A couple weeks ago, it was reported that Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson - who's starred in films such as Fast Five and the upcoming G.I. Joe: Retaliation - was in talks to star in Hercules, which will be directed by X-Men: The Last Stand's Brett Ratner. Now, Variety reports that MGM has closed a deal with Johnson to star in the film, which will start production this October in New Zealand. The writer of the film, Ryan Condal, adapted Steve Moore's graphic novel Hercules: The Thracian War, which was released by Radical Publishing in 2008. MGM's Roger Birnbaum, Gary Barber and Jonathan Glickman will produce the movie with Peter Berg and his Film 44 partner Sarah Aubrey, as well as Barry Levine of Radical Pictures, whose Jesse Berger will exec produce.

Below is a plot summary for Hercules: The Thracian War:

Fourteen hundred years ago, a tormented soul walked the earth that was neither man nor god. Hercules was the powerful son of the god king Zeus, for this he received nothing but suffering his entire life. After twelve arduous labors and the loss of his family, this dark, world-weary soul turned his back on the gods finding his only solace in bloody battle. Over the years he warmed to the company of six similar souls, their only bond being their love of fighting and presence of death. These men and woman never question where they go to fight or why or whom, just how much they will be paid. Now the King of Thrace has hired these mercenaries to train his men to become the greatest army of all time. It is time for this bunch of lost souls to finally have their eyes opened to how far they have fallen when they must train an army to become as ruthless and blood thirsty as their reputation has become.

headlopper - 3/5/2012, 2:07 PM
I've acually read the '12 Trails of Hurceles' for what it's worth , and I can tell you that it is classic literature and needs a VERY skilled actor to sell the drama.

I like the Rock , but this roles iss waaayyyy beyond his acting skills.

This movie will be cheesy .

Don't know if I want 'cheese' with my Greek mythology.

This is the second radical publishing comic to get a movie deal. The other being the Tom cruise headlined oblivion.
Trapdinsteel - 3/5/2012, 2:18 PM
This is the role I was hoping Joe Manganiello would get

Ah well, I guess there is always Hawkman for Joe now.
Amazo - 3/5/2012, 2:19 PM
Bret Ratner....no thanks!
JatevinM - 3/5/2012, 2:19 PM
The Rock's visible skin color isn't much different from that of an actual Greek person.
Amazo - 3/5/2012, 2:20 PM
@Trapdinsteel
Much better casting!
Amazo - 3/5/2012, 2:22 PM

@Just1Superguy

Welcome to the club.For years Hollywood has casted white northern european actors to play people of color,southern europeans and middle eastern folks.Part of this may have been due to lack of access to the correct population,such as casting filipinos as Japanese or Vietnamese soldiers in war films shot in the Philippines. How about west africans as Somalis in BlackHawk Down or Elizabeth Taylor as as Cleopatra or Americans or Brits of northern european decent as Greeks and Romans (Troy,300,Gladiator) Sorry about that,don't let me interrupt your PC thing.Carry on.
RidiculousFanBoyDemands - 3/5/2012, 2:47 PM
@blkyank

I think the worst was:

Yes that is John Wayne playing Ghengis Kahn.
thatiscrazy - 3/5/2012, 2:54 PM
It’s funny to see how every time an actor of a particular “Race” is cast to play a character of a ”different Race” brings all the worlds top Genealogists to this site lol!
Akercocke - 3/5/2012, 2:57 PM
Nice. Ratner and the rock. Straight to the garbage bin.
HelaGood - 3/5/2012, 2:59 PM

MiracleMe - 3/5/2012, 3:52 PM
Johnson could really "rock" the role of Hercules. Seriously wish there was another director though.
GUNSMITH - 3/5/2012, 4:07 PM
ROCK MOVIE..
SUPERMAN2013 - 3/5/2012, 4:08 PM
Go back to wrestling
SuspenseSmith - 3/5/2012, 4:25 PM
Why wasn't he the new conan. probably would have sucked less.

He's always good in his movies, even if the rest of the movie sucks.
nowtheresaBATman - 3/5/2012, 5:12 PM
@SuspenseSmith your right he might as well of been Conan
mgeoff88 - 3/5/2012, 5:22 PM
I think Joe Manganiello would've been a much better choice.

The Rock isn't a bad choice though. I'm just not too crazy about Brett Ratner directing the movie.
virgilswann - 3/5/2012, 9:49 PM
He would have made a great CONAN. Terrible choice for Hercules. This guy does not look Greek. At all.
marvelmythology - 3/6/2012, 12:36 AM
Get off Joe Manganiello's dick. Why is everyone gloating about this guy... Like it's kinda weird all the pictures of him I've seen posted on here. And don't forget his "Mediterranean looks" someone's got way too much time on their hands to be examining this guys features. You ain't happy with rocky make a damn Heracles movie yourself. Plus Heracles is supposed to be darker toned not the Roman depiction
Fabius - 3/6/2012, 3:09 AM
Not happy, really prefer : Chris Hemsworth/or Hugh Jackman/ or Russel Crowe. So sade for this great Hercules. But they decide to choose Dwayne Momoa johnson...Poor choice.
ThaMessenger07 - 3/6/2012, 6:44 AM
W.E I'll watch it and probably enjoy it. Didn't really like the Comic much but it could be a great film!

^ & Fabius, no one you named looks Greek or like Hercules. Jackman is just okay.....

Haters Gonna Hate...
Trapdinsteel - 3/6/2012, 7:51 AM
@marvelmythology

No one in here said anything about Joe Manganiello's dick...that was you. I posted a shirtless picture of him as well as a shirtless picture of the comic character of Hercules (because he is always shirtless) to show that Joe could have been a good fit for the physicality of the role.

I am indifferent about the Rock in this role because he has already done something similar with the whole mythological warrior in the Scorpian King so my preference would have been someone different. Either way it is not a big deal to me and I will probably end up renting this one anyway.

Judging by your reaction perhaps you "should get off the Rock's dick".
marvelmythology - 3/6/2012, 8:51 AM
I wasn't talking all high and mighty about the rock or posting pictures of him if I did I'd take your advice but wow good for you and your research to know he's always shirtless that's common knowledge. But your the one getting defensive about it so you obviously favor Joe for sum reason I could name alot of actors that could fit the role but in not making this thing. So try and find another way to insult me guy. Because in not posting pictures of guys I got other things to do than to once again look at the features of another man. And I don't have time for one of your blog arguments I have a girlfriend. That's way better than trying to argue on cbm g
marvelmythology - 3/6/2012, 8:52 AM
Or to examine Joe Manganiello's physical features
ThaMessenger07 - 3/6/2012, 9:24 AM
^^^ lol homophobes sound like the biggest homos lol....
Trapdinsteel - 3/6/2012, 9:28 AM
@marvelmythology

The only reason that I "favored" Joe M. is because me and my girlfriend have been catching up on the series Tru Blood over the past 2 weeks so the thought was fresh in my mind. I am not getting defensive nor did I try to insult you. I simply replied to you with the same manner and level of respect that YOU insulted the commentors in this thread with YOUR response. Since it seems like you forgot you were the first one to insult people, this is how you started out your response:

"Get off Joe Manganiello's dick".

Perhaps if you do not have time to get into "blog arguments" you should try to be less of an asshole when you do choose to comment.
