Deadline report that Fox and DC Comics are moving ahead on an adaptation of The Spectre. Here is an excerpt from their report with all of the relevant details. In case you didn't already know, The Spectre is a supernatural being of nigh-unlimited might whose mission on Earth is to bring the wrath of God upon evil men. He is bound to a human host (a soul of a dead man) with Crispus Allen being its current incarnation.

Fox has bought The Spectre, a drama series project based on the DC Comics superhero character co-created by Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel and Bernard Baily. Brandon Camp (John Doe) will write the adaptation and executive produce with feature producer Bill Gerber (Gran Torino). The Spectre, which has received a script commitment, centers on a former cop serving time in afterlife limbo who hunts down earthly criminals on behalf of the dead — and mortals soon to be dead, if ultimate justice is not served. DC Entertainment’s sister TV studio Warner Bros. TV will produce with Gerber Pictures. The Spectre character first appeared in an 1940 issue of DC’s More Fun Comics. Since then, he has been featured in a number of other DC titles and has headlined his own comic book series. Camp was introduced to The Spectre property by DC Comics’ chief creative officer Geoff Johns.

What do you guys make of this? The last show Fox developed for DC was Human Target, and while it gained a fairly devoted fan base, it was ultimately cancelled. So, what about The Spectre? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place!

Didn't know other companies/studio's could buy rights to DC characters I thought Time Warners hold the rights to everything. Wouldn't be better suited for that little channle under Time Warners control HBO. Then again I don't know much about spectre, but the impression I got from the Spectre animated short was that it was a pretty dark type of character. Any ways its gonna get cancelled after a season or two it is fox after all

Between Fox and Warner Bros...both suck. Warner Bros have [frick]ed most DC films and [frick]ed Smallville.

Fox...well they screw up everything.

Despite both companies sucking, I hope the show does well at least.

YES YES YES! explore his biblical aspects and Phantom Stranger (Wandering Jew) as a guide. Make it like Legion and Law and Order.

SHould be a WB show though. One part Cop drama, one part Supernatural. The "Showcase SHort" on "Crisis on Two Earths" was absolutely awesome. Something like that with the noir detective feel, and the sci-fi slant would work perfectly.
@Nomis- Completely forgot about that (though I loved the show) and if they take this as seriously as that then this could rock.

@MaddMonkk- Nice point there. The show could have a measure of depth that is lacking in other DC live-action shows that have aired...though not many.

@grif- Agreed man. If the budget is small I really hope they don't go cheap to the extent that Smallville did.

This would be awesome if it had a noir-ish feel to it......like the short animated film.

@LP4, well Fox put up $4M an episode for Terra Nova and because they have to purchase the rights to the songs they use, Glee costs over $3M per episode. So we know they're not shy about spending money on a series. It certainly won't have a Smallville budget.

Crispus Allen...pass.

A crime drama meets supernatural series could really strike with audiences. For the longest time I thought Spectre would be great on television.

@MaddMonkk

Love to see the Stranger, but the Wandering Jew story might be a stretch since it is dependent on strictly Christian beliefs...that's only one of his possible origins, though (Moore's 'fallen angel' version has been used and expanded several times in-continuity) so there's plenty of room to play around.

@ROMACK- Yep like i said- WB and Fox are both screw ups. I agree...this does have fail written all over it.

@tazmaniak- Oh ok, i had no idea what Fox's funds were. If they can put in enough money the show might just not suck so bad. We'll see.

Cool. Fox did a good job with The Human Target so this may be good. It will probably be the original version from the 40's that wasn't as powerful so they can save on sfx.
