ARROW Season Two Will Feature 2 Main Baddies

As the million+ watchers that tuned in every week to the first season of The CW's Arrow, The Dark Archer (John Barrowman) gave Oliver (Stephen Amell) all that he could handle in his fledgling superhero career. Is he ready for two separate threats?

By Mark Julian - 5/21/2013
In a new interview with TV Guide, Arrow Executive Producer Marc Guggenheim looks ahead to the second season of The CW's Arrow. Specifically, the discussion centered around the type of adversaries Oliver will face moving forward. While the first season featured a plethora of "villain of the week" adversaries for Oliver, the main antagonist was Malcolm Merlyn played by John Barrowman. In season two, there will of course be more, "smaller" antagonists for Arrow to face but this time there will be TWO "Malcolm Merlyn-type" ne'er-do-wells plaguing Starling City. Said Guggenheim:

"We made no secret of the fact that we subscribe to the Whedonesque model of having a big bad, and in Season 2, we'll actually have two big bads. They'll both be very recognizable names to fans of the comic book. We're really excited about both of them. With Malcolm and the Dark Archer, we sort of had two big bads in one person. In Season 2, we're going to split them up essentially, and there will be a Malcolm-esque big bad and a Dark Archer-esque big bad."

What are the odds that the Dark Archer-esque villain is Slade Wilson (Manu Bennet) aka Deathstroke? Guggenheim acknowledged that Slade Wilson will definitley be a Season Two focus.

"If the question of Season 1 is, 'What happened to Oliver on that island?' The question of Season 2 is, 'What happened to Slade Wilson on that island?'"

When he returns home to Starling City, his devoted mother Moira, much-beloved sister Thea, and best friend Tommy welcome him home, but they sense Oliver has been changed by his ordeal on the island. As Oliver reconnects with those closest to him, he secretly creates the persona of Arrow – a vigilante – to right the wrongs of his family, fight the ills of society, and restore Starling City to its former glory. By day, Oliver plays the role of a wealthy, carefree and careless philanderer he used to be – flanked by his devoted chauffeur/bodyguard, John Diggle – while carefully concealing the secret identity he turns to under cover of darkness. However, Laurel’s father, Detective Quentin Lance, is determined to arrest the vigilante operating in his city. Meanwhile, Oliver’s own mother, Moira, knows much more about the deadly shipwreck than she has let on – and is more ruthless than he could ever imagine."

marvel72 - 5/21/2013, 3:11 PM
i'm surprised this show even made it to a second season,i gave up with it after episode 5.
THIS - 5/21/2013, 3:11 PM
I seriously don't get why they're not connecting this to the DC films. Make it happen, Warner!
schfuture - 5/21/2013, 3:16 PM
Thanks for putting the identity of the Dark Archer on the description of the article, I was about a third through the season. I don't know if that was a huge spoiler but it would have been nice to get that info on my own and not on the main page.
WhoDaFoo - 5/21/2013, 3:17 PM
@marvel72 That's why...you gave it up after episode 5. Started out decent, but then got a lot more intense as it progressed. Hell, the finale was a thrilling action movie the whole hour.

I'd like to see it connect to the DCU too...but how would they get this realism to mix with Man of Steel? They can probably figure it out, but I'd like to see an Arrow movie eventually!
BabyGroot - 5/21/2013, 3:18 PM
@marvel72 honestly, i was going to give up too. but i decided to hold out long enough to see if it'll ever get better, and it truly did. season finale was the best season finale i've recalled in a long while.
JoeMomma29 - 5/21/2013, 3:20 PM
@ Marvel72

thewonderer - 5/21/2013, 3:26 PM
Sad, very sad to see ignorant people hating on this show. Its freaking amazing now.

"They'll both be very recognizable names to fans of the comic book."

dellamorte1872 - 5/21/2013, 3:32 PM
wouldnt MERLYN be the "dark archer" and deathstroke the malcom-esque dude
SKOne - 5/21/2013, 3:33 PM
Yeah, I really hope Wintergreen survived because I loved the costume and his fights. I think they could go the route of having Brick (Danny Brickwell) and Deathstroke (Wintergreen with one eye) as the big bads.
HavocPrime - 5/21/2013, 3:39 PM
Deathstroke for main villian in season 2
H3LLBLAZER - 5/21/2013, 3:40 PM
@marvel72
LMFAO, GTFO of here. You gave up on Arrow, but you didn't give up on Iron Lady 3? If I recall correctly you loved Iron Crap 3. LOL, you got jokes marvel72. You lost all credibility when you said that Iron Turd 3 was good.
BatmanFTW - 5/21/2013, 3:45 PM
I want Slade to show up in Starling city killing off ppl as Deathstroke as the new Dark Archer villain and idk who for the new Merlynesque villain
sameoldthing - 5/21/2013, 3:51 PM
Arrow is not an amazing show but it's pretty good.
People must realize this fact..NO TV SHOW OR MOVIE WILL EVER BE EXACTLY LIKE THE COMICS.

Just enjoy the fact they can possibly catch some of the magic the books provide.
Comic books & live action are seperate entities..Nuff Said.
typicalfanboy - 5/21/2013, 4:21 PM
i can see sladestroke as a merc hired to kill arrow by the big bad 2, and he finds out he's oliver. meanwhile back on the island slade and oliver fight over shado, and she dies. slades blames oliver and they end up enemies on the island. oliver shoots out slade's eye, and leaves him for dead. slade escapes the island.
MJPETTY7 - 5/21/2013, 4:25 PM
So Brick and Slade for the big bads? I'm up for that!!
ndwwrestler2 - 5/21/2013, 4:26 PM
@crashrender I was kind of with you until the Shado part. I really hope that doesn't happen. I hate love triangles.

But it would be cool to see Slade come back as Deathstroke in present day Starling City.
ThatOneDude - 5/21/2013, 4:40 PM
Definitely looking forward to the second season!

Hoping Slade is the DA big bad and I'm willing to bet that the person Fryers was working for is taking over the role that Merlyn held in the Season 1
TheBoss117 - 5/21/2013, 4:43 PM
It seems like they're gonna drag it out, but I can't wait to see a full-on Deathstroke in all his badass glory.
GeekyCheekyChic - 5/21/2013, 5:32 PM
great show- can't wait for season 2.
unknownfacts - 5/21/2013, 5:51 PM
Great show can't wait for season 2.
typicalfanboy - 5/21/2013, 6:11 PM
@ndwwrestler2 - it's cw. of course its going to happen.
SuperAwesomeBadassness - 5/21/2013, 6:38 PM
@grif how has it ran out of ideas, exactly?
shadearts - 5/21/2013, 7:46 PM
At first we hardly heard anything about old deathstroke now he almost everywhere This Show, Injustice gods Among us Game, and now the Batman Arkham Orgins game and main baddie of season two. Dc must got big plans for him in the comics or movies or something
superotherside - 5/21/2013, 8:47 PM
I'm figuring that Slade will change though out Season 2, and ultimately show his villainous side in Season 3.

Wondering who the two big bads are going to be though.
CapFanLex005 - 5/21/2013, 8:56 PM
hope this comes to Netflix i never watched it but would on there
Knightstalker - 5/21/2013, 10:01 PM
Okay fanboys, CW clearly learned a few lessons from ten years of "Crapville". I actually have higher hopes for Arrow because of that. Season two looks to be even more spectacular than season one. Hopefully Ollie upgrades his costume, his arsenal, and grows a little face hair. Oh, and BTW, we still have to deal with Roy Harper. I expect he will spend the entire season hunting down the vigilante and deciding whether or not to follow in his footsteps.
DutchMovieFan - 5/21/2013, 10:40 PM
SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER Have Malcolm and Tommy ever been comfirmed dead? Deadshot was listed as dead on the Arrow wikia after "The lone gunman", but he returned anyway.
PenditaMarah - 5/22/2013, 1:43 AM
Marvel72

You gave up at ep 5 which is for me quite stupid.the show, after ep 5 are more intensive than the first 5 ep.this series even hint the green lantern and flash city.oh,even the ferris jet plane.
jlabatman - 5/22/2013, 8:40 AM
Hell yeah, bring on the villains! Bring on Cheshire!
MarkJulian - 5/22/2013, 8:56 AM
Tommy is dead. We don't know for sure if Malcolm is dead or not, his status is just like Deadshot's after he took that arrow to the eye.
darkjoker1 - 5/22/2013, 10:48 AM
cant wait season two is going to be awesome :D
JGAZM - 5/22/2013, 3:13 PM
Had my doubts for the first few eps but show found its footing and has so far delivered solid entertainment. They've kept the Dawson's Creek-Smallville vibe at a distance and its working.
Great season finale! bring on season 2!
dnno1 - 5/22/2013, 3:16 PM
I think the Malcom-esque big bad will be Walter Steel while the Dark Archer-esque big bad will be Deathstroke (William Wintergreen). I still do not think we will see the Slade Wilson/Deathstroke until much later on in the series since there may be a lot more to tell about the character through island flashbacks.
BANE5000 - 5/22/2013, 5:49 PM
I wouldnt mind them showing about Slade on the island while at the same time still showing flashbacks of Ollie, Slade and Sado after stopping Fryes, but some questions still need to be answered when it comes to the island...

What did they do after that there confrontation with Fryes?

Why was Ollie seemingly alone when he was rescued, where were Slade and Shado?

How did Slade end up on the island and maybe a bit of his life before getting here ?
technodrome518 - 6/1/2013, 2:17 AM
I really enjoyed this show. I liked it a lot more then I thought I would. The actors are all great and the stories have been executed nicely. Some improvements could be made to the suit, but its a good look for season 1. Stephen Amell has really dedicated himself to this role and it shows through during his performances on screen. He's doing great as Green Arrow. I want to see Oliver train Roy in season 2,Slade to come back as Deathstroke, and Laurel to somehow become Black Canary.
