Shia La Beouf Passes on Y: The Last Man

La Beouf calls Brian K. Vaughan's comic masterpiece his "favorite comic book," but thinks the role is too similar to other roles he has played recently.

Despite telling Wizard magazine, "Y: The Last Man is my favorite comic book," Shia La Beouf seems to no longer be interested in playing the part of the main character, Yorick Brown, in a big screen adaptation of the popular graphic series.

Produced by David S. Goyer, with screenwriter Carl Ellsworth and director D. J. Caruso, the team behind Disturbia, Y: The Last Man was originally scheduled to go into production in the fall of 2008. Now, however, it is doubtful if the film will ever be made, especially without the star power of La Beouf.

La Beouf told Wizard that the role is too similar to his Transformers character, Sam Witwicky:

"You take Sam and you put a monkey on his shoulder. I don't know if it's that big a differential. It seems like he's the ordinary guy in an extraordinary situation again."

The "monkey" La Beouf refers to is Ampersand, Yorick Brown's pet Capuchin monkey. In Y: The Last Man, Yorick and Ampersand are the only two mammals possessing a Y chromosome to survive a mysterious plague that sweeps the planet.

La Beouf went on to say:

"I'm not willing to make that movie currently and may be too old to play the role by the time it does come around."

La Beouf's next film, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, opens nationwide June 24th!

Well, the guy can't play everything...
ThoroughbredSteele0 - 6/9/2009, 8:13 AM
surely they wouldn't just scrap this project cause shia passed on it. that seems a little extreme, its not like hes that great an actor anyway. not horrible, but def not deal breaker good.
Shaman - 6/9/2009, 8:17 AM
Yeah. He wants to grab the Robin gig more i guess...
ThoroughbredSteele0 - 6/9/2009, 8:21 AM
robin gig? for the love of all that is holy please tell me their not thinkin about puttin robin in the next batman movie?
is robin one of the women in 'Y'? aint got the chance to read em yet, although I've heard good things.
answer - 6/9/2009, 8:29 AM
I doubt they would have Robin in the next bats film. Didn't Bale and Nolan both say they're defo not having the boy wonder in it?
Stumblin - 6/9/2009, 8:36 AM
Bale did say he wouldn't do Batman if Boy Wonder made an appearance. It'll never happen as long as Christopher Nolan is directing.

I never read this book either, and Shia is over rated.
Shaman - 6/9/2009, 8:41 AM
If Chris Pine doesn't get GL, he'll probably land Y.

LOL No Robin isn't slated for the next Bat-film LOL :P But if he was, Laboeuf isn't a bad pic.
Spilox - 6/9/2009, 8:43 AM
Ah crap!
BmanHall - 6/9/2009, 9:02 AM
Bale loves himself way too much to allow somebody a chance to steal his spotlight.
NubaX - 6/9/2009, 9:13 AM
I would LOVE to see a DARK, HARDCORE, YOUNG Robin in Batman!

Not Shai...someone who's younger and more Athletic!

for Robin to be realistic taken seriously, he has to be an Athletic, Circus Freak, Soilder to keep up with Batman.

They should look into a young Martial Artist to at be Robin.
ironknight27 - 6/9/2009, 9:28 AM
Like others have mentioned Robin will not be a part of this Batman movie series. Nolan and Bale have both expressed that they do not want boy in the films. I would rather see a Dick as Nightwing in a movie then see him as Robin. And as for Shia not being a part of Y the Last Man thats disappointing but they can get someone better to take on the role. This movie, if done right, will be great on the big screen with or without him.
GUNSMITH - 6/9/2009, 9:32 AM
PUTTING ROBIN IN THE NEW BATMAN FRANCHISE IS SUICIDE..REMEMBER WHAT HAPPENED LAST TIME.NO MAN......NO.
UatU - 6/9/2009, 9:42 AM
Why would you even WANT to see Robin in the next movie? I can't even begin to imagine how he would fit into the Nolanverse. 10-12 year old Dick Grayson, maybe. I think there's potential for some interesting storytelling elements involving Bruce feeling emapthy for this little boy who's going through the same thing that he did at that age, but he's become so wrapped up in "Batman", (and in the case of the Nolanverse, the death of Rachel Dawes), that he can barely connect with other people. This was somewhat breifly explored in the graphic novel Dark Victory.

Maybe, (assuming this is the last Batman movie), at the end after the credits the kid stumbles into the cave or is shown by Bruce and the Robin fans get the sense that the story is going to continue in that direction, even though it's the last movie and therefore we wouldn't actually see Robin later.

So in summation, young Dick Grayson, possibly could work. Robin, no [frick]ing way.
selinakyle - 6/9/2009, 9:50 AM
Gosh pls...no Robin.... i will definitely boycott if they put Robin in the movie. I think we have had enough of him.
UatU - 6/9/2009, 9:53 AM
Chris Pine as Y: the last man guy.

To be honest I barely read any of that comic so I don't actually know if he'll fit the character at all. I do know he's a lot better an actor than Shia who I think is kind of overrated.
Shaman - 6/9/2009, 9:53 AM
Robin should be a chick!
THEHAWK - 6/9/2009, 9:58 AM
I say make him about 16-17 have his family killed by Zucco, and Bruce takes pity on him and has him become his ward. Dick thinks Bruce did it for just public sympathy, zo he gives Bruce a hard time. He goes after Zucco alone, gets the hell beat out of him, and is saved by Batman. Dick wakes up in the cave and Batman reveals his identity to Dick.
Shaman - 6/9/2009, 10:01 AM
And then they get it on! "Dick" would be her pet name Bruce would use for they're intimate time together :P
Hellmont - 6/9/2009, 10:09 AM
Jesus Christ listen to yourselves Robin was a tool to just reel in a younger demographic of readers. I hate even the sight of the boy blunder with his red coat and green speedos yuck. Batman and Robin The Ambiguosly Gay Duo.

The only way I will accept another film with Robin in it is if it based on the the A Death in the Family but instead of Jason Todd getting killed make it Dick Grayson.

And as far as Shia not taking the last man role.....Thank God hes smart enough to back out of a real acting job and save himself the humiliation and save us ten bucks on his sorry ass....... the role would only be Sam with a monkey ......not very accurate, the role would be Shia being....Once again Shia in another big budget film. I am sorry but Shia as an actor is as ineffective as Hayden Christiansen or Ashton Kutcher.
adamant877 - 6/9/2009, 10:22 AM
I'm getting so sick of seeing this guys face. It makes me sad. He singlehandedly turned the Indiana Jones franchise into the second coming of Jar-Jar. Idiots.

Y: The Last Man is an incredible read, and since the character is pretty much your standard "everyman" character, it would seem a pretty simple task to cast the part. ANYONE BUT SHIA LE DOUCHE!!!

I would like to see a young Dick Grayson in Nolan's universe, but totally agree with Uatu: No Robin!
Shaman - 6/9/2009, 10:25 AM
The Conan sword does raise a good point.
SpiderBat209 - 6/9/2009, 10:48 AM
Hmmm. Shia is played-out already. Yelchin for Y: The Last Man. :)
RorMachine - 6/9/2009, 10:50 AM
In fairness adamant, it wasnt Shias fault that Crystal Skull bombed, he was actually pretty good as Mutt. Its because Lucas had him swinging through the jungle like [frick]ing Tarzan that was the problem. I think hes a good actor. Hes always believable. He might not have the best range, but i wouldnt put him in the same category as Christiansen or Kutcher. Its just become trendy to rag on him because hes getting such high profile work. That being said im glad hes not doing Y. Isnt Yorick sposed to be in his mid to late 20s? Cast someone that looks it then! Not Shia and not Yelchin.
georgia49th - 6/9/2009, 10:59 AM
well for one Robin wasn't a boy more like the teenage wonder Batman and Robin sucked as a movie .
It only goes to show That Nolan and Bale cannot pull it off Robin should be at least 9 or 10 years old. Bale surley had bats in mind when he did Baternator Salvation oops I mean Terminator Salvation...
adamant877 - 6/9/2009, 11:01 AM
Ror: I guess you're mostly right. It WAS the damned swinging vines thing that made me ill, and the constant slicking and combing of his jew-fro... I will also agree that he is highly overrated!

I say James Franco would be an excellent pick for Yorick. What do you guys think?
Shaman - 6/9/2009, 11:02 AM
I thought it bombed because it had to do with aliens... but i never saw it so i can't say for sure.

Franco's a go!!!
LEEE777 - 6/9/2009, 11:02 AM
Man, i really hoped SAM (SHIA) wasn't in TRANSFORMERS 2! I dunno, theres something about him you don't like! Plus i don't see the fuss about him wtf??? Theres tons of better actors, an INDYS kid, my god lol! : D

BS! He'd do Y if it was offered to him on a plate with lotsa $$$! ; )
Shaman - 6/9/2009, 11:04 AM
LEEE- Think he'd blow me if i offered it to him on a plate with lotsa $$$???
BaronBubba - 6/9/2009, 11:12 AM
EVEN STEVENS!
LEEE777 - 6/9/2009, 11:21 AM
SHAMAN @ lol ; )

Nah i ain't got nothing against him, an am happy he's getting his dream roles, i just don't see it myself lol!
Shaman - 6/9/2009, 11:39 AM
Yeah, he's livin the dream.
loganoneil - 6/9/2009, 11:49 AM
Ror - in defense (SMALL, TINY, TEENY) of Kutcher, watch 'The Butterfly Effect' - a very good film (especially the director's cut) where he was (gulp) DECENT (I know, I know... hell just froze over!). It's too bad he hasn't done ANYTHING even remotely close to it since!

As for 'The Beef', to me he just seem to be one of those 'actors' that plays the same 'character' over and over again (mainly an extention of themselves - in this case a neurotic, twitchy spaz). Can that REALLY be considered 'acting'?

Adaman - I agree with Shaman, Franco can do no wrong in my book. He truly is an actor (Spiderman 3 aside LOL)!
mounted88 - 6/9/2009, 11:55 AM
I think the lead dude form never back down (jake tyler in the movie) would be a good choice for robin.
ThoroughbredSteele0 - 6/9/2009, 12:31 PM
damn, I didnt mean to turn this into 'who would be the best robin' debate

excellent point loganoniel bout 'the beef'(thats pretty good btw, hadn't heard that one yet) he does seem to play the same character in every movie, no range at all.

and the butterfly effect was surprisingly not bad, until the end when it went all emo and did the donnie darko ending
Shaman - 6/9/2009, 12:34 PM
LoganOneil- Yeah, kutcher was decent in butterfly effect. Then Demi Moore went to his head... or is it that she gave him head... either way, he plummeted. Actually, Franco was probably the only decent thing in SM3 LOL :P Other than the fun entertaining ride of course :P

mounted88- Acutally, Jake Tyler does seem like a Chris O'Donnel clone... but he's a bit less "Dartagnany", i'll give you that.
shibazz - 6/9/2009, 12:57 PM
Thank god, i am way sick of him, i wish he would take his money and leave.

Oh and if he is ever used as any form of Robin i will kill him personally ;')
Shaman - 6/9/2009, 1:10 PM
shibazz- I wanna see you as Robin!!!
thwhtGuardian - 6/9/2009, 1:35 PM
No robin... ever
RorMachine - 6/9/2009, 2:00 PM
Frank miller writes a good Robin. Both the chick in TDKR and recently in Allstar. Thats the only Robin iv ever really enjoyed reading so if they base a movie on his take on it, it MIGHT work.
JeremyBentham - 6/9/2009, 2:03 PM
shia is perfect to play yorick brown, but i dont think shia wants that type of role anymore. i think he's trying to move past the callow youth and sidekick type so he can pursue more mature roles. but i cant seriously imagine him doing anything other than what he is most famous for (transformers, indiana jones...)
JeremyBentham - 6/9/2009, 2:05 PM
and...no robin. somehow, they were able to make a guy running around in a batsuit actually believable. having a youth run alongside him fighting crime is too much to swallow
Betty - 6/9/2009, 2:06 PM
I've never been too big on Robin. He's barley cooler than Bucky. At least Bucky's going to die in the first Cappy flick. At least, that's what I predict.

As far as casting Robin, I can't get enough of this Yelchin kid. I think he'd make a great Robin.
Shaman - 6/9/2009, 2:08 PM
Key word "swallow".

Betty- Bucky will apear dead but will come back as the main villain at the end. Winter Soldier :)
Betty - 6/9/2009, 2:21 PM
Tee! For real?
Set2Fallfirst - 6/9/2009, 2:33 PM
ILL DO IT FRICK! HAHA IF ONLY i would love to i love that comic but im not "established" enough to do it. Unless. hmmm Unless they pick an unknown but five bucks says everyone would get a stick up there butt cuz im black and the dudes name is Yorick. O well, @shaman dude your frickin halarious I read your post about the purple marker nice : ]
Shaman - 6/9/2009, 2:42 PM
Betty- I really don't think they'll go with the Red Skull for some reason. So this would be the obvious alternative :P

Set2FallFirst- Yeah, i had a Chaz Michael Michaels avatar at the time and it provided the inspiration and motivation requiered. Thanks for watching and stay classy :)

Dude, that wallpaper you have for an avatar is pretty sweet but we can hardly see it. I'll try to resize you an avatar from it :)
Shaman - 6/9/2009, 2:50 PM
Here you go :)

THEHAWK - 6/9/2009, 2:56 PM
I could honestly see him doing some more dramatic stuff, maybe a new version of Hamlet?
Bandrews1 - 6/9/2009, 2:58 PM
What a shame, he was the only person I could see playing the part.
Kyos - 6/9/2009, 3:15 PM
I'm glad he's not going to be Yorick. Because I don't like him. At all. Not even because I think he is a bad actor (though he might be) - I just don't like him. And I love "Y: The Last Man". Whatever...
