Christopher Nolan Says SUPERMAN Is More Difficult To Bring To The Big Screen Than BATMAN

The Dark Knight Trilogy director, Christopher Nolan, is working with Warner Brothers and DC Comics again by producing Zack Snyder's Superman tale Man Of Steel, which he says is more of a task to develop than what Batman was.

Man Of Steel is scheduled to hit theaters next year on June 14th with Zack Snyder handling directing duties and Christopher Nolan Producing. Nolan is no stranger to the super hero genera having tackled Batman in his famed Dark Knight Trilogy. While talking with The Hollywood Reporter, Nolan said that Superman is completely different to bring to life on the big screen than Batman, saying that its a bit more challenging. "In my honest appraisal, taking on Superman and creating that world is far more difficult than creating the world of the Dark Knight. He (Snyder) has a lot of finishing to do on the movie, it has a very long post-production schedule because, unlike Batman, Superman flies," Nolan said. He went on to say that he feels a little guilty because he has nothing to do with the movie at this point, and "I’m just amazed by what he is doing. It’s not something I would know how to do." Nolan said that all he can really do at this point is be as supportive as he can.

He also went on to sing his praises for Snyder, who is in deep post-production for the movie. "Zack was the perfect man to take this on; he is unbelievably skilled at creating a coherent, cohesive world. Whether it’s a very stylized world, like 300, or something that’s more challenging, more varied, like he did with Watchmen,” he said. Nolan also reiterated that he has no plans to be involved with Warner Brother's Justice League plans, saying that he wasn't to direct again sometime soon, because he will get bored if he doesn't.

Man Of Steel stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Michael Shannon, Antje Traue, Ayelet Zurer, Russell Crowe, Laurence Fishburne with Christopher Meloni, Harry Lennix, and will be released on June 14, 2013.

"it's harder to make Superman boring" lol
ManofSteel22 - 12/27/2012, 12:15 PM
I like how man of steel is going, but how can you judge a director by just 2/5 of his films
JordanKing - 12/27/2012, 12:22 PM
What annoys me about MoS is the inevitability that people will be praising Chris Nolan more than they will Zack Snyder for the film's success. And who can blame them the way this is being advertised.
StrangerX - 12/27/2012, 12:27 PM
I have more confidence in Zack directing MOS than anyone else in the business
ManofSteel22 - 12/27/2012, 12:27 PM
^ I have seen comments on the youtube trailer where some people think that nolan is directing it,just because his name pops up in the trailer, the selling point to this films is nolan and not snyder and the studio knows it,kinda sad really since snyder is probably working his arse off to make it a good film that people are going to judge him for
6of13 - 12/27/2012, 12:28 PM
Snyder's visual take on Krypton and the civil war will be awesome.
SageMode - 12/27/2012, 12:32 PM
Yes Nolan, taking away fantastical elements to a more fantastical character would be more difficult...........
ReeferInferno - 12/27/2012, 12:34 PM
I've loved what Nolan did with the dark knight trilogy, he knows what he's talking about.
Still, if mos is amazing, people will all praise nolan and if the movie's terrible, they'll blame snyder.
Also, why does this website have so much nolan hate?
jimpinto24 - 12/27/2012, 12:34 PM
I like Zack Snyder's take on Superman a lot better.
Superman1974 - 12/27/2012, 12:37 PM
Man of Steel is the Greatest Superhero character ever, that elements which make him Great is His Heart and Desire to help ALL, Superman makes his villains Great, while in batman the villains make him, also thanks to Nolan NO Justice League movie yet, its funny how he slap the face of ALL batman fans with the Robin little scene in the end, THE WORST of the 3 current batman movies tdkr....
toco89 - 12/27/2012, 12:37 PM
Sagemode shows up in every article related to the The Dark Knight trilogy or Nolan just to write comments like,

"Yes Nolan, taking away fantastical elements to a more fantastical character would be more difficult..........."

Or just to write smh. You sorry soul, get a life.
Maximus101 - 12/27/2012, 12:38 PM
This is my most anticipated movie of 2013, it's obviously harder to put superman on the big screen and make it as epic as its going to be. Nolan does not have much to do with this movie so you marvel lovers / Nolan haters can calm down. The first trailer clearly shows that zack has it under control and that we are in for a show! We have some great movies in store for 2013!
bluedude - 12/27/2012, 12:40 PM

i wish wb/dc would just make nolan in charge of thier movies
Make him thier kevin feige

danyu - 12/27/2012, 12:40 PM
Considering how bad he handled the last Batman film, I can't say I'm surprised by this comment.
ReeferInferno - 12/27/2012, 12:43 PM
@superman1974 not sure how the whole robin thing was a slap in the face, i thought it was a nice little nod to the character
Dev7 - 12/27/2012, 12:43 PM
Nolan isn't a fantasy type director. His genre is more drama / mystery type films. I wonder how he was able to collaborate on writing MoS considering his non fantasy genre type background. Looks like Goyer might have done most of the writing which isn't necessarily good.

Nolan is doing the good thing by picking Snyder with his visual effects usage and Nolan is making everything goes fine on the movie to give it that Nolan feeling and giving most of the story but i still count this as a Nolan movie imo.
ralfinader - 12/27/2012, 12:44 PM
Of course this would be difficult for Nolan. Very glad to hear is is hands-off on this, and letting Snyder do his thing.
abw2 - 12/27/2012, 12:44 PM

The only thing about Snyder's Man Of Steel film, that I still haven't gotten over yet, is the the fact there is, still, no freakin' Jimmy Olsen anywhere in the casting... What the [frick]?!!!... Other than that I am, still, very much looking forward to seeing this film, regardless, here, ya know? *unfortunate*; *cool*/P :)

unknownfacts - 12/27/2012, 12:45 PM
So pretty mush to sum it up.Waner Brothers put Nolan's name on the project just to sell it to the movie instead of selling it on it's own merit.Or they're trying to get Bale back for the Justice League rumor movie that's more then unlikely to ever happen.
Rambaldi47 - 12/27/2012, 12:45 PM
I hope MOS doesn't turn into a situation where if it's amazing, Nolan gets all the credit, but if it fails, then everyone blames Snyder. I'm very excited for MOS; Superman will be so refreshing after Batman overload.
toco89 - 12/27/2012, 12:47 PM
@superman1974

How is it Nolan's fault no Justice League movie has been made if he's made one of its most prominent members the single most popular superhero in a time where comic book movies are flourishing.

@intruder

First, I don't like Nolan, second, Sagemode didn't disagree with me, and third, a lot people didn't like something that a lot people saw? Really? What are the odds?
thewonderer - 12/27/2012, 12:49 PM
@Intruder

Except people on this website do not post criticism of something to simply express their opinion, they WANT to start an argument.

Nolan isn't perfect, but with that said you do realize that JOSS WHEDON, KEVIN FEIGE, ALL aren't perfect?

Because I see A LOT more people insulting Nolan right now than Whedon or anyone else for that matter. Hell people aren't even insulting Webb directly for the crap that was TASM.

Most people do like his interpretation of Batman, so go ahead and criticize, but don't get so upset when people defend what they like.

Azazel1 - 12/27/2012, 12:50 PM
Nolan is one of the best there is...
SpideyQuad - 12/27/2012, 12:51 PM
"Zack was the perfect man to take this on; he is unbelievably skilled at creating a coherent, cohesive world.

Um, like "Sucker Punched", which is how I felt after I tried to watch that motion…

… I'm just saying
TheTaskmaster - 12/27/2012, 12:54 PM
Of course Nolan would say that. He couldn't even get Batman right it pains me think about how he would handle Superman.
AC1 - 12/27/2012, 12:58 PM
It is a shame that Nolan will probably get more praise than Snyder if the film is good, and if it's bad Snyder is more likely to attract criticism considering how it's being marketed.

Let's just hope Man Of Steel is more 'Watchmen' and less '300' or even worse, 'Sucker Punch'.
thunderforce - 12/27/2012, 12:58 PM
Well my opinion is I am glad he doesn't know how to make a movie like this , it means he can get out of the way and let JLA be made . I did not like TDK it was too dark and I still have not seen TDKR and I have no desire to since TDK and Nolan has turned me off to his form of Batman .
SpideyQuad - 12/27/2012, 12:59 PM
Oh yeah, I'm a little confused to0… Didn't I see Batman flying in the first two movies?

thewonderer, Why does it always have to be DC versus Marvel? Maybe in some instances it's just less than that. In my case I just don't care for his movies. I like the seriousness because I believe that's Batman more than the campy stuff, but I honestly haven't enjoyed his movies. Does that mean I'm a troublemaker?

Are you going to call me a witch now, and throw rocks at me?
unknownfacts - 12/27/2012, 1:01 PM
I don't know why people get pissed when people bash Nolan and/or The Dark Knight Rises,it had a billion dollar box office.
IgnurRant - 12/27/2012, 1:01 PM
A lot of people don't like Nolan's Batman but collectively they have made over 2.5 billion at the box office. That makes sense.
SpideyQuad - 12/27/2012, 1:02 PM
thunderforce,

We are kindred souls in this. I know exactly what you're saying and how you feel. I walked out of TDK with a frown on my face. My brother who was all hyped up asked me what was wrong. I couldn't answer right away, just that I didn't like what I saw. Later as I thought about it I realized it was a lot of things.I'll just leave it at that.

SpideyQuad - 12/27/2012, 1:05 PM
Germans… It's hard enough trying to figure out their sense a humor or if they even have one. But I guess that goes double for their fans
Shamo - 12/27/2012, 1:05 PM
thats because Superman's a terribly bland character.
InfiniteMonkey - 12/27/2012, 1:08 PM
I reserve judgement until the first two weeks of its release.
This is so reminiscent of Green Lantern...

I am hopeful though...
thunderforce - 12/27/2012, 1:10 PM
All that being said if this Superman movie is the start of a DCCU I am all in as long as it is not as dark as TDK that is . The world is big enough for both a Marvel and a DC cinematic universes .
unknownfacts - 12/27/2012, 1:11 PM
@thunderforce Batman's world is dark and gritty.I've read alot of Batman growing up and every time I pick up a Batman comic I think to myself they gave this guy a children's tv show.He deals with murderers, rapist, and psychopaths and it can get pretty brutal. While Batman doesn't kill there's still alot of blood and gore in his comics.I don't mean to call you out or anything just stating the facts.Batman may not be your type of hero that's cool there are pleanty more between marvel and DC.
INSTANTJUSTICE - 12/27/2012, 1:12 PM

Looks like Nolan is earning his producer credit by saying good things to the press.
PaulRom - 12/27/2012, 1:14 PM
Intruder's at it again! :D

I think Nolan is saying all the right things here. Superman is a character who is much harder to adapt properly than Batman. And I'm glad that he isn't considering it his movie; even if it's not, the idea of his being involved alone makes my anticipation high.
PaulRom - 12/27/2012, 1:14 PM
"Yes Nolan, taking away fantastical elements to a more fantastical character would be more difficult..........."

Yeah, because this Superman won't fly, shoot laser beams or punch somebody through a wall.
