Brian Michael Bendis has dominated the Avengers books ever since he "Disassembled" the team in 2004. As this era of the Marvel Universe wraps up with the conclusion of Avengers Vs. X-Men this Fall, the Marvel NOW! relaunch brings with it new titles, looks and creative teams. That includes Jonathan Hickman (Secret Warriors, Fantastic Four taking over two of the core Avengers books; The Avengers and New Avengers. In an interview with Comic Book Resources, the writer has talked revealing (without dropping too many specific details) about his plans for the titles and you can check out some highlights below. Be sure to click on the link at the bottom of the page for more, and sound off with your thoughts in the usual place.

On Leaving Fantastic Four To Take Over Two Of The Core Avengers Books:

I was pretty honored to be asked. Obviously, with everything that's gone on this summer with the movie and the track record [departing "Avengers" writer] Brian Michael Bendis has had over the past, oh, countless number of years, it's a big responsibility, but one I'm pretty excited about. I know what I want to do and everyone seems to be onboard with it. It feels big. It feels ambitious. We're positioning it as the next logical step of the Avengers, which is both pretty interesting and what I think what we should be doing -- figuring out what's next, right? What comes after a billion dollar franchise? There's a whole different level of expectation because 'Avengers' has a certain density and importance to the company that, for various reasons, no other books have. It's a big deal, but I think I'm ready for it.

On His Take On The Avengers And How He Will Handle The 18 Character Roster:

The idea is that the Avengers have to get bigger. That means bigger in every sense. That means the roster has to be bigger, and the missions have to be bigger, and the adversaries and scenarios they find themselves in have to be larger. I've played with this stuff a little bit over in the Ultimate Universe. Obviously, it's a completely different weight class here, but in a lot of ways that's the kind of velocity that the book should have. We (Tom Brevoort and I) also felt like that if the book was going to be about an Avengers world, it should look more like the world. Of course there are complications starting out when the necessary movie characters are five white dudes and a white lady, but, you know, bigger roster. Frankly, I'm really, really excited at how we address that. The lineup is killer. The way I've set this up is we'll do bigger stories where our entire cast or almost all of our cast take part in a really big adventure. We'll do around three-issue arcs of bigger stories, and then we'll do three done-in-one issues where we focus on a smaller group of characters. It's not a problem getting to everyone, and it's not a problem making it feel like everybody's important.

On How He Intends To Use The Various Heroes In The Book:

I think the writers of the 'Thor,' 'Iron Man,' 'Captain America,' etc. should be writing whatever stories they want to write for those characters," Hickman stated. "'Avengers' isn't the place where Thor is going to have a huge character arc. That's not how it works. That stuff happens in 'Thor.' 'Avengers' should be a reflection of that. The book very quickly becomes about all the characters that surround the big guns of the Marvel Universe. Once people see how the issues work, it will become very clear. This isn't about a random group of characters I just decided to put together. This is about a bunch of heroes who feel the same way about the main Avengers as we do. You want to see Thor? So do these guys.

On What We Should Expect From His Other Marvel NOW! Title, New Avengers:

There's one big massive Avengers team that is the Avengers, and there's this other thing that's going on in 'New Avengers.' When we announce exactly what 'New Avengers' is, it will make perfect sense and everybody will like, 'Oh yeah! Of course.' 'Avengers' and 'New Avengers' are the same book -- just from two different sides of the world. Since 'New Avengers' and 'Avengers' are closely related, we've got this kind of super-structure for where we're going down the road. Where I was going to end up was always a fixed point. One of the first things I pitched was where we end up. That's how it works for me. I understand the end point, and I work backwards from there. So the fact that I know where I'm going to be at in issue #63 is not unnatural or odd for the way I do these things. At this point, I have a pretty good idea of what I want to do for the bulk of the 'Avengers' and 'New Avengers' issues, but I'm leaving myself a lot of room to play, for things to grow, for me to fall in love with different characters and let them shine and to just have a really good time. And while I'm very excited about 'Avengers' -- that it's a very strong book, and I don't think I could have started it off any better than the first issue, and I love where it's going -- I think 'New Avengers' is going to be the sleeper hit of the year when people see what it is."

On Working With Artist Jerome Opena:

This is all about giving Jerome a really big push and marking him as one of the top talents in the industry. And while the latter is obviously true, it's always great for a creator when Marvel gets behind you. I think being put on what is arguably the flagship book is a great move for Jerome. He deserves it, and I'm incredibly fortunate to get to work with him. He's fantastic.

Can't wait for his run! He was fantastic on FF!
Scholes60 - 7/25/2012, 3:50 AM
I'm not that familiar with Hickman's work but a while back I did buy a couple of FF comics as I wanted to see the Galactus, Celestials clash.

I thought he handled that quite well and I look forward to seeing more of his work.

As an Aussie sci-fi writer: http://www.amazon.com/Alien-Hunter-Star-Trooper-ebook/dp/B007HYRT6K/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1331248758&sr=1-1 I’ve written a solid collection of Marvel (espec Thor) fan fiction, why not check it out? http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1276881/David_Scholes

His and Humphries' work on Ultimates has been pretty good.

Just not the biggest fan of that new Cyclops suit.

I'm pretty excited for this. Two great writers (Hickman and Remender) are shaping the Avengers universe. It'll damn near break me but I'm gonna try to pull all the upcoming Avengers titles.
ATrueHero1987 - 7/25/2012, 7:19 AM
Avengers + Hickman=HELL YES
ATrueHero1987 - 7/25/2012, 7:20 AM
@whathappenednolan Bendis said that's not Cyclops.
Gutts81 - 7/25/2012, 7:32 AM
Well looks like I'm done with buying comics in my adult life now. I loved all the history that has come over the last ten years with marvel comics. Now all that is about to go down the [frick]ing drain because Marvel thinks a "rebooted" universe is cool by way of DC new52.
MDHENDRICKS - 7/25/2012, 7:42 AM
Hey Gutts81 it's not a reboot everyone's history is intact. Everything that has happened in the last 10 still happened and everything since Marvel has been around a still happened.
thetrojan - 7/25/2012, 8:31 AM
i just read the collected avengers with artwork by john romita jr ,and it felt odd,
spiderman even said, and I am not kidding,"with great power comes great responsibility".
it was the illuminati versus the hood revealed to the rest of the almost fifty avengers.(okay I am exaggerating)and a shitty adventure with the infinity jewels for the gauntlet.

I did not like it one bit,(every second panel was lovely to look at)it seemed as if Marvel were just reinforcing the characters....

Not for adults.
time to leave it for the kids.
BruceLeroy - 7/25/2012, 8:35 AM
Lol at the negativity. You'd think having a quality writer on the Avengers after Bendis would get some people excited. Guess not.

The Avengers will be the best it's been in a long time. No doubt about it. Hickman knows what the hell he's doing. He managed to make the Fantastic Four more relevant than they've been in years. It will also be one of the more popular comics on the stands. Book it.

Spidey31 - 7/25/2012, 8:54 AM
Is there gonna be a spiderman reboot?
GLprime2814 - 7/25/2012, 9:02 AM
Call it what you will its till sounds like a reboot, and if irpt is just be a good one.
Dedpool - 7/25/2012, 9:20 AM
Well sounds good. I think finally tieing all the Avengers books together will work, and the X-Books will have some unity again with characters being on both sides. I really think there should be some non-mutants (but ones who have close ties to the X-men and mutants) on the X-men. Spiderman, Namor, and some others come to mind.
SteveRogersSon - 7/25/2012, 9:35 AM
Well I for one am interested to see how this "new" newer world is going to be after AVX...

As for the costumes..you all know my stance on the Cap Costume...Classics are Classics for a reason (Classic Coke vs. New Coke...CLASSIC ALWAYS WINS!) Bring back the classic Cap uniform...

I dont' think this will be as gimmicky as some may think..but I've been wrong before.
JohnnyKrypton - 7/25/2012, 9:38 AM

"Lol at the negativity. You'd think having a quality writer on the Avengers after Bendis would get some people excited. Guess not."

That presupposes that everyone thinks Hickman is a good writer...I don't.
AlcoholicA - 7/25/2012, 10:08 AM
Anyone who doubts Hickman, read his run on Fantastic Four/FF from the building of the building of the Bridge to the Cities and Galactus' fight with the Celestials.
elcaballerooscuro92 - 7/25/2012, 10:12 AM
why is hulk wearing an armor he doesn't need one
ralfinader - 7/25/2012, 10:48 AM
I get why people who don't like Marvel are calling this a reboot like the New52, even though it is nothing like that retarded move DC made.

I don't get why people who claim to be Marvel fans like Gutts81, for instance, are unaware this is just a retitling, renumbering gig that does nothing to the history established since they began making Comics at Marvel. Either they lack serious reading skills, and need some pictures and word bubbles to tell them whats up, or they are lying about being Marvel fans.
Darkhaven - 7/25/2012, 11:06 AM
Hulk may be wearing armor for purely aesthetic reasons :) He's just tired of having to buy the same purple Fubu pants every twenty minutes when he flips out!
WakeUp - 7/25/2012, 11:14 AM
Did anyone read this? Or did everyone just scroll to the bottom and yell "I hate Reboot". It's not a reboot...it's nothing like a reboot, seriously it's a new writer taking over, the rosters will shuffle around due to the AvX event, but no history is being erased, it's actually moving the series forward.
Mucklefluga - 7/25/2012, 11:31 AM
Most if not all the new costume designs look pretty bad tbh but i think the story and art will be awesome none the less
mikesinuman - 7/25/2012, 11:49 AM
ROCKET RACOON!
coopshep39 - 7/25/2012, 12:00 PM

Moakynubs - 7/25/2012, 12:04 PM
Sounds cool. Marvel is gonna have me trying some new books.
breakUbatman - 7/25/2012, 12:34 PM
Opena! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!

Love his art
oldnoname - 7/25/2012, 8:26 PM
I still HATE Cyclops costume and think it's funny how Wolverine always looks essentially the same.

PS: I actually barely understand what this is. It is like a reboot (hard or soft), or just some renumbering and renaming with lineup changes? I wanted to make sure I understood before making any judgements.
