Ten New Stills From THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY

By Josh Wilding - 7/2/2012
The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

Gollum kinda looks like a cartoon character. Still excited for it, however.

marcuskiner - 7/2/2012, 7:42 PM
I just can't seem to get excited for this movie, like the original trilogy...
JamesClement - 7/2/2012, 7:46 PM
Wow there really is an increase in the detail of Gollum here. In hindsight I would have liked to see what Del Toro would have done but never-the-less I'm excited for this.
xfan320 - 7/2/2012, 7:58 PM
Gandalf looks appropriately badass.

my only real worry about this film is the '2 parter' ordeal... I trust PJ has found a good 'half story' to tell...

I'm gonna be super-bummed if part 1 leaves the audience wanting more, or that it won't feel like a good movie on its own...
TonyChu - 7/2/2012, 7:59 PM
Andy Serkis deserves a [frick]ing Oscar already.

@blackandyellow:..or it would be if 3D and 48fr/sec. didn't make it look like a Tv soap opera. Don't get me wrong, I LOOOOOVE LOTR but I'm kinda worried here. the acting, the direction, the cinematograpy might all be excellent but will people focus on that rather than the 48fr/sec; issue? I honestly don't know. Plus, TDKr is coming up soon so I guess we'll never know wich film is the best of the year until the year is actually over.
TheAbomination - 7/2/2012, 11:09 PM
Gollum looks incredible. Gandalf as well. It's almostl like Ian McKellen hasn't aged since the first movie. I'll be first in line to see this!
Tony93 - 7/2/2012, 11:21 PM
48 fr/sec?

looks fantastic
legolad - 7/3/2012, 12:29 AM
I hope the break between the two movies happens when Bilbo catches the first glimpse of the Lonely Mountain after they all escape Mirkwood, that seems like a natural breaking point, just like the end of the Fellowship of the Ring movie
brokentoejoe - 7/3/2012, 12:55 AM
OH MY GOD…. this movie comes out on my birthday……….. thank you Jesus (aka peter jackson)
timotey - 7/3/2012, 1:58 AM
I trust Jackson with Tolkien's work the way I trust Moffat&Gatiss with Sherlock - all of them are first and foremost fans of the original and they do their utmost to be as faithful to it as possible while making it accessible to a wider audience.
alekesam - 7/3/2012, 2:08 AM
Man, I can't wait for December!

Django Unchained!! lol...
marvel72 - 7/3/2012, 4:13 AM

Jollem - 7/3/2012, 4:44 AM
i heard it's gonna be a musical :)
Godzillafart - 7/3/2012, 5:57 AM
OMG!!! Gandalf and Gollum look...exactly like they looked in the first three movies.
PeterParker1991 - 7/3/2012, 6:08 AM
^^yes. I'm excited to see Gollum again. I heard Smaug is going to be in Part 2. Remember there's a lot going on in the book. I think after Gollum's cave, Gandalf disappears for a while and returns around the time of the war near the end. This movie is going to be awesome.
Facade - 7/3/2012, 7:03 AM
CANNOT [frick]ing WAIT!!!!
siggisuperman - 7/3/2012, 7:35 AM
#rubbish78 well it happens before the other movies so it would suck if they looked older. Besides that Gandalf is 3000 years old and the elves not much younger so I don't think they will change their appearance much :)
hoodedjester - 7/3/2012, 7:40 AM
Gollum looks even more fantastic! This movie is gonna be great
kingshnake - 7/3/2012, 8:55 AM
I hate James Nesbitt so that is reducing my anticipation levels :(
Zoidberg115 - 7/3/2012, 10:38 AM
I guess the barrels confirm the ending of Bilbo on one of the barrels going down the river, or its been confirmed already and im 2 late
Darkhaven - 7/3/2012, 10:38 AM
This year began (for me) with the Avengers, and ends with the Hobbit. There hasn't been a year as badass as this since sometime in the damn 80's!

Also, holy crap Galadriel.
WorldsGreatestdetective - 7/3/2012, 10:44 AM
Del toro should have done it. Jackson is one of the most overrated directors today. He's lucky the story and excessive details of these book give him a free pass in having to put any input as a director
comicb00kguy - 7/3/2012, 12:10 PM
Still looking forward to seeing Smaug. Enjoyed the trailer they showed before Amazing Spider-Man last night, but I think that was the same one that's been around for a little while.
