One of the better issues to come out today was Geoff Johns and David Finch's Justice League of America #1. There's been a lot of buildup to this secondary Justice League title and it doesn't disappoint. Right away, we hit the ground running with an appearance from Professor Ivo and a chase between a mysterious figure and what looks to be the shadowy silhouettes of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. But for the majority of the issue, the spotlight shines on Steve Trevor and Amanda Waller as they dissect the strengths and weaknesses of the members they've targeted for Justice League of America. Johns crafts a JLA members that steal the show are Martian Manhunter and Catwoman. It's refreshing that there's no mystery about why the team is being formed. Waller and Trevor are about to embark on a recruitment drive to take out the Justice League for the scenario of them potentially going rogue. The individual members of the JLA were selected as specific combatants for the members of the Justice League. It breaks down to Martian Manhunter vs Superman, Catwoman vs Batman, Katana vs Wonder Woman, Hal Jordan vs Baz, Flash vs Vibe, Cyborg vs Stargirl and Aquaman vs Hawkman. Those are all match-up hardcore and newcomers alike would love to see.

What's to be appreciated about the issue is that it doesn't make any pretenses about who and what the characters are and what the U.S. government is dealing with in terms of a foreign operation like the Justice League. For instance, Green Arrow was originally selected as the opposite number for Batman but Trevor stepped in and quickly overrode that notion, acknowledging that a counter move for Batman is the most important position on their team. Fans of Justice League International will also be pleased that the team isn't gone and forgotten and that the disappearance of Booster Gold figures prominently into the formation of the new team. Overall, if you've been reading a wide variety of titles in the New 52, you'll be rewarded in JLA with the many references to the larger DC world.

The art was high-quality, matching the storytelling from Johns and the panel layout facilitated a lot of story being told in only one issue. My lone gripe would be that Finch seemed to really struggle drawing Amanda Waller who was pretty inconsistent from panel to panel.

There's also a ton of easter egg mentions in this issue with mentions of the Secret Society, Chronus, silver age DC villain Byth Rok, Starman, The Star-Spangled Kid and S.T.R.I.P.E.

Johns and Finch make for a dynamic team and have crafted a debut issue full of intrigue, mystery and promise. This is a can't miss read for any DC Comics fan.

Why is Wonder Woman off the pull list?
Fastestmanalive - 2/20/2013, 5:28 PM
Loved this issue, was really good, yea nothing really happened but it was a setup issue, four out of five for me.

The only issue that was better this week was Justice League, which was amazing.
TonyChu - 2/20/2013, 5:30 PM
I can get behind Superman v MM and Aquaman v Hawkman but the rest seems like mix matches.
Fastestmanalive - 2/20/2013, 5:32 PM
@Mark Julian
BTW I see Demon knights is in ur danger zone, I could understand that from previous issues but the new writer Robert Vendetti is doing a fantastic job, I highly recommend u check it out.

Superman vs Martian Manhunter = MM
Batman vs Catwoman = Bats
Wonder Woman vs Katana = WW
Hal Jordan vs Baz = Hal Jordan
Flash vs Vibe = Flash
Cyborg vs Stargirl =Cyborg
Aquaman vs Hawkman = Aquaman
caveman - 2/20/2013, 5:51 PM
Aquaman VS. Hawkman = JIZZ.
PsyGuy - 2/20/2013, 5:59 PM
All of the JLvsJLA pairs are kinda sad for the JLA.
I'm sorry but no.
Blackvoid - 2/20/2013, 6:10 PM
@Ryan If you enjoyed JLA you would prolly enjoy the entire justice league series, also written by Geoff Johns, also it has some amazing shazam back up stories in it.

Would also recommend both batman stories: court of the owls, and death of the family

scott snyder is fantastic
MarkJulian - 2/20/2013, 6:11 PM
Martian Manhunter takes out the entire Justice League by himself.
Ryan022483 - 2/20/2013, 6:18 PM
@Blackvoid i was looking into the Batman stories but i dont think i can find them at my Store anymore
Blackvoid - 2/20/2013, 6:20 PM
@Ryan

Ya it would be impossible to get them without paying big money now, I would suggest getting the Trade Paperbacks tho, awesome reads. Or you can get them digitally too.
MarkJulian - 2/20/2013, 6:22 PM
Some of the match-ups are a little weird.

Superman vs MM is an epic throw down.

Catwoman vs Batman is interesting on a psychological level.

Katana vs Wonder Woman is weird. Don't see Katana lasting very long.

Baz vs Hal is not very interesting at this point. Two lanterns fighting has been done already in the GL titles.

Vibe vs Flash is interesting as it was hinted that Vibe's powers could cut off Flash from the Speedforce.

Cyborg vs Stargirl is an unknown. We haven't really seen what either of these heroes are fully capable of.

Aquaman vs Hawkman = Shut up and take my money!
Ryan022483 - 2/20/2013, 6:22 PM
yeah i was looking on ebay they want the whole lot for over 100 bucks... what are Trade paperbacks?
Bandido - 2/20/2013, 6:39 PM
Vibe is surprinsgly getting good reviews?!??

WHAT!!!

@Ryan022483: tbh since DC is notoriously slow with their trade paperbacks and hardcovers I would suggest going digital

Recommended DC titles:
Batman (of course)
Green Arrow ( great jumping on point with Jeff Lemire)
Green Lanterm (you might want to wait for the new creative team)
Wonder Woman
Batman and robin
I have also heard good things about Animal man, Justice league Dark, demon knights
kingmonkeyman - 2/20/2013, 6:53 PM
I can't wait to see Booster Gold's involvement in this. He needs his own title again.
CavEl - 2/20/2013, 7:13 PM
Trinity War = JLA, JL vs. The guys that were hunting Oliver. Also, kind of rude of Geoff Johns to insult Oliver like that.

Catwoman does not rank ahead of Oliver in anything.
TheCaptain - 2/20/2013, 7:15 PM
This sounds really good. Will definitely pick this up. Me and my brother have been collecting Batman and Justice League. Want to pick up some more series but haven't gotten around (will wait for TPB) any suggestions? Was thinking about reading Aquaman, Teen Titans, etc.
CavEl - 2/20/2013, 7:15 PM
@ Hush - Bitch, please. Superman gots this.
CavEl - 2/20/2013, 7:17 PM
@ Asgardiangangster - Wonder Woman, Aquman, Animal Man and Swamp Thing. Get GJ's GL and maybe Flash.
CavEl - 2/20/2013, 7:21 PM
Superman vs. J'onn should be epic, Vibe vs. Flash and Hawkman vs. Aquaman should also be epic.

Batman vs. Catwoman is lame as [frick] and forced. Star Girl vs. Cyborg is meh.

Wonder Woman vs. Katana? Death! Katana is dead.
CavEl - 2/20/2013, 7:22 PM
They should've gotten Billy for Diana.
Blackvoid - 2/20/2013, 7:28 PM
@Jake I agree with Billy, But he's joining the Justice league, makes them even more dangerous
lucio7lopez - 2/20/2013, 8:12 PM
Superman vs Martian Manhunter = Superman.
Blackvoid - 2/20/2013, 8:31 PM
Ya the way I look at it there is nobody in the dc universe that can take out superman, excluding cosmic beings such as (anti monitor)
Franshu - 2/20/2013, 8:50 PM
Uh.. wasnt Hal Jordan dead?
thatcoldblackcloud - 2/20/2013, 10:13 PM
This issue was great, and surprisingly enough so was Vibe. Deffinitely recommended
Phlegmbot - 2/21/2013, 12:56 AM
Is the New 52 version of MM more powerful than his old counterpart?

Because, w/the exception of Hawkman vs. Aquaman, NONE of those match-ups seem like they'd be too tough for the original JL.

And most of them are downright boring.
evyllsummer - 2/21/2013, 5:57 AM
Wonder Woman vs Katana? Uh, I guess I've missed a few years on Katana, I didn't think she was superhuman. If she's the same Katana on Batman's original Outsiders roster, that's not a very favorable match up for Katana...one good hit from Diana, that fight is WAY over...
JohnnyKrypton - 2/21/2013, 6:13 AM
"Catwoman vs Batman, Katana vs Wonder Woman"

These are 'match-ups?' Why, because Johns says so? Please. He's terrible. All this does is diminish the main characters even further.
SUPERSHADOWBAT - 2/21/2013, 7:52 AM
Superman vs MM, epic fight, but Superman takes it.
Boogie138 - 2/21/2013, 9:30 AM
ok everyone is basing their opinons on the old DCU not new 52U. we don't know the limits of what these characters can do yet. vibe and katana both seem to be different than they used to be but exactly how has yet to be determined. we already know the 52U justice league are really the not same heroes we remember. the whole point of these match ups is to get us to ask how is this fight possible? its called laying the groundwork.

i am still on the fence about how i feel on the new 52 but i will not be assuming i know anything about these cats until i see them in action.
GarthRanzz - 2/21/2013, 2:53 PM
Superman versus MM is a great match depending on how Jonn handles fire in the new 52. Vibe versus Flash is interesting based on Vibes new dimensional powers. Baz versus Jordan is good. Baz seems more violent, but Hal has the experience. Aquaman versus Hawkman is bloody epic. Star Girl versus Cyborg is unknown....depending on how powerful the Cosmic staff is. Wonder Woman versus Katana is the big miss match. I think Catwoman is as good as any non powered hero against Batman, but it still is lopsided. I think you need one of the following for Batman....the Beyonder, Spectre, Element Lad, Phoenix, Amythist, or Captain Universe. I am not saying Batman couldn't beat any of them given time to plan....but these would most likely beat him.
DukeAcureds - 3/3/2013, 4:52 AM
Martian Manhunter and Katana are shitting themselves in fear and horror.
