Really gotta wonder how many articles Josh can make out of one LA Times interview with Todd Phillips

Joaquin Phoenix lost 52 pounds for this, sounds like he was pretty committed.

If this does well I'd love it if they green-lit a mid-budget R-rated Question film by, like, Lynne Ramsay

Also, Phillips didn’t call the programming director of the Venice International Film Festival and ask for “Joker” to be in competition — they were simply invited and accepted. And that leaked script going around? If it’s what Phillips thinks it is — a draft from April 2018 — he said, “They’re in for a big surprise when they see the movie.” The script changed quite a bit between that version and when they began shooting last September.

Very interesting...

@tmp3 - That's what I've been saying. People keep going on about the leaked Joker script. But the script kept changing every day. So, it's like "Which script did you read? There's a bunch of them."

Need to rewatch You Were Never Really Here before this. Haven’t seen it since theaters and that movie left me on edge.

I’m not used to hearing such wisdom attributed to studio executives. Seems like if they get burned often enough, they can be taught.

I don’t really think that there’s a big market for this kind of thing beyond very few comic characters though, each with diminishing returns.

Scott Silver, co-writer of Joker, has also written some dope movies:

@regularmovieguy - Scott Silver's written a movie starring skinny Batman and a movie starring skinny Joker

@regularmovieguy - I remember seeing it at a film festival in 2017 for free because of my student pass, lol. It was 4 months before its theatrical release and Lynne Ramsay introduced the film with the kid. Great film, the Joaq was excellent as always, kind of solidified him as being an absolute top-tier actor for me.

@TheDoctor1225 - Maybe Joaquin & Zazie are like Bonnie & Clyde now? Instead of the dynamic in the script?

I’m a ‘91 baby. Saw him first in Gladiator on VHS - hated him in it. Didn’t realize until I rewatched it later how good he was in it.

Loved him in Signs - him and Mel were really fun to watch together and had a believable relationship.

Wasn’t until I saw him in Walk the Line that I thought, “okay, this guy is fantastic.”

@KingCipher

No way! haha I just saw his IMDb and his only other credits were Mod Squad and something else.

Had no idea he had a hand in that although I’m sure there at least 5 other writers.

The Fighter is incredible tho. And I’m sure David O. Russell had a big hand in that (the family banter, no doubt) but it’s one of my favorite movies about boxing/fighting. Might be my favorite Bale performance.

Rachel Dratch, Tina Fey, Will Ferrell, Amy Poehler...

Probably my favorite SNL cast next to Sudeikis, Sandberg, Wiig, and Hader.

Debbie Downer was always hilarious 😂

@regularmovieguy - Sudeikis, Sandberg, Wiig, and Hader was GOD-tier. What a career they all went on to have. Wiig's already at DC... Bill Hader... Riddler? 👀

I'm sure Joker will do well enough, so get ready for more films like this one.
