UPDATE: COMICS: Joshua Hale Fialkov Quit GREEN LANTERN Because DC Is Killing John Stewart

Apparently, a recent editorial decision from DC Comics to kill Green Lantern John Stewart is what made Joshua Fialkov decide he didn't want to write the series after all. If you could pick one GL to take a dirt nap, would it be John? Stewart lives!

Green Lantern John Stewart To DieThat's what CBR is reporting as confirmed (they likely spoke to the writer directly). Here's what Fialkov originally said he wanted to write about:

"For me, the attraction was that I wanted to tell a crime story on a galactic level. That was my pitch to DC. Geoff [Johns] and all of the other guys have done such an amazing job, prior to us, of telling those big, giant space operas. Now it's time to narrow it down. Let's do stories that almost fall into a different genre while still being in the Green Lantern universe."

Now imagine pitching that to DC, getting the gig and then being told that the series needs to go in a direction very different from what you had envisioned, namely you need to weave in killing John Stewart. I imagine there are a few comic book writers out there who would say that such things are simply the nature of writing for 'The Big Two' which is an entirely different animal from creator-owned work. However, I'm sure there's an equal number (maybe slightly more) of writers who would side with Fialkov. I'll put the question to you guys, would you keep quiet and crank out a new story for the exposure and compensation or would you follow Fialkov's example and walk off the title?

This also makes me wonder if another character is on the chopping block as well over in Action Comics.

UPDATE: Bleeding Cool is reporting that because this plot point was leaked fairly early and because of the outcry from fans and in forums, John Stewart has been taken off the chopping block. Chalk this up as a victory for the little guys!

Ah..another case of the the sacrificial negro.
RexDartEskimoSpy - 3/21/2013, 10:58 AM
It could be both stories. A classic whodunit: "Who killed John Stewart?"

As much as I've loved Geoff Johns' space opera stuff, I'd like to see the Green Lantern Corps acting like cops instead of soldiers. (And ever since the Justice League cartoon John has been soldier boy.) Sounds like a good change of pace to me. (Which, of course, is why DC won't go for it. Dan DiDio prefers to make stupid changes.)
ItsATrap - 3/21/2013, 11:02 AM
Why do they need to kill of Stewart? He's the MAN!
Does anyone still like Kyle Rayner? I found he's gotten boring lately... make him interesting again! ...by killing him!
tmeadows34 - 3/21/2013, 11:02 AM
I'm confused aside from the the title and banner of this article, nowhere IN the article does it stated that kill John Stewart was the plan...
It really just reads as creative storytelling differences.
crashrendar - 3/21/2013, 11:08 AM
John's pretty boring in the comics. Much more exciting in the jl:u cartoon though.i wonder how him dying impacts the justice league movie? They might include cyborg as the token black hero instead.
CavEl - 3/21/2013, 11:09 AM
Oh sure, kill the black guy...
SLEDGE - 3/21/2013, 11:09 AM
I'm very excited about this.

Now it's looking like he WON'T be the GL in the Justice League movie.

Lets go Hal!
nikgrid - 3/21/2013, 11:11 AM
Yeah I don't know where the John Stewart info is, But I'd kill Kyle anyway.
dezdigi - 3/21/2013, 11:12 AM
If death only mattered in comics ...
BlueMex - 3/21/2013, 11:12 AM
What @tmeadows34 said ^
ATrueHero1987 - 3/21/2013, 11:14 AM
Why?? He's one of the most well know black superhero out there.
ATrueHero1987 - 3/21/2013, 11:16 AM
Oh and I did read an article saying he left because DC wanted to kill off John Stewart.
StrangerX - 3/21/2013, 11:18 AM
This has got to be an early april fools right?

jasonicus - 3/21/2013, 11:18 AM
So they are killing off one minority and adding another(Baz)?
knocturnalzen10 - 3/21/2013, 11:19 AM
-_- this B***S***
rodddb - 3/21/2013, 11:19 AM
They feel there are to many minorities now that they added Bak (I think that's correct). Kyle Rayner is just boring right now.

DC, you really know how to alienate your fans. Who's next ICON? Probably not since you're making sure know one knows who he is anyway...
MrXer0 - 3/21/2013, 11:19 AM
They should've taken out Kyle first, then let JS sacrifice himself to save the uni... yada, yada, yada. They'll bring him back when they reboot this mess with the nouveau-new 52.
indigobolt956 - 3/21/2013, 11:20 AM
isnt hal already dead?? I havent read much GL
its on my tpb or hardcover pick up list
Not on my monthly list
BrotherJohnson - 3/21/2013, 11:20 AM
SLEDGE-

Hal Jordan is a douche. John Stewart is infinitely cooler than Hal will ever be.
ninzen - 3/21/2013, 11:20 AM
I've never been a big Stewart fan, but I have enjoyed what they've done with him over the last 4 or 5 years.

My two favorites are Kyle and Guy. I liked Hal when I was 10, but now that I'm older I don't. He's the boring one. I don't ever get the impression his character cares about much other than chasing after Carol.
JayOh - 3/21/2013, 11:21 AM
Where is the info? Nowhere does he state that Stewart is dying.
InfiniteMonkey - 3/21/2013, 11:25 AM
Why not an Asian Green Lantern?...Or is that too much to ask for a bunch of white guys writing it?

...Or maybe another 50 or so years when Asians are actually tolerable?...
shadearts - 3/21/2013, 11:27 AM
i guess it Makes since to Dc theyajust introduced a Darkskin Arabic Decent lantern why do we need two minority lanterns *sarcasm*

Don't yall know the new black is agay dudes and Muslims *sarcasm again* and now they got both
BackwardGalaxy - 3/21/2013, 11:27 AM
Makes sense. They added a minority to their lineup, so now they get to kill one.

It would be a dream come true to work for DC Comics. But I am more and more getting the feeling like my next dream come true after that would be quitting DC Comics.
knocturnalzen10 - 3/21/2013, 11:29 AM
The extinct of hals will or imagination usually is f***in boxing gloves smh this really is a rim job
CavEl - 3/21/2013, 11:30 AM
Shut your old ass up, Gusto.

Hal Jordan rapes puppies. Lamest character ever!

1.) Baz
2.) John Stewart

1000.) Everyother GL

1 trillion.) Hal Jordan.
CavEl - 3/21/2013, 11:32 AM
Green Lanterns are all lame as hell, anyway.
supermarioworldE - 3/21/2013, 11:32 AM
Get rid of guy instead. he's a total assh*le.
Netman0007 - 3/21/2013, 11:32 AM
Why are they killing him again? I like him on JL/JLU, and would prefer they use him in the JLA film if they can't make the Hal Jordan of the comics the fans deserve.

The early Johns stuff with GL, up to Sinestro Corps War is great, everything that came after, for me, sadly, is SHIT.

Kill Baz. That guy sucks. Stewart is cool. Or Rayner.

I want to see Green Lantern being more like it was in the silver age, space cop stories, instead of this intergalactic war type thing all of the time. Not my attraction to GL. Also, maybe some more earth bound stories of actual superhero-ing.
Netman0007 - 3/21/2013, 11:35 AM
I prefer the John Stewart of the JL/JLU show to the John Stewart of the comics anyway. If they made him the same character he was on the show, I'd be very pissed they were going to kill him. I don't think it's a good idea to kill him all around, but I am not as pissed about it as I would be were he the JL/JLU John Stewart.
indigobolt956 - 3/21/2013, 11:35 AM
infinitemonkey wow what an racist asshole its ok to be racist against white people though??
Interesting
SwingsetKnight - 3/21/2013, 11:38 AM
Honestly, I'd be calling for Hal Jordan to get the axe. I've never found his character interesting, and my perception has generally been that he's only "the most popular GL" because of the nostalgia factor and lack of stand-out successor.

Then again, I'm not really a fan of the broader Green Lantern "thing" anyway -- just never appealed to me. So I'm probably not the best one to comment on this.
InfiniteMonkey - 3/21/2013, 11:39 AM
@indigo - quite right. Please accept my apologies.

The writers can do what they want...fans are just erm...fans?...once again sorry.
ATrueHero1987 - 3/21/2013, 11:40 AM
@Levi Damn, that's a lot a [frick]s in your last statement.lol

I agree, it sucks that they may kill him off.
OrganizedChaos - 3/21/2013, 11:42 AM
honestly, I'd kill off both Guy Gardner and John Stewart, but thats just me
ralfinader - 3/21/2013, 11:43 AM
GL is lame idea, but Jon Stewart in JL and JLU was easily may fave. DC sucks. [frick] Baz, Gaynor, and Jordan. Gardner was cool back in the day.
ckal - 3/21/2013, 11:44 AM
Killing the black guy. Obviously.
ACira - 3/21/2013, 11:45 AM
It works both ways. On the one hand, he shouldn't be forced to write a story he isn't comfortable writing, especially if it involves such a huge change. On the other hand, he could've taken that concept and crafted one of the best ever Green Lantern stories from it.
ninzen - 3/21/2013, 11:51 AM
Hal Jordan sucks. I'd rather have Ch'p as the main character of Green Lantern, or even better, G'nort.
Marauder - 3/21/2013, 11:56 AM
The black guy always has to be killed off.... Sure go ahead..
Bandido - 3/21/2013, 11:57 AM
Has there actually been any good stories with John?

I'm asking cuz I really don't know lol im not trying to sound like an asshole!

ACira - 3/21/2013, 12:04 PM
@infinitemonkey there was an asian Green Lantern on the Batman Beyond TV show if that helps.

Green Lantern is kind of becoming a lame concept nowadays anyway. It seems people, including the writers of the comics, just see Green Lantern as a way of putting more minority characters into a costume that has a recognizable insignia. And I'm not trying to say I'm against ethnic diversity in comics, far from it, but it just seems so unoriginal to just put every minority character in the same costume. Don't get me wrong, John Stewart is a cool character, and I've heard Simon Baz is great too.

But why not branch out a little? Throw some ethnic diversity around the entire DCnU! Now, I doubt Superman, Batman, or Wonder Woman will ever be anything but white characters. But there are so many interchangeable superhero identities apart from Green Lantern. Flash, for example. Everyone loves Barry and Wally, but the number of Flashes is growing so much that he could have his own Corps soon - how about an Asian Flash?
Robin just died in the comics, and Batman's probably going to recruit a new sidekick - if it's not that Harper Row character, why not an African-American Robin? What about a Middle-Eastern Batgirl?

Or, here's a wild idea. New characters? I mean, like 1% of the characters in DC comics are minority characters, and I'd say about half of them have their own identities, while the others share theirs with other characters. And Marvel are kind of guilty of this too. Why not give us something new? I thought that was what the New 52 was all about.
Nomis - 3/21/2013, 12:07 PM
Dag. I don't like this.

I bet it's cause he was messing with that white girl. ;)

Splenda - 3/21/2013, 12:14 PM
What the everloving [frick]... John Stewart is 1000x better than Guy "douchebag" Gardner or Kyle Rayner (aka Peter Parker wannabe).

@Nomis
Hawkgirl... he tapped that.
beane2099 - 3/21/2013, 12:15 PM
Green Lantern USED to be about space cops. Remmeber those days? Don't get me wrong, I love what Johns has brought to the table in terms of concepts and new characters, but I've been ready for villains and situations that aren't just part of other various lantern corps. That's a shame.

knocturnalzen10 - 3/21/2013, 12:23 PM
@levi u should leave the image of bender just shooting the tommy gun after that one lol
but ur absolutely correct all the hal fans should thank johns for the interest in him
DaveT - 3/21/2013, 12:24 PM
There are two kinds of comic characters. Live ones and one;s who haven't come back to life yet. I can't imagine why anyone cares about these stupid "death" story lines anymore. I just feel embarrassed for the creative/editorial team when they resort to them. And kinda embarrassed for the fans who are upset at the "loss" of their beloved character. I can't think of a single character who remains dead. Even Gwen Stacy got cloned...though I guess we can declare her deadish still.
Splenda - 3/21/2013, 12:28 PM
...Black Hand.
