Why don't they just hire creators that are good writers and artists and leave it at that?

So allow Women writers to write for Woman characters only, its not like a female could do a team book *COUGH* GAIL SIMONE *COUGH* or a male character lead book right?* This still seems sexist since I have yet to see a woman writer on a male lead title
SugarYumYum
SugarYumYum - 7/29/2011, 8:05 PM
Umm... so... are they suggesting that they been reluctant to allow women creators opportunities to work on major projects... b... efore?

I just don't get why this would be worthy of announcing unless there's been some underlying sexism they're trying to address...? *confused*

lol @SugarYumYum. I agree. Way to shoot yourself in the foot DC.

It's pretty f'd up that they have a hard time believing that women can do justice to their main male superheroes. Maybe thats what they need in order to breathe new life in these superheroes instead of rebooting the whole frickin thing. You know what they say about a woman's touch . . .

WHO put Jim Lee, Dan DiDio and Geoff Johns in charge of DC COMICS anyway???

These three have RUINED it. They gave us rainbow lanterns, are rebooting 70 years of HISTORY, and now are trying to FORCE us to like FEMALE CHARACTERS who we probably DON'T or WON'T like.

Only good FEMALE characters are WONDER WOMAN, SUPERGIRL, andHARLEY QUINN and that's with the CLASSIC COSTUME. Have you SEEN what JIM, DAN, and GEOFF have done to my PRECIOUS Harley??? Look at her in SUICE SQUAD reboot. Horrible costume!

the heroes need to be more racially diverse imo

@MikeHawk: Agreed. And not just make more black characters like they always just do. Include Indians, Hispanics, Asians, Biracial, etc. Hell, even include some gay characters, add some frickin drama!

Dear DC.

Female Character's Fail!
Minority Characters Fail.

Diverse.....right. Static is WAY over due for a movie and new series, but despite his success what happens? Suck it DC.

@SugarYumYum&JULEZ13 - The publishers are just addressing the fans and readers that are concerned about the female presence in DC. Its a good thing that when fans write to their favorite comic book company that there is a positive response. A positive response from DC shows that they are listening to the readers and acknowledging their opinions. I'm glad that the DC publishers wrote this letter, it shows that they have respect and class.

People,it's not like DC hasn't tried to reboot continuity in the past has it?
I remember how shocking Crisis on Infinite Earths was back in 1985 when the Barry Allen Flash and Supergirl were killed off.I was appalled that the annual JLA/JSA cross dimensional team ups were ended and that there would be no Phantom Zone,no Kandor,no Krypto,no Clark Kent/Lana Lang T.V. anchor team and no Lex Luthor flying around in a battlesuit. Had there been an internet back in 1986,I would have cried out "Thats not Superman" when I found out he didn't start out as Superboy, couldn't fly faster then light and had his strength lowered from moving planets to lifting an Oceanliner with effort. Those changes opened up some of the best storylines I would read in my now 38 years of reading Superman. DC is doing this not to take something from you, but to draw in the next generation of fans who don't remember "The Man Of Steel" or the "Death of Superman" or "Superman Birthright".People seem to focus on what is left behind and not on whats before them.

The last thing anyone wants is DC hireing a bunch of females just for the sake of it.
Speaking of female writers anyone know what Devin Grayson is at these days, she wrote a patheon of bat-books in the early 2000's, including Nightwing, Joker mini's, Ras Al Ghul Year One and Gotham Knights.

If a woman is "the right man for the job" thats fine. But really there are some lines of work that tend to be male dominated (police or stand up comedians) and some lines of work are female dominated (nurse or possibly teacher). Though a female lead character might have a different twist or take if it was written by a female vs male. But really a writer is writing for all the parts so its really kind of moot

Also, why isn't a Martian writing for Martian Manhunter?!
Herosave
Herosave - 7/30/2011, 6:19 AM
Well hey, maybe it wouldn't be so hard for them if they actually put effort into making their female characters work. But I guess its always a sound move when you base adaptations of female comic book characters on low dvd sales of just one.

It's funny how their's a picture of Wonder Woman, Zatanna, and Batgirl on this article, and none of them were created by women.

@EasterBunnyKiller

Only one I'm thinking of right now for Marvel is Marjorie Liu (who is hot) and has done a good job on X-23's series. She's made some smart moves in that series, and the whole crossover with Daken was done very well.

DiDio is an ass. That and the fact that Zatanna and Harley Quinn's new costumes are a frakkin' joke.

MrEko...

I went to Comic Con and Jim Lee said a couple times that Ryan Choi is going to be the Atom in the Justice League comic.

Also I feel the same as most of the people here. DC needs to hire the best writers and artists available so that they can write the best stories they can. If the best writers or artists are women then great I'm all for it. If the best stories involve women leads or in a prominent role then go for it.
