Magneto Solo Movie Put on the Back Burner

Studio exec and script writer give us insight into the future of the project.
According to recent comments made by X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner, Magneto's solo venture is far from becoming a reality. She said that, while Goyer's script is "brilliant," the chances of the movie actually making it to theaters are dwindling. Apparently it's the lowest rung of an X-Men ladder that already consists of a Wolverine sequel, a Deadpool spin off and anX-Men: First Class origin story.

Scribe David Goyer has an abundance of prospective comic book movies on his agenda including Ghost Rider 2, Supermax(the Green Arrow version) and a fan awaited sequel to The Dark Knight. Not to mention the ABC TV series Flashforward that he is overseeing. So what is his take on the Magneto Origins movie he wrote the script for?

In an interview with MTV News, Goyer said "I tend to agree with her, [Fox is] still trying to figure out what they want to do, whether or not they'll do a different 'X-Men' movie next or another 'Wolverine' movie next. If they want to make 'Magneto,' that's awesome. In the meantime, I'm just going to move on with my other projects."

If the Magneto movie was pushed up on the Fox agenda, would Goyer mind the studio involving another writer? "Even taking 'FlashForward' aside, I'm booked up for another year and a half," he said. "I have no complaints."

Oh Well for Ian Mckeller!

They can't wait to get out crap like Deadpool and put this on the backburner.

Don't get me wrong, I want to see a Deadpool movie. A GOOD Deadpool movie, but this film has the potential to be a very deep and moving picture. It's setting is WWII era Germany, there is a lot of story to be told here when you through a mutant into a concentration camp. The possibilities are endless. With a good writing team, this could be a very...spiritual movie.

Or it could be shit...
gtrman - 11/10/2009, 9:20 PM
poor magneto, but we definately NEED a Deadpool movie asap, and it has to be done perfect and correctly or i will kill fox 4 ruining my favorite comic character twice, its already happened once!
RockNRollCC - 11/10/2009, 9:25 PM
I say good riddance. I used to be excited for the Magneto movie, but now there are so many other X-Men related movies I'd rather see. And honestly, if there is gonna be a WWII movie in the Marvel universe, I'd much prefer Captain America. Both that and Magneto might be a bit much. If they do an X-Men: First Class movie, they could easily touch on some of the history between Xavier and Magneto...that should be good enough.
Bamf7 - 11/10/2009, 9:34 PM
yeah, as compelling a character as magneto is I'm not that interested in two hours of him, especially if he is not played by Ian. Although I'd rather see magneto or a first class movie before another god awful wolverine or deadpool movie.
thwhtGuardian - 11/10/2009, 9:59 PM
This movie would be soooo damn boring I'm bored just writing about it.
California - 11/10/2009, 10:03 PM
@ gtrman

there is a LOT more to magneto's past then him in a concentration camp. i would think that would only be the very beginning of the movie. and for everyone saying it would be boring, there are plenty of things that happened to magneto. concentration camp. he gets out, later seeks revenge on the germans that held him there. could you imagine how cool it would be to see an enraged mags take on the german military??

but then, he meets magda, falls in love and has a kid, only to have his home burned to the ground by the mutant-hating townsfolk with magda and his daughter inside, as he's forced to watch. hell, they could even show the birth of quicksilver and scarlet witch. (i personally don't think they should, though) and of course the meeting, befriending, and falling out with xavier. the formation of the brotherhood. there is a LOT to pull from in a magneto movie. they COULD make it great, but probably wouldn't. so im not too disappointed about this.

i just don't get how people can say magneto doesn't have enough of an interesting past to make a movie of, do you guys just not know magneto's past?
CorndogBurglar - 11/10/2009, 10:16 PM
Why do a First Class or Magneto movie. I would rather they not reboot but just "rebrand" the movie. Why not start anew with say "Uncanny X-men"? Let the X1-3 be its own and make another line, it can use the same actors but its own. I would rather not see a Deadpool or Magneto movie, but the Wolverine Japanese I would like to see. But if they must make another X-Men Origins movie why not a X-Men Origins: Dazzler!!!
Number21 - 11/10/2009, 10:22 PM
... I really don't know how to answer that poll.

I mean the idea of First Class has potential, but only in the right hands.
Right now NONE of this stuff is in the right hands.
I have zero confidence in any Fox related CBM project.

I hated X Men 3. I didn't much like Deplorigins either.

Yup I am just going to sit this one out. I'm not touching this. It's not worth my attention.
If they make any of these films I might go see it, but I doubt it. I will probably just opt to do something more fun like watching wet paint dry or martinizing my my shorts

DarthMulder - 11/10/2009, 10:28 PM
It's not that his past isn't interesting, it truly is, it's just not something I would put ahead of another chance at a good xmen movie or another underdeveloped hero. He has a great story to be sure, but it's the kind of story that I could see fox screwing up majorly. It's a story with deep emotions, a very serious tale, it's like schindler's list with mutants and I can't see fox investing any money in that kind of story. They see super heroes in a very narrow way: big explosions and lots of action. Anything more complex than that and they cringe. All you have to do is look at wolverine and think, " Do I want them to do that to poor Magneto too? Isn't his life hard enough already?". We'll never see comicbook material taken serious enough to allow for Magneto's story to be properly told, and if it can't be done right I'd rather not see it made at all.
thwhtGuardian - 11/10/2009, 10:28 PM
@ whtguardian

i agree, its just most people complain in these threads that magneto doesn't have enough story to draw from, or that it would be boring. those people clearly have no clue. but you're totally right, this wouldn't be done properly.
CorndogBurglar - 11/10/2009, 10:36 PM
Yeah most people do, it's my opinion that they are the reason that it couldn't be made properly. It seems that all people want to see these day are 'splosions, story is just a tertiary(yeah not even secondary) element. People seem to be content with g.i. joe and wolverine and it makes me fear that because of that we may never see more serious stories on the big screen.
thwhtGuardian - 11/10/2009, 10:44 PM
@thwhtGuard: Did you get a chance to read my Spidey editorial? I'd like to hear your thoughts. Some people have said I'm a horrid writer because I don't see eye to eye with them. I'm pretty sure you'll be able to give me an unbiased opinion.
MultiPurposePoni - 11/10/2009, 10:45 PM
A Magneto solo film is so unnecessary. There is absolutely no reason to go back and revisit his past, no reason.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 11/10/2009, 10:45 PM
Except of course for fox to screw up another origin story for a quick buck
supermarioworldE - 11/10/2009, 10:46 PM
@ multi

don't listen to that "brazilianbatman" guy, dude. you put your arguments up there and made good points. no one can hate on you for that, since thats what we all do on here every day, lol.
CorndogBurglar - 11/10/2009, 10:55 PM
I am still disappointed with the wolverine origins movie because it shifted away from the original x-men movies and character origins; however I would prefer a Magneto movie over a x-men first class. They need to make x-men 4 to further develop the x-men franchise.
yankees8924 - 11/10/2009, 11:03 PM
@CDB: You gotta love someone who's only input to the conversation is to make a derogatory personal comment. It reminds me of that guy would could never land a girl so he made it a point to talk sh*t about the rest of the guys for attention LOL

@super: Bingo! You've won the Fox jackpot! Thanks for your $8 contribution
MultiPurposePoni - 11/10/2009, 11:09 PM
@multi

Can you believe that I actually paid that amount to see wolverine? My wallet's felt empty ever since...
supermarioworldE - 11/10/2009, 11:49 PM
here, check this out. this is xmen 4!

RockNRollCC - 11/11/2009, 12:08 AM
They should film Ian McKellen's scenes, in case the old guy croaks. I say wait to do X-Men:First Class.
Timerider84 - 11/11/2009, 2:25 AM
TYLER @ Your comment says it all, plus so does the fact you liked SN'ORIGINS!!! Lmao!!

TORCHED4 @ Thats what X4 would be like when FOX makes it lol, still it looked better than [frick]ing BORIGINS!!!! ; D

Yep back burner talk yet again, give it a couple of weeks lol!

This kind of sucks. I really wish to see more of this character and the wonderful actor that portrayed him. I guess I can wait, but can the world. lol

@LEE777
Clive would make an interesting younger Mags. That is a neat choice.

LEEE777 - 11/11/2009, 5:48 AM
LEEE@ take that back ;( lol
teabag - 11/11/2009, 6:37 AM
Still don't see this movie making a dime in profit, I don't see it breaking even. Magneto doesn't have drawing power like mainstream superheros, and would need a miracle and one hell of an A-list actor to get attention from non diehards. I would see it it it came out, but would the average movie goer even give a shit? I just think it's a waste of time and money, unless Fox needs a write off.
ASSASSIN666 - 11/11/2009, 7:20 AM
A Magneto movie has the same chance of making money as any other movie. How do original screenplay movies make money? There are people (like many comic book fans) who will go and see this film and many more will go if its good. Its very possible to make an interesting and good Magneto film.
Angelo - 11/11/2009, 8:36 AM
Really? Who knows who magneto is outside of the comic crowd? Is he recognizable like Bats, Hulk, Superman, Wolverine, Spiderman? Does he have cross over appeal like Iron Man? I think most people would spend their money on refrigerator magnets before seeing a Magneto movie. So think long and hard about these factors before thinking Magneto would work for anyone but us, the comic fans.
ASSASSIN666 - 11/11/2009, 8:45 AM
Thank God - this was the most pointless idea for a CBM ever! We all know Fox would have probably [frick]ed it up anyway and I'd rather see them work on X-4 before this! Magneto's origins arent even that interesting and could be done in the first 20mins of First Class if they're that desperate to show them!
JoshW - 11/11/2009, 8:56 AM
"TYLER @ Your comment says it all, plus so does the fact you liked SN'ORIGINS!!! Lmao!! "

Dude, you liked both Fantastic Four movies, and the Ghost Rider movie.

You really need some consistency. If you hate Origins, why do you want to see another origin film from the same studio?

What kind of ass-backwards logic is that?
InTylerWeTrust82 - 11/11/2009, 10:26 AM
I understand why alot of you aren't "chewing at the bit" for this film, but as GTRMAN stated above this film has ENORMOUS potential! I know that no one wants a REBOOT of the X-Men franchise, but this film represents a FANTASTIC opportunity to start over from the BEGINNING. If this film ended properly with MAGNETO and XAVIER at odds after setting up the school, that is the perfect lead-in for X-MEN: FIRST CLASS. From there they could go to into THE UNCANNY X-MEN and introduce a few botched characters such as ROGUE and GAMBIT, and so on, and so on....

Then again, I may be thinking of the way MARVEL makes movies, not FOX....
Talontd - 11/11/2009, 10:33 AM
@ josh

magneto's complete origin could encompass two full movies if they wanted it too. theres a LOT more than just being in a concentration camp
CorndogBurglar - 11/11/2009, 11:06 AM
CDB: Yeah, but none of it is onteresting fill half a movie never mind 2! Plus, you just know Fox would throw in a bunch of cameos that shouldnt be there like Gambit in Wolverine!
JoshW - 11/11/2009, 11:09 AM
Hell Magneto's origins might fill three movies but so did Darth Vaders...and who realy cared about Anekin ?? :P

Keep this locked up for ten yrs at least otherwise it will be as succesful as a Lego execution...

:P
teabag - 11/11/2009, 11:29 AM
teabag: LMAO!!! :D
JoshW - 11/11/2009, 1:10 PM
AWSOME!!! I hope this movie NEVER COMES OUT.AS A matter of fact I hope FOX NEVER EVER DOES ANOTHER CBM...EVER! im so excited :P
thatiscrazy - 11/11/2009, 1:21 PM
And for the record… Why has Ryan Reynolds played 3 comic book heros? Hannibal King, Wade Wilson, and Hal Jordan? Ryan Renolds is the man and Perfect for Wade Wilson, but 2 of these characters exist in the same world... COME ON MAN! : /

NEW RULE: you can only play as one super hero

thatiscrazy - 11/11/2009, 1:38 PM
i'm not sure if any of you will agree with me, but if this movie ever comes to be, it will be hard pressed not to come off as a post-holocaust revenge against the world story that sets up nazi germany as a setting in which a jew is turned into a monster by the atrocities of that insane moment in history. i mean, it might not play well as a movie. i get the feeling it would come off as vaguely insensitive to the events of the holocause. not that that story is any such thing in the comic books. however, stretched out along a longer timetable with more mitigating circumstances, it plays a bit less offensive.

in addition, there is a fundamental problem in marketing a villain's origin story that has already appeared as a threat to classically defined movie protagonists in previous films in that canon: the villain would likely be cast in a more sympathetic or even protagonistic light in a movie that would come after they have been seen to be the bane of heroes. i have the same fears, to a lesser degree, about the deadpool movie...that the studio will want to reinvent the villain too much as a hero in their own origin story.
inlovewiththeregencyelf - 11/13/2009, 8:28 AM
incidentally, ryan reynolds is awful. he's just a snotty, one-dimensional frat boy who seems like a petulent child in every role he plays...more so, in fact, in roles in which he might be presented as an actual adult or in a more serious light. he's national lampoon's, not deadpool. he doesn't like deadpool or get the character. he likes being famous...that's pretty much the beginning and end of it. i suppose they don't make comic book movies for comic book fans, that wouldn't be sensible economically, but i just dread the sight of him turning a complicated character whose talk is an exercise in a certain tragicomic and decidedly dark psychosis into a van wilder chatterbox.
inlovewiththeregencyelf - 11/13/2009, 8:32 AM
i am a big fan of the x-men films at least the first 2and would love for marvel to get the rights back and start over.either that or lets see first class with sinister, and the sentinels. also magneto would be great if handled right and he and charles villain could be apocalypse since they are both good guys till after they build the x-men together.x-4 and 5 back to back with bryan singer could be great if the sentinels were in it and cyckops was the leader.also colossus, angel, iceman, gambit, nightcrawler, and beast need more story and screen time so x-4 and x-5 back to back would give them alll a chance to shine.also cameo characters and other new characetsr i would love to see are beak, tito bohusk, angel salvador, glob herman, rockslide, anole, chamber, husk, prosimian, kathleeen, and orb weaver would be awesome emotional characters to see and we need these films to have better story and not alll action.also if they do a new mutants film they should combined new x-men,generation-x,and new mutants characters i mention above.they should be the new mutants combine the best characters for the best movie.and a district-x film would be a really cool start for bishop. then in the sequels have him start his time traveling start to find a wanted mutant. in district-x he was a detective who hunted wanted mutants so i think this would work nicely.bring bryan singer back he was athinking director and left no holes in his films, and had emotional storys with great character build, and just enough action.
1chris2 - 11/16/2009, 3:29 PM
no x-men 4, it needs to be rebooted. also i think jason statham would be better for deadpool
deadpool21 - 11/22/2009, 3:48 PM
no @warmachine, jason statham (or ray park) for TASKMASTER!

ryan reynolds is th perfect deadpool, but i wuld have prefered bradly cooper for hal jordan/green lantern.
