Superman Movies

Release Date: 1978 - Warner Bros.

Cast: Marlon Brando - Jor-El, Gene Hackman - Lex Luthor, Christopher Reeve - Superman/Clark Kent, Ned Beatty - Otis, Jackie Cooper - Perry White, Glenn Ford - Jonathan Kent, Trevor Howard - 1st Elder, Margot Kidder - Lois Lane, Valerie Perrine - Eve Teschmacher, Phyllis Thaxter - Martha Kent, Susannah York - Lara, Jeff East - Young Clark Kent.

Summary: Unable to convince his peers of impending doom, Jor-El, scientist of the planet Krypton, sends his infant son Kal-El in a rocketship to Earth just as Krypton explodes. Crashing down in the midwest, the boy is adopted by farmers Jonathan and Martha Kent. After realizing the boy is "special" and not of this Earth, the Kents name the boy Clark and raise him as their own--keeping his wonderous abilities under wraps. After his adoptive Dad dies of a heart attack, Clark journeys into the frozen arctic where he builds his fortress of solitude with the help of Kryptonian science--a crystal he finds in his spaceship. There he learns of his true identity and powers from an amazingly interactive holograph of Jor-El. He is educated in all things Kryptonian for an indetermined period of time. When he leaves the arctic, he is older and understands what what his "purpose in life" is supposed to be. He immediately flies to Metropolis and gets a job at the Daily Planet newspaper where he sets up his alias as the "mild mannered reporter". Not long after that, things occur that give Superman his chance on the scene--culminating in a showdown with arch-villan Lex Luther, who plans on remaking the California coastline to his own specifications using a couple nuclear missles.
