Newly released concept art from The Flash has showcased the villainous Dark Flash, offering a better idea of how the monstrous Speed Force baddie was dreamed up for the troubled DC Comics adaptation...

Prior to The Flash's release, various pieces of merchandise confirmed a monstrous version of Dark Flash would appear in the movie. Based on early leaks, the villain's role was somewhat slimmed down in the final cut, though he certainly still managed to make an impact.

It was during the closing moments of the movie that we learned Dark Flash was, in fact, the younger Barry Allen who had spent decades attempting to change his timeline's fate. Unable to save Batman and Supergirl, he created a paradox by pulling his older self into the past and stranding him there.

Ezra Miller donned a practical costume and prosthetics to play his older self, and we now have a closer look at some early concept art. In that, we get a better idea of how this original new take on the character was brought to life in the movie which limped past $100 million at the U.S. box office this week.

Check out these Dark Flash designs from The Flash in the Tweet below.

Worlds collide in The Flash when Barry uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past. But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no Super Heroes to turn to.

That is, unless Barry can coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian...albeit not the one he's looking for. Ultimately, to save the world that he is in and return to the future that he knows, Barry's only hope is to race for his life. But will making the ultimate sacrifice be enough to reset the universe?

The movie stars Ezra Miller, Sasha Calle, Michael Shannon, Ron Livingston, Maribel Verdu, Kiersey Clemons, Antje Traue, and Michael Keaton.

The Flash is now playing in theaters.

I feel like this character read better on paper than he ended up being in the film. Another missed opportunity.

Hey Josh. Remember when you tried to say it made no sense for dark flash to get the flash to help him, even though he specifically mentioned he needed the flash there so he would exist?
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 7/4/2023, 2:23 PM
@Origame - But if he already existed.... aw fergeddit. I'm too drunk to think.
Origame
Origame - 7/4/2023, 2:35 PM
@ObserverIO - I get the confusion. But in case you didn't see the movie I'll explain.

So the dark flash is a future version of the Barry from the Flashpoint timeline we see. And this Barry didn't have powers like the main flash did until the main flash visited him and gave him powers. This and the series of events that followed led to him becoming dark flash.

So basically it's a causal loop. His existence is dependent on the flash being there to give Flashpoint Barry powers.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 7/4/2023, 3:13 PM
@Origame - And yet he still disappears when young Barry kills even younger Barry.

Now if 2013 Barry never grows up to become Dark Flash, then Dark Flash couldn't push 2023 Barry out into 2013 in the first place.

It's a paradox... A Flashpoint Paradox.
Origame
Origame - 7/4/2023, 3:37 PM
@ObserverIO - ...I mean yeah. After he set the wheels in motion for him to eventually exist that doesn't negate him killing himself in the past.

If you think about it this is a general problem with the comics as well. If Barry prevented his mother's death, then he creates a timeline she never died, meaning Barry had no reason to travel back in time meaning he wasn't there to prevent her death.

And they also do causal loops in the flash comics too. The reverse flash went back in time to kill Barry's mother, leading to him becoming a forensic scientist, which led to him becoming the flash, then inspiring eobard to become the reverse flash and wanting to kill Barry's mother in the first place.

In fiction, all these concepts from causal loops to paradoxes can be explored.

@Origame - Causal loops and paradoxes at the same time is like cocktails and german beer at the same time. I'm starting to regret my choices this evening already, lol.

@ObserverIO - I mean, they did that in back to the future.

@Origame - Marty and Doc were drunk on german beer and cocktails? Explains the whole trilogy.

I would just like to say that this is the ugliest design for a villain in a CBM since Gatorade leaking garbage bag Doom from Fant4stic.

I wonder how many people who are shitting on this movie, actually went and saw it. And even if they did go see it, did they just hate watch it, with the idea they hate it already in their heads?

I watched it, and thought it was very good. Goofy at times, but pretty damn good overall. A lot of good scenes, and a good story.

@PatientXero -

I went and watched it, with no biases in mind
I thought it was enjoyable,
for the most part
it had its issues but overall nothing too exciting about it

it wasn't the best cbm of the year, that's for sure.

This entire movie is a PRIME example of what happens when you take an already proven successful storyline and try and do your own thing with it.

For all the haters who whine about fans who want to stick to source material, this was a flaming turd, and not just bc of Ezra.

A story can be written a million different ways, there are countless variations that could have occurred, but the original Flashpoint resonated w/ fans and was a vastly superior story.

Every director wants to put his spin on things, when the fact remains, if their adapting a successful comic book storyline, they should walk a very fine line w/ deviating from the source material too much or you end up with something that’s supposed to be based on something that works, but ends up failing bc it’s not what worked.

Some of the best live action takes based on literature are as close to the original vision as possible. It’s a form of respect and acknowledgment that you may but probably won’t improve on what is already known to be good, or even great. Directors who insist on changing fundamental aspects are usually misguided and egocentric.

Had this been a live action retelling of the initial story, ending with Bens Batman getting a message from his Father who lives in an alternate reality, this would have hit much harder.

Chalk up another fail to DC and the terrible decision makers who run what was once a respected comic book company. Now it’s a joke.

So much potential flushed down the toilet

I tried finally watching this movie at my local cinema this weekend, but there’s practically no screenings left anymore given how badly it’s flopped.

So I ended up watching Transformers ROTB instead. Wish I’d waited for the home release, least cinematic Transformers movie so far.

Some people shouldn't direct movies, specially with big budgets
