TDKR: Does Toy Merchandise Reveal That John Blake Is Actually Azrael?

Is The Dark Knight Rises' John Blake actually Azrael? This "Heroclix" bio may yield some interesting revelations for a character many assumed to be Dick Grayson.

Take this as complete rumor but this morning I got a very interesting email submission from a guy named Cory91. He claims that his friend works for "Wizkids" the makers of "HeroClix" and that while they are currently working on "Batman Begins", "Dark Knight" and "Dark Knight Rises" set of the figures, they are given in depth descriptions of each character and that there was one character with info we have not yet heard. DC provided them with a very interesting bio for the John Blake figure that had to be hidden from the public at the recent press unavailing and conventions:
"A hard-nosed young Gotham beat cop who is assigned to a special task unit to take down the vigilante known as "The Batman" becomes an unlikely ally to the Dark Knight. When the mercenary known as "Bane" breaks the prisoners out of Blackgate Prison, the city becomes overrun and Blake takes the codename of "Azrael" to help Batman stop Bane."

Now Cory91 did not provide ANY proof just the above, so again take this with a grain of salt. The only reason I thought it was interesting or plausible is it loosely aligns with the leaked pictures and videos we've seen of Blake and Bruce Wayne talking together and driving somewhere in a car.

Wev'e also seen the leaked video of Blake and some gasoline, helping Batman by maybe blowing up one of Bane's tumblers. So while Blake may not dawn a costume or turn out to be Robin, maybe a nice code name of "Azrael" would fit?

I personally do not believe this, but thought it was an interesting enough rumor to share.

Hmmmm... very interesting...
antonio - 4/13/2012, 12:41 PM
Interesting to say the least. He MIGHT...be based off the Michael Lane Azrael if he is in fact Azrael. In the end, I think he is just going to be a cop, much like Jim Gordon.
FrankieDedo - 4/13/2012, 12:42 PM
Yeah, really. Look, JGL is exactly like azrael in that pic wow. sure nolan will use a costume like that in the movie but we hasn't seen it yet.
Yeah, sure.....costumes? nolan?

naaaahhh
6of13 - 4/13/2012, 12:45 PM
Indeed, very interesting.
jvskgd - 4/13/2012, 12:47 PM
idk about this it sounds like it could be true but we have herd so many rumors about who he is so i gusse we will have to wait for the movie to come out
Hellsing - 4/13/2012, 12:49 PM
well I hope not I was rather hoping he would just be the "gordon" of the movie or his protégée because we know gordons going to be out of commission for awhile in the movie but what ever I guess. GORDON FTW
antonio - 4/13/2012, 12:54 PM
@Hellsing that is what I see happening. But since this a Christopher Nolan film, nay, Christopher Nolan's LAST Batman film, he may have a trick up his sleeve.
luckylu - 4/13/2012, 12:54 PM
if this is true, dont expect a costume or any resemblance but him merely taking on a codename.
dellamorte1872 - 4/13/2012, 1:29 PM
i thought about this honestly.....if they refer to him being "religious"? then yes nolan will use AZAREL + he in a combo way. like DUCARD+RAS. but i doubt it cause M.C will be the "twist" as TALIA
dellamorte1872 - 4/13/2012, 1:31 PM
Gordon will get his back broke by BANE and JGL will be BATS new cop liason. thats all i bet
Gnyah123 - 4/13/2012, 3:31 PM
highly doubut any of this is true
no1 even knows if this is true!!
Gnyah123 - 4/13/2012, 3:32 PM
exactly wat dude above me said...gordon will sumhow get in the hospital like in the teaser and JGL will be bats new cop buddy kinda doin w/e it takes to help him
CPBuff22 - 4/13/2012, 3:36 PM
I honestly think its hoping for a bit much.
EditNinja - 4/13/2012, 3:48 PM
I like the idea.
Jean Paul Valley does NOT!
Chris5241 - 4/13/2012, 3:56 PM
OMG OMG OMG OMG! :D
GingerBird - 4/13/2012, 3:57 PM
Having the codename "Azrael" is 100000000000 times better than him actually turning into the dude by having his own costume and fighting crime. Glad it's just a nickname to please some fans.
OnLeatherWings - 4/13/2012, 4:06 PM
Pretty cool rumor. Be sweet if it's true. I mean we have hardly heard anything about his character so who knows.....Nolan does and we will to in a few months
acidbath - 4/13/2012, 4:06 PM
Lol you called what? Someone would post a silly rumor about azrael being played by jgl? Good job you must be psychic....I am too I see this movie has nothing to do with azbats and that none of you will be able to admit this being the worst in nolans trilogy. Maybe I should've put a spoiler alery
SuspenseSmith - 4/13/2012, 4:16 PM
Million times cooler than Dick Robin
SuspenseSmith - 4/13/2012, 4:18 PM
You don't just put in JGL in a film like this and not have him do anything.
SmellofDuty - 4/13/2012, 4:19 PM
Nolan can please the fans! Nobody outside Bat-fans has any idea who Azrael is, so a good hint at it to please us is great! But there is 110% no way that he will wear the costume, but still cool anyways! I could see this being both true and false. But I love grains of salt!
chucksome12391 - 4/13/2012, 4:29 PM
If this is true I hope he wears some form of an outfit to fight crime in.
Havok2 - 4/13/2012, 4:33 PM
I call easter egg, just like 'Donald Blake' in Thor
thewonderer - 4/13/2012, 4:41 PM
@acidbath

Why the hell do people say this films gonna be bad. Good movies will never stop being made. TDKR haters act like theres a certain threshold of creativity that cannot be passed. Well you haters are dead wrong
mgeoff88 - 4/13/2012, 5:25 PM
That interesting, but I was really hoping JGL would be Nolan's version of Nightwing.

Nightwing > Azrael

When you pronounce John, it does sound very similar to Jean.

You know, it does seem very likely that John Blake is actually Jean Paul Valley, and not Dick Grayson. Well, if this turns out to be true, that would be very disappointing IMO.
SuspenseSmith - 4/13/2012, 5:36 PM
When they reboot Batman... they need to do it Arkham Asylum Style.

Owlman88 - 4/13/2012, 5:46 PM
MMM, it sounds like Blake Lively codenaming herself Sapphire in the Green Lantern flick last year...
continuezero - 4/13/2012, 5:49 PM
I read that Azrael throws on the suit and takes Batmans place for a bit. Anyone know if that's true? Cuz that would be an interesting take in this movie if Wayne's out with a broken back for a while.
SolidSnake007 - 4/13/2012, 6:07 PM
Interesting. Especially if Batman is out with a broken back, maybe Bruce could let him take over as Bats for a while. I mean it is a Bane story. Cool idea, but we'll just have to see.
SpiderFan35 - 4/13/2012, 6:21 PM
@Just1Superguy:

It's a rumor, the point is to discuss it.

2gold - 4/13/2012, 6:55 PM
Sounds like a possible nice Easter Egg for the fans, that makes them go oohhhh seee later he becomes and then just Fin. I see nothing wrong with it, heck if someone just continues the story it could give them a new character to work with in the future.
revloveR - 4/13/2012, 7:04 PM
bullsh!t. i remember thinking he was

John=Jean
(b)lake=valley

but no.
CaptainDC - 4/13/2012, 7:06 PM
This is very possible
REDSTORM - 4/13/2012, 7:19 PM
Wasn't there a photo of a stunt double wearing a batsuit that didn't fit him?
Gnyah123 - 4/13/2012, 7:44 PM
When they reboot Batman... they need to do it Arkham Asylum Style
AnarkyInTheUSA - 4/13/2012, 7:48 PM
Gimme a B!
Gimme a U!
Gimme a L!
Gimme a L!
Gimme a S!
Gimme a H!
Gimme a I!
Gimme a T!

What's that spell?
tron21full - 4/13/2012, 7:56 PM
I hope its true. If there are two superheroes in my mind from dc that should be having or appearing in a movie by now it would be Dollman and Azrael. Oh it is.
GreyChaos13Zero - 4/13/2012, 8:30 PM
interesting indeed?)

AlternateNo4 - 4/13/2012, 9:32 PM
so called this. c'mon, he's way too old to be grayson anyway.
DrStrangeFan - 4/14/2012, 3:36 AM
Agreed...Why would you star such a big actor is a small part unless he does have a big part
DrStrangeFan - 4/14/2012, 4:25 AM
This Movie is based of Knightfall
siggisuperman - 4/14/2012, 5:20 AM
This could be very true. Consider that after Bane breaks Batmans back in the comics, Azrael takes over the mantle of batman for some time. I used to read those issues as a baby
Unionjack - 4/14/2012, 6:14 AM
I don't see it, but there is no reason why Bruce could not give the old batsuit to someone who is working with him. Thats what i always wanted, JGL to don the old batsuit and be a sort of nightwing!!
golden123 - 4/14/2012, 6:35 AM
I don't thitnk this is true, but if it is, it will be the best kept secret for the CBM's of 2012. This revealment would beat the name of the aliens in the Avengers beacause lets face it the aliens are either really obscure aliens from the comics, or their look was changed drastically.
xXkryptoniteXx - 4/14/2012, 8:00 AM
When posting please don't put spoilers on the headline just so you can be on top. This ruins some people's experience once we check out the movie. Why ruined it for everyone????
ComicBookGoth - 4/14/2012, 9:26 AM
Doubtful

But it would be cool to see a Jean-Paul Valley situation in future bat-films.
Spidey31 - 4/14/2012, 9:50 AM
Cool, he was in Arkham city
Rockstar96 - 4/14/2012, 10:58 AM
I wonder where Bruce and John are going in the pic above?
zachshivey - 4/14/2012, 11:55 AM
Maybe that's what he was seen painting in the walls in that alley
AlternateNo4 - 4/14/2012, 3:10 PM
AHA! see see i AM smart, even if i DID pretend green lantern was good for way too long. this was from ummm... september. (of course, it'll turn out to be wrong anyway, but i can gloat for the time being):

here's a thought. if gordon now can't communicate with batman because he's a fugitive, he needs a liaison. levitt could be batman's connection from GPD and absolutely could use the codename robin (informant>birdie>pigeon>robin).

if you wanna take it a step further (and why not?) you could think, "hey, john blake is a stupid fake name anyway..." and realize that he is in reality a highly-trained and violence-prone LOS agent named jean-paul valley who goes by the LOS name azrael.

upon observing batman closely valley gains respect for the dark knight and switches sides. he's batman's new remote agent now that fox is dead, and his radio name is robin. sometimes he's on the ground with him too, but for tactical purposes like when bruce needs a wire somewhere and he can't do it in costume.

but after bruce is crippled by his former ally bane, valley/robin/azrael dons the batsuit, makes a few wicked additions and steps out into the night as batman.

bruce heals, tells azrael he still needs his help but he has to be less violent. so he drops the knives, makes a new costume and starts using the name robin. or maybe even nightwing...

they don't live together, he's not a cheesy acrobat, and he's wearing ninja gear not a leotard so he doesn't look like a @#$ing idiot. if he's hard as nails and makes even fewer jokes than batman, people will dig it. even fanboys, unless they start fussing about source material crap. but nolan has changed so much already i can't imagine anyone caring any more.
