Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is now in theaters, and Paramount Pictures' decision to release the movie midweek to get a jump on this weekend's competition appears to have paid off.

After the Seth Rogen-produced animated reboot took in a not-too-shabby $3.85 million from Tuesday preview screenings, the Heroes in a Half-Shell's latest big-screen adventure looks set to make between $35M and $40M over the course of its five-day domestic debut.

This may not sound particularly impressive when compared to, say, an MCU movie, but when you factor a relatively thrifty budget of $70 million (before marketing costs, granted), Mutant Mayhem is off to a pretty good start.

Plus, positive reviews and word-of-mouth could well propel the film past projections. Mutant Mayhem is currently sitting at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, and has been awarded an A CinemaScore.

“After years of being sheltered from the human world, the Turtle brothers set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers through heroic acts. Their new friend April O’Neil helps them take on a mysterious crime syndicate, but they soon get in over their heads when an army of mutants is unleashed upon them.”

Micah Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr., Nicolas Cantu and Brady Noon will voice the roles of Donatello, Michelangelo, Leonardo and Raphael, respectively. The cast also includes Jackie Chan as Splinter, Hannibal Buress as Genghis Frog, Rose Byrne as Leatherhead, Ice Cube as Superfly, Natasia Demetriou as Wingnut, Ayo Edebiri as April O’Neil, Giancarlo Esposito as Baxter Stockman, Post Malone as Ray Fillet, Paul Rudd as Mondo Gecko, and Maya Rudolph as Cynthia Utrom.

Jeff Rowe (The Mitchells vs. the Machines) directed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, which is produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

First movies in a trilogy always make the least, maybe Paramount is understanding after D&D. Hearing Go Ninja Go triggered me like Ratatouille lol

Despite a few changes to the backstory and some characterizations, I thoroughly enjoyed this one.

And the ending definitely has me wondering how part 2 and the tv show will play out.

Sounds like it's not going to turn a profit.

@Dingus - at $70 million budget plus whatever the marketing cost was, it needs at least $200 million to break even. Starting the week off at $30-40 million isn't good.

Don’t care to see it. Way too many changes. I’m older and grew up with the original movies so I don’t see me really liking this version.

@B0H1CA - I grew up with the Mirage comics and the 1990 movie, and this new one is fantastic. Don't be that guy.

Some people are hardcore against it and I wonder what bothers them more: that they made it in this style with this voice cast or that people are really responding positively to it.

While I like some 'changes' more than others, I think people complaining about TMNT lore is weird.
The comics are different from the show, the show is different from some of the movies. There's so many differing versions of the Turtles that saying it should be one 'way' seems reductive of the versatility of the property.

Also this movie was awesome!

@ThePott - that's kinda my view as well. Yes, ideally you'd want it to be close to the original vision, or just making slight adjustments. But we've had SO MANY versions of the property by now, I'm just happy if it's executed well.

@ThouBear8 - I have my ideal version of the turtles is a mix between mirage and the toon, so the 1990 movie, but Mutant Mayhem is absolutely fantastic and leagues above the stupid michael bay junk

I love the Turtles and saw the 9s movie at age 15 or 16 and the cartoon.

The new movie is great and will overperform hopefully.
