 PM
While I liked Ruffalo's hulk, I didn't like the ape movements. Norton's hulk showed facial expressions of pain, sadness, anger and confusion. I'm sure Ruffalo's hulk will do the same if he gets his own solo film though.
AvalonKnight - 9/3/2013, 12:07 PM

They look so much alike that I doubt everyone would catch it at first. I once read that Hugh was interested in doing a biopic about Bixby.
Seejay - 9/3/2013, 12:07 PM

Well he is right. No one could play Hulk as he did.

Without CGI.

But certainly prefer him with CGI as done in the Avengers.
Brainiac13 - 9/3/2013, 12:08 PM
Lou......is the one I grew up with.......but Nortons Hulk was the best....but bill bixby's Banner is the best.
