BOX OFFICE: THE EXPENDABLES 2 Takes #1; THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Passes $400M Domestically

As predicted, The Expendables 2 is set to take the #1 spot at the North American box office this weekend, while The Bourne Legacy should hold on to #2 despite new releases like animated feature Paranorman. We also have an update on The Dark knight Rises.

Deadline reports that with an 'A-' CinemaScore, The Expendables 2 earned $11.5 million yesterday, putting it on course for a $30 million weekend and the #1 spot. Back in 2010, The Expendables made $34 million during its opening weekend. Despite new releases like Paranorman and Sparkle (Whitney Houston's final film before her death), The Bourne Legacy is set to be pushed down to only #2 after it made $5.4 million yesterday and a predicted $17.2 million for the weekend. Meanwhile, The Dark Knight Rises has now passed the $400 million mark domestically after taking $3.1 million yesterday and around $10.4 million for the weekend (giving it a total of $409.2 million). The past few weeks at the North American box office have been very unpredictable, so we'll be sure to bring you the final figures either tomorrow or Monday. I'll probably catch Paranorman too
beane2099 - 8/18/2012, 5:56 AM
Saw it yesterday. Expendables 2 is worth seeing for the Chuck Norris scenes alone. Hilarious.
Linta - 8/18/2012, 6:10 AM
plan on seeing Expendables 2.
Ceejay - 8/18/2012, 6:17 AM
Last week the headline was all about The Bourne Legacy having a poor opening prediction of $45 million.

This week The Expendables 2 has a $30 million prediction but the headline is cool with that, even though its lower than the opening for the original?

I thought reporting was supposed to be impartial to personal opinions? Bourne was up against the final three days of the Olympics for its weekend, what's the Expendables 2's excuse?
Nomis1800 - 8/18/2012, 6:18 AM

I tell you now I'm getting the torrent today and the Blu Ray on the 29th.

It's still going to top the Blu-Ray/DVD charts like TDK in '08
SUPERSHADOWBAT - 8/18/2012, 7:08 AM

Saw Expendables 2 last night. Kicked so much ass. I also watched Raid: Redemption. That movie is in a league of its own.
thewonderer - 8/18/2012, 7:19 AM
@breakUbatman

Who mentioned TDK?

Anyway, I'm just saying that this film deserves a dvd purchase for sure, but if you can't wait, I'm not personally condoning it, but go ahead and indulge
TheDetectiveComicRises - 8/18/2012, 7:31 AM

Movies released after about mid-August traditionally aren't expected to make serious cash or hit blockbuster status until the Thanksgiving / Christmas holidays swing around.
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 8/18/2012, 8:14 AM
I'm seeing Rises in IMAX this weekend with my cousin.

I wouldn't download Avengers nor would I take it even if it was free.

POS.
SageMode - 8/18/2012, 9:54 AM
NOLANITE

Too bad that POS has broken 25 BO records, and all around is more critically, financially, and commercially successful than any of your precious Nolan films.

LOL

LAXtremest - 8/18/2012, 10:19 AM
Why is this breaking down into another fan war? Isn't this article kind of about The Expendables?
GiantNerd0720 - 8/18/2012, 10:21 AM
@LAXtremest

My bad, it's entertaining to me sometimes. I could pretty much care less about who likes what better at this point.
