COMICS: Alan Scott (The Original Green Lantern) Confirmed As DC's New Gay Superhero

Earth 2 writer James Robinson confirms that original Green Lantern Alan Scott is indeed the superhero who will come out of the closet next week, and he also reveals that this writes the character's son Obsidian out of continuity.

Created 70 years ago, the original Green Lantern will indeed be revealed as a gay man in next week's Earth 2 #2. Despite being a married father of two in the previous continuity, the younger version of the superhero has a boyfriend in "The New 52" as can be seen from the artwork below. "He's very much the character he was. He's still the pinnacle of bravery and idealism. He's also gay," writer James Robinson told The New York Post today. "The only downside of his being young was we lose his son, Obsidian, who's gay. So I thought, 'Why not make Alan Scott gay?' That was the seed that started it."

"It's a realistic depiction of society," he added. "You have to move with the times. He's a type-A personality who doesn't hide in the shadows. I hope he's a positive figure. If there's some kind of kid out there who's reading the comic and who's worried about the person he is, maybe it will give him a positive sense of who he is. Or maybe a different kid will read it and decide I don't need to bully some kind of kid in school." Many of you were already fairly vocal when it was just rumoured that DC would be making Alan Scott gay, but how do you feel now that it's confirmed? Sound off with your thoughts in the usual place.

I thought someone posted this earlier?
Tomontherun99 - 6/1/2012, 2:58 AM
As long as the character's sexuality doesn't define his personality and characterization I really don't see how this is an issue except for conservatives and homophobic @$$holes. So what if he's gay? This is Earth-2 and this is not the same Alan Scott from the golden age, this is an alternate version of the character like the gay Colossus in Ultimate Marvel.
xizorkatarn - 6/1/2012, 3:21 AM
Wow! What a publicity stunt!
Marxman12 - 6/1/2012, 3:25 AM
@Tomontherun99 I'm conservative. I don't hate gays nor am I afraid of them. I have family members and friends who are gay. Your comment is ugly and divisive. Its odd that the biggest proponents of "tolerance" often are the most narrow-minded and intolerant.
Marxman12 - 6/1/2012, 3:28 AM
@xizorkatarn Indeed it is! I commented earlier when this was first
reported that DC is only doing what is comercially "trendy".
Xandera - 6/1/2012, 3:31 AM
Lame...
Tomontherun99 - 6/1/2012, 3:32 AM
@Marxman12 I was aiming more at the Mitt Romney Conservatives, besides here in the UK there are unfortunately more hardline conservatives here who are against gay marriage and the like, sorry for any offense I may have caused
FireKnightRises - 6/1/2012, 3:45 AM
the [frick] happened with comic??
Tomontherun99 - 6/1/2012, 3:47 AM
@DarKnightRises It's called the 21st Century, it has gay people in it. Is that a problem?
SupermansBeard - 6/1/2012, 3:48 AM
This isn't your grandfather's Green Lanter!...well actually it IS only he's a homosexual. lmao These people.
FireKnightRises - 6/1/2012, 3:57 AM
it should be hal jordan

Hellsing - 6/1/2012, 3:57 AM
Wasn't impressed with the first issue writting was ptetty meh how ever the art was some what decent. I don't see why people are making such a huge deal out of this, the bigger issue is the head gear jay garrick has now what the [frick] is that all about.
Hellsing - 6/1/2012, 4:00 AM
And quick question since this half assed reboot/relaunch/copout happened does Jade exist in the GL universe I haven't really kept up wot

So stupid.
SupLezz - 6/1/2012, 4:15 AM
frak DC and gays, they have to ruin everything that's sacred.. they have to convert a well-known and loved character because if they'd create a new, no one would buy that shit.. i agree with SirWinsalot, they are shoving it down our throats
arachnidzpr7 - 6/1/2012, 4:15 AM
what the [frick] is wrong with comics these its full of shit i mean [frick] "time for relaxing and some romance" [frick] me all the gays running around in the greates comics in the world [frick] this messed up logic of bull sshit
AnonymousGuy - 6/1/2012, 4:24 AM
Some of that dialogue and that kiss seems a little....forced. It's like the writers have never been in love. lolol
mgeoff88 - 6/1/2012, 4:29 AM
This doesn't really bother me, and it even takes place on Earth-2. As long as the story is good, I don't have a problem with this.

I will say though, the writing could you some work: "Why not, it sounds magical..."

Is there something wrong with writing "Why not, that sounds great" instead?

@itbegins2005 I agree, I hope they aren't doing this as some kind of publicity stunt. I don't think companies realize it's insulting to gay people to use homosexuality as way to make headlines so they can sell more comics.

It trivializes what the companies are trying to accomplish in the first place.
Caedus137 - 6/1/2012, 4:29 AM
Hmmm... Bit of a queer one this (pun intended)... On the one hand I totally agree with the sentiment and the agenda, but in the other hand it does seem a bit gratuitous... It seems with all the talk of booking into a hotel for a bit of romance etc, theyre almost trying too hard. If they're taking a "He's gay, get over it" point of view, then why all the talk of romance and hotel rooms? They dont write that sort of thing between Lois & Clark, or Scott & Jean, so why now?
ImnotDaredevil - 6/1/2012, 4:30 AM
Looks like he's ok with wood now.;)
mbomb22 - 6/1/2012, 4:32 AM
i dont have a problem with him being gay, but what i do take issue with is Sam saying 'via.' NOBODY says 'via'

SupermansBeard - 6/1/2012, 4:35 AM
@mgeoff88 and @itbegins2005

And in the end, everyone feels alienated, gay liberals and straight conservatives alike. lol By the way, I like how it's always the straight people for gay things, white people who are racist against white people for what white people did over a hundred years ago, men who are feminists, or stupid stuff like this lady writer who got offended for adopted children cause of Thor's line when adopted people weren't offended. It's sad really cause people just want to feel like they are doing something important or more to the point want to FEEL IMPORTANT when in reality, the most important people are the ones who wake up every morning and live a simple life (cue Shinedown's Simple Man cover).
Magnus66 - 6/1/2012, 4:35 AM
I was never a fan of forced "diversity"... Clearly the writer has an agenda.
Ha1frican - 6/1/2012, 4:37 AM
Called it. I said "Golden Age Version" of a big character because I thought it was Alan lol
DarthDan - 6/1/2012, 4:40 AM
FAB-U-LOUS!
Jollem - 6/1/2012, 4:45 AM
@ImnotDaredevil - nice. i got that one
SupermansBeard - 6/1/2012, 4:54 AM
@Just1Superguy

I would say that I still have a problem with that clip of comic you posted on there. I obviously don't have anything against black people. But I do hate how ALL white people are considered "ignorant" towards race stuff, and that THAT fact is shoved down our throats. I didn't have a problem with Spider-man being black or anything like that but I'm so sick of getting on here, and every time there's a gay thing and I put my views out there, I'm considered no better than a racist. We always here what the media tells us, that all white people are racist and all conservatives hate gays. Obviously not true. Christians can't be summed up by one church and most certainly not Westboro Baptist Church (who are obviously NOT Christians in spite of what they claim to be) and all conservatives are not the toothless, warmongering morons that television paints them out to be. Just this past Sunday, at church, we had a gentlemen who was a homosexual that visited, no one at my church is "tolerant" but we're not hateful, it didn't come up once, he knew where we stood but he came anyways and we were able to love him without accepting the lifestyle he chose.
blvdnoise - 6/1/2012, 5:00 AM
I can't say I'd have any problems with creating NEW CHARACTERS with any certain (gay/bi/les) preference would bother me, at all really. But altering an already established character origin/back story (to this degree) just to fit today's social acceptance (and,or) standards just gets under my skin..
SupermansBeard - 6/1/2012, 5:01 AM
@blvdnoise, I liked reading your comment with your icon next to it. lol
Watcher - 6/1/2012, 5:02 AM
gay this, gay that... You guys are obsessed.

This crap is on main every single day now.

Are there any heterosexual relationships in comics these days? Cause if there is we aren't hearing about it.
Hellsing - 6/1/2012, 5:02 AM
Your talking about the media here when has it ever shown the full picture all muslims are apparently terrorists who blow them selves up for a laugh, and according to the media all the crimes that are commited by black people. So white conservatives are not the only 'victims' of the media.
pro346 - 6/1/2012, 5:02 AM
When is wonder(wo)man going to get a sex change operation...that would be the politically correct thing to do. If Alan Scott lived in Tasmania he would get arrested!
ImnotDaredevil - 6/1/2012, 5:04 AM
@tea . From what I've seen from you over the years you'd do a slow puncture if it wasn't for the draft!;)
pro346 - 6/1/2012, 5:07 AM
@tea lets hope your missis don't read cbm...

I'm not upset, but that's just "straight" ridiculous.
My lady knows nothing about comics, but she saw the movie, and when I told her "Green Lantern" was gay, she asked, "Are you joking?"
mgeoff88 - 6/1/2012, 5:25 AM
@AnonymousGuy You hit the nail on the head. The dialogue doesn't seem very organic, does it?

@RedHood89 You know what's funny? I pretty much am everything you said word for word. I am a straight, white male who stands up for equal rights for gay people, women, and minorities.

I'm a passionate person who has strong beliefs. I stand up for things I believe are worth fighting for. I don't do it to feel important, I do it because I believe it is important. Otherwise, I wouldn't do it all.

@teabag I just want you to know, if you ever need someone to talk to you about your problems in the bedroom. I'm here for you, man. :P
Greengo - 6/1/2012, 5:31 AM
This is getting old already.
Greengo - 6/1/2012, 5:36 AM
I have gay friends and they are funny and witty but GD what the [frick] is up with rubbing their sexuality and lifestyle in everyone's faces?

It's not enough to accept it... you have to embrace it. Once gay marriage passes their next goal will be to have gay history taught in elementary school. It's already happening in California.
hellfire - 6/1/2012, 5:43 AM
@Tea LOL what film is that from
JatevinM - 6/1/2012, 5:46 AM
I never thought I'd see the day when my favorite comic book company wound up on my shit list. Instead of making straight characters gay create gay characters this pisses me off.
hellfire - 6/1/2012, 5:47 AM
@Just1 cheers I'll have to check it out.
EastcoastAvenger - 6/1/2012, 5:48 AM
Seems to be a lot of grown men drawing pictures of grown men kissing grown men lately.
misterwizz - 6/1/2012, 5:48 AM

This is stupid, this is nothing more than a publicity stunt. Why couldn't they just create a new character instead of taking a pre-existing character who was clearly straight/bi (Alan Scott was married to a woman may I remind you)? Oh wait I forgot that would be the smart thing to do.
mctrinket - 6/1/2012, 5:50 AM

Yes, a married father of two kids suddenly decides to be gay. Let's write his son out of existence. Yeah, let's wash away all that icky hetero-dirtiness and make a good, ass slapping gay man! DC comics, what douches!

This is exactly what I was stating earlier. If you must make a gay hero to show how PC you are, make a new character, like Rainbow man, or Assless chaps man. But leave established heroes alone! Fans of those heroes don't want to wake up to find their favorite character has embraced a fringe group ideal. Whether you agree with it or not, doing that is wrong and stupid. I guess that makes me a homophobe.
