By Josh Wilding - 10/17/2012
In SUPERMAN #13, the Man of Steel finds himself testing his strength on machines under the direction of Dr. Veritas, a beautiful woman who designed the instruments gauging Superman’s abilities. These machines are so powerful, in fact, that Superman feels exhausted and actually begins to perspire for the first time since he can remember. But does the fact that him and Dr. Vertias have known each other for a while mean that they can trust one another? After all, why is she collecting all this data on Superman in the first place?

Cool. I'm liking the art.
OdinsBeard - 10/17/2012, 8:28 AM
that's art befitting the father of all super heroes.
DatScarletPimPerNeLL - 10/17/2012, 8:29 AM
Really love the art from Rocafort.
newmutants - 10/17/2012, 8:29 AM
art is A++++
Darth258 - 10/17/2012, 8:35 AM
Great art.
GUNSMITH - 10/17/2012, 8:39 AM
THEY'RE DRAWING HIM LIKE CAVIL, HE LOOKS LIKE HIM.
Fastestmanalive - 10/17/2012, 8:55 AM
Not too crazy about the art, but I'm hoping Lobdel finally gives the greatest superhero the treatment he deserves, third times the charm.
cabbie655 - 10/17/2012, 8:55 AM
Looks good. I buy both titles: Superman and Action Comics. Hoping this run takes flight.
GoILL - 10/17/2012, 8:58 AM
Love the art haven't read a Superman book in a while though.
DukeAcureds - 10/17/2012, 9:00 AM
This creative team is awesome. I just hope this doesn't mean that they are both leaving Red Hood and the Outlaws, because they were doing a really good job of building that series into a giant operatic epic.
If they have left, then it's just the latest in a string of DC Corporate cock-ups. But I may just have to jump ship with them and pick up Superman. That zero issue they did was good.
Rocafort is seriously awesome. He's a lot like Turner but with a bit of Silvestri. And some of his more pschadelic storytelling techniques remind me of old-skool Gerorge Perez. Seriously good stuff.
ACira - 10/17/2012, 9:03 AM
That's the nicest art Superman has had in quite a while. What's with the 'S' shield on his chest when not in costume now though? Please don't tell me he has some stupid costume gimmick like Flash's dumb costume ring?
evyllsummer - 10/17/2012, 9:06 AM
Rocafort's art is fantastic, but I hate Lobdell's writing with the fire of 10,000 exploding suns, so, pass...
MutantEquality - 10/17/2012, 9:09 AM
Ok yeah, the art is great and testing his upper limits is cool but...wow does he Overpowered and Naive. So he has been benching the weight of the world for 5 days and we only get one drop of sweat and right away he goes and charges back up? No wonder it's hard for anyone to write a decent story for the guy. How can anyone touch that? As for the "someone has to pay the bills" and "wish i could make saving the world my day job," ummmm just go xray the ocean and get a free and clear treasure chest like Aquaman to fill your pockets. Can't wait for the next Writer/Artist combo.
dnno1 - 10/17/2012, 9:14 AM
So the New 52 Superman is definitely strong enough to move a planet by himself with ease (if he had a proper support to lift it).
PsyBoy - 10/17/2012, 9:19 AM
Great art. Such an upgrade.
ellispart3 - 10/17/2012, 9:25 AM
i've been away from superman comics a bit too long it seems. are we looking at almost silver age-esque strength level again? Bench pressing the Earth for 5 days and flying from the sun and back in seconds (it would seem). I need to catch up on my Superman runs.
xstryker - 10/17/2012, 9:27 AM
He could pay his rent by carrying a cargo ship directly from point a to point b once a year.
jimpinto24 - 10/17/2012, 9:28 AM
Great art! I love Superman. This should be a good read.
dnno1 - 10/17/2012, 9:30 AM
@ellispart3 - bench pressing the equivalent weight of the Earth for 5 days straight without sunlight to recharge himself -- and then just barely breaking a sweat afterwards.
RobertKent - 10/17/2012, 9:31 AM
Don't like the fact that he can hold earth's weight for 5 days, I don't enjoy a too powerfull superman, Hope she's mean and make him blieve that was the weight he was lifting. Love the art I can picture Cavill in here but I hate the S on superman's body can't they give him a couple of wrist bands that can make the suit or something else seriously, although overall the flaws still looking forward to this !
ellispart3 - 10/17/2012, 9:33 AM
@dnno1
right. that's what i'm saying, it looks like they are bringing back the days of god-mode superman. if done well, then cool. but his books were sometimes stale because he couldn't be defeated by any enemy and he knew it.
AnungUnRama - 10/17/2012, 9:40 AM
Why is He-Man in the second pic?
MartianSupermanhunter22 - 10/17/2012, 9:49 AM
Hopefully we wont have bitch Supes anymore. I'm stoked on his power up.
8thDynasty - 10/17/2012, 9:56 AM
These guys were such a great team on Red Hood and The Outlaws and I'm really sad to see them get pulled for such a lame character like Superman.
DatScarletPimPerNeLL - 10/17/2012, 10:28 AM
@ Nomis, YES INDEED MY FRIEND! THOUGHT BALLOONS FTW! =-)
NorrinRaddical - 10/17/2012, 10:30 AM
love Rocafort
WruceBayne - 10/17/2012, 10:33 AM
Who poses a threat to someone who can continuesly bench press the earth for five days? He's to powerful and that makes it a bad reading experience. And from now on I shouldn't EVER see him struggling to pick up a building or catch an airplane.
MutantEquality - 10/17/2012, 10:34 AM
I think the problem I have with the power up is you lose anything you can relate to. He may have grown up as a human but when you can move the moon (or earth @Nomis) how can you still feel anything like one? How can you empathize with others when it took five days of benching the weight of the earth to even get 1 drop of sweat? How can you understand their struggles? How can you not start to feel like Dr. Manhattan?
Different strokes for different folks and that is fine. The main reason I read these stories is to see an invidual or group of individuals struggle at all cost to beat evil, even to the death. It doesn't seem he is capable of struggle anymore on human terms. So unless you are fighting GOD's every wednesday, you don't really need him and he won't really need you. By the looks of it, Superman could race around the earth, stop every crime, every bad guy (super or not), build every building and destroy everybomb....without ever breaking a sweat. Which kinda defeats the purpose of every others characters drive to do well...anything. Again, it's just an opinion.
Theunderdog - 10/17/2012, 10:37 AM
The art is so fine I loved it yeah I agree he kind look like henry cavill maybe they are trying to implant well the idea of cavill as superman
Ancar - 10/17/2012, 10:56 AM
Great, finally a good artist on the series!!! Now DC has to put Ben Oliver on Action Comics and everuthing will be alright with the man of steel!!!
MidNightWind - 10/17/2012, 10:59 AM
I don't get it, how powerful do people want superman to be? do you want him to be like powerful but not invincible or powerful as in no one can beat him no matter how hard you hit him? plus I can see the Man of Steel movie is having some influence on the comics by the title of the issue.
Tony93 - 10/17/2012, 11:30 AM
Sweet
Tony93 - 10/17/2012, 11:34 AM
Wow I cannot wait for MAN OF STEEL
SUPERSHADOWBAT - 10/17/2012, 12:42 PM
I'm glad Superman has silver age power levels again. Now the writers have to come up with better stories and more powerful villains. It seems also from this preview that he's thoughtful of his words and actions.
One of the main reasons Superman has been popular over the years is that even being someone with god like powers, he was raised to be humble and compassionate. The opposite of absolute power corrupts absolutely. That's what makes Superman the greatest of superheros.
I love the art of Rocafort and hopefully Lobdell will give us Superman stories to remember.
boiling - 10/17/2012, 12:48 PM
Rocafort Rules! Loved his art in Red Hood, a shame that he left, RH lost so much quality. But glad to see him giving Superman a shape up - he sure needs that.
RSDhillon - 10/17/2012, 12:56 PM
Damn, wish the sun was colored white.
RSDhillon - 10/17/2012, 1:02 PM
Also, loving the thought bubbles!
RobertKent - 10/17/2012, 1:11 PM
Hey can someone clear this out for me why does superman's got a scar on his left shoulder?
OdinsBeard - 10/17/2012, 1:14 PM
MutantEquality@ i like your opinions. i guess the only way to really think about superman is compare him to Dr Manhattan. the only difference is Dr started human and maintains some of his human personality traits. but you just have to dig deep into the mentality of a "god" - which superman really is if you think about it. i think a lot of writers get it backwards. don't treat him as if he's a human because he grew up on a farm. this guy is absolutely NOT human and everything he thinks and says should reflect that. ya know like - "im a god, i don't understand or relate to you at all. but i want to and i want to do good in the world."
PsyBoy - 10/17/2012, 2:22 PM
He looks literally identical to Henry Cavill
rbfn04 - 10/17/2012, 2:41 PM
@MutantEquality that's where him BEING Clark comes in. But, since they said they'd take the other direction with this, gues the whole "I AM Clark, SUperman is what I DO" gos out the window
rbfn04 - 10/17/2012, 2:43 PM
@OdinsBeard again, let's say you were born in Brazil but, as a toddler, moved to America. You'd think and feel as an american, not brazilian. Same thing with Supes.

He never been to Krypton. He was born there, but moved to Earth as a toddler and was raised by two strong, loving figures who thaught him to be who he is.
GUNGRAVE1 - 10/17/2012, 3:10 PM
Art is very good.
johnnymarr - 10/17/2012, 4:01 PM
nice art / mediocre writer
oldnoname - 10/17/2012, 4:56 PM
I'm interested. So superman is officially hella strong again right?

Good
dnno1 - 10/18/2012, 3:01 AM
Some of you are bellyaching about Superman being overpowered, but say nothing about the Hulk. If you noticed, the New 52 Superman is coming with villians who are just as powerful (like Hellspoint), so this will be interesting.
Berean - 10/18/2012, 6:03 AM
@Mutant Equality. Superman's powers are often a point of criticism but your understanding of him is limited. Having nearly unlimited power does not recuse one from struggles. One of his struggles is to NOT become like Dr. Manhattan. A wise man once said, "It isn't adversity that tests character, but success." As far as your other observation, no he could not stop all crime. One has to be aware of crime before one can stop it. He is not omniscient. You, like others, are creating a caricature of a comic. Finally, we cannot forget kryptonite and other super powered beings who neutralize Superman.
rbfn04 - 10/18/2012, 7:05 AM
@dnno1 so, DC come up with a bunch of new age Doomsday, bi deal. DCU already had a lot of dudes that gave Superman problems.

@Berean you forgot about magic too. But, yeah, it's important to remind people that there are other super powered being in the DCnU
MutantEquality - 10/18/2012, 6:58 PM
@Berean
My understanding may be limited but your imagination on what the level of these powers mean might be limited.

He doesn't have to be omniscient. If he has this kinda strength one can only assume the rest of his powers are on the same level. He can hear, fly or run anywhere in seconds.Imagine hearing every police scanner, news feed and voice on the planet. He hears a cry for help and in seconds he races there to save the day all while listening for the next disaster. Takes seconds to save the day and immedietly on to the next problem. Rinse and repeat. Imagine a superhero says, "We have to find BLANK before it's too late." He hears this from half way around the world, spends a few seconds scanning the earth with his xray and shows up with the guy before anyone even starts the search? Really? Come on.
It kinda makes things like partnering up with a guy like Batman ridiculous don't you think? It's more like a God playing with a child wanting to be a detective instead of partnering up with someone you respect for a common goal.

As for Kryptonite, it never kills him but only slows him down. Slowing down someone this strong isn't saying much.

Yeah they are making guys to fight him but unless they do that every wednesday, fighting everyday criminals will be just ridiculous.

Since he obviously cannot exert himself anymore in anything really, how can you empathize with any struggle? Yes he WAS Clark and he WAS raised by humans but those all turn into a distant memory after time. Success means little if it took little to accomplish it.

Superman's problem has always been relatability and no one not no one can relate to someone like this. Might work for a couple of issues but it seems like we will just end up with another "Superman walk the earth to relate to people" storyline again. Works for you cool. Not for me IMHO.
ellispart3 - 10/19/2012, 10:13 AM
@dnno1
i can understand belly aching because a lazy writer could more easily do a story with "a brand new stronger threat" and really feel stale. I don't have an issue with the strength level, and as far as the hulk, he's a time bomb of ungodly strength which is a bit different than a big boy scout.

@MutantEquality
as far as the stopping all crime thing, no one can be in multiple places at once. reminds me of the captain marvel run a few years back where he had to choose between two crimes, one being a simple mugging, the other being a galactic war, but he could only stop one. he stops the war, but with his cosmic awareness he sees that by saving the lady from the mugger he would of helped usher in a new messiah that would of brought peace throughout the universe. long story short, drove him crazy. superman (sans the cosmic awareness) would have the same issues, he would have to choose, have to place more value on one life over another and it would eat at him.

just because he is super powered to this extreme doesn't mean you can't relate to the character. yes there will be a few "superman walk the earth to relate to people" storylines, but every character has a trope they fall back on to help mold the character. how many "losing my mind and grip on who i am" batman stories have we read? how many "woe is me and my life sucks" spider-man stories have we read? how many "no one likes us and we're fighting an uphill battle" x-men stories are there? it takes a decent writer to find more toothpaste in those tubes and make it work.

we all love seeing superman take on foes, and tossing in a new big bad (ala doomsday) will also happen quite often, but also giving him cerebral villains that make him question his moral code exist (ala luthor).

superman's power level has fluctuated throughout the years and in every era, someone has figured out how to make him last for another 10 or so years and he changes a bit again.
