Kevin Feige Says Marvel May Now Release One Sequel And One New Franchise Each Year

We know that Marvel Studios have big plans which reach as far as 2019, and in a recent interview, Kevin Feige has revealed that releasing a sequel followed by a new franchise like Ant-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy could be their new model in the coming years...

IGN Movies recently caught up with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige at the Guardians of the Galaxy press junket and quizzed him about their Phase 3 plans following Ant-Man next summer. This year saw a sequel released in the form of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and then the first movie in a potential new franchise with the James Gunn helmed movie set in space. The same will happen again next year with Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man, so will that be Marvel's method moving forwards? "[Guardians of the Galaxy] fulfilled our desire to do something different," Feige explained, "to start producing, each year, a film that was the sequel to a pre-existing, successful franchise and do something new. We're doing that next year with Age of Ultron, with Ant-Man, and hope to maybe continue that model in the coming years."

If this is the case a new movie will follow Captain America 3, and as many fans believe that we'll see Doctor Strange in 2016, then this seems extremely likely. When the site put this to Feige, he added: "I don't know that we'll keep to [that model] every year, but what we're doing this year and what we're doing next year is: existing franchise, new franchise, existing franchise, new franchise. So I think it would be fun to continue that sort of thing. I don't know that we will [do that] all the time, but as a general model, I think that would be fun." This would be an interesting strategy, and with big annoncements expected at Comic-Con next weekend, it should be very interesting to see how many new franchises are among the titles revealed. What would you guys like to see from Marvel next? Sound off with your thoughts in the usual place!

So is it still 3 films in 2017 or was it just a change in the date?
sKeemAn - 7/21/2014, 11:51 AM
2 movies a year. What happened to making it 3 movies every other year? Maybe that was wishful thinking.
Batmaniac - 7/21/2014, 11:52 AM
I noticed the other day that for the next 3 years, starting with this year, they'll be releasing a sequel and a new franchise each year. I like this model, personally. It keeps things fresh.
ruadh - 7/21/2014, 11:54 AM
Skeeman, yeah I think it may be wishful thinking. They may have an extra in case they have to push a film back or something. Still, hope isn't bad.

I still think iron man 4 and a new character will be the 2017 films.
Jollem - 7/21/2014, 11:55 AM
as long as they are all good movies like iron man 3. otherwise, it would be over-saturating and may turn people off when they see an ad on tv for the newest comic book movie of the month
MightOfMagneto - 7/21/2014, 11:56 AM

Since you already have Blade & GR back at your studio...How about a Doctor Strange, BLade and Ghost Rider team-up movie and call them Marvel Knights?
TChalla - 7/21/2014, 11:56 AM
And yeah what @BatManiac said! Either way this is a great structure for their films! Especially if they have plans up until 2028... Wow, try mapping that out!
EzioKenway1225 - 7/21/2014, 11:56 AM
yeah feige has said this before..i really like it..plus the estabilished franchises help pay for the newer ones
Bekss - 7/21/2014, 11:58 AM
2015-Avengers/Antman
2016-Cap3/Dr Strange
2017-Thor 3/Black Panther/Guardians 2
2018-Hulk 2/Ms Marvel
2019-Avengers 3
MrFridayNights - 7/21/2014, 11:58 AM
So that means that the Phase 3 movies of 2017 will be The Indestructible Hulk and Black Panther.
MrFridayNights - 7/21/2014, 11:59 AM
The Thor movies are the worst franchise of the MCU.
charlie2094 - 7/21/2014, 12:02 PM
Hasn't he said this before?

Definitely like it this way, would help to keep things fresh, and prevent any characters overstaying their welcome. If every year has a great sequel like Winter Soldier, and a seemingly great original property like Guardians, will be awesome.
MrCBM56 - 7/21/2014, 12:02 PM
Hell yeah.
EzioKenway1225 - 7/21/2014, 12:05 PM
i am fine with 2 movies a year from Marvel Studios cause we seem to be soon getting more superhero films from other companies such as WB ,Fox and Sony and plus its hard enough to make 2 films a year
AstonishingArachnid - 7/21/2014, 12:06 PM
2015- Ant Man (new franchise)
2016- Captain America 3 (sequel)
2016- Doctor Strange (new franchise)
2017- Unannounced Sequel
2017- Unannounced New Franchise
2018- Unannounced Sequel
2018- Unannounced New Franchise
2019- Probably Avengers 3

My theory is that well get Thor 3 and Black Panther in 2017 then Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and a new franchise (maybe Ms Marvel) in 2018.
MightOfMagneto - 7/21/2014, 12:07 PM
"The Thor movies are the worst franchise of the MCU."

Gotta agree.

Thanks to Chris Hemsworth wooden acting.
HankBeastMcCoy - 7/21/2014, 12:11 PM
They said this LAST year also
sKeemAn - 7/21/2014, 12:12 PM

"The Thor movies are the worst franchise of the MCU."

I think this is a good model. One new property and one big sequel a year is good. I always felt 3 movies a year was too much and plus we don't know what Warner Bros. and the other studios are going to be doing and it is becoming too much. I am personally already feeling the fatigue and I enjoyed all the comic movies this year, even ASM 2, but they just don't feel special to me like they did years ago. It is a bit oversaturated, but that is just my opinion.

I'm not scared of lions and tigers and bears!
But I'm scared of loving youuuuu...
ekrolo2 - 7/21/2014, 12:14 PM
@MrFridayNights

Agreed, they [frick]ing suck along with the iron man sequels.
EzioKenway1225 - 7/21/2014, 12:15 PM
yeah get rid of the human side characters except Jane cause i like Jane and i think Thor needs a connection to Humanity but get rid of the human side characters
EzioKenway1225 - 7/21/2014, 12:16 PM
anyway ,i hope Marvel Announces a Black Panther film on Saturday
KidGoku - 7/21/2014, 12:17 PM
I need Black Panther already
KidGoku - 7/21/2014, 12:17 PM
Hell i'll even audition for T'Challa myself.
marvel72 - 7/21/2014, 12:17 PM
i hope we can keep getting new franchises each year.

nova
ms.marvel
the inhumans
dr.strange
black panther
thunderbolts
agents of atlas
namor

would be all welcome additions to the cinematic universe.
KingNTheKong - 7/21/2014, 12:18 PM
Hopefully we get BP in 2017.
MecoBoy - 7/21/2014, 12:18 PM
Y cuando van a sacar El Chapulín Colorado???

Ya es tiempo para un reinicio!!
KingNTheKong - 7/21/2014, 12:19 PM
Even Inhumans would be nice.
String - 7/21/2014, 12:19 PM
Since there are already writers attached to Thor 3 -that is probably the first movie in 2017. With a new franchise -most likely Black Panther -following afterward. But has it been determined there are 3 movies in 2017? Or was the May 2017 pushed to July 2017? I've seen both being reported in the media.

Someone needs to ask his ass about the one shots and if they are going to continue them at all from now on...
FirstAvenger - 7/21/2014, 12:21 PM
Black Panther!
EzioKenway1225 - 7/21/2014, 12:22 PM

TChalla - 7/21/2014, 12:22 PM

I would be shocked if we didn't get an official Black Panther movie announcement and release date at the con this weekend.
