Guardians of the Galaxy is a comic book title featuring an intergalactic superhero team that included a plant and a raccoon. Marvel Studios rolled the dice on the rather obscure property and James Gunn's film became the breakout hit of the summer. Now it seems that Warner Bros. wants to get in on the action too with their own superhero team set in space.
"According to sources, Warners is quietly sending out the DC comic book Legion Of Superheroes to screenwriters & their reps for takes. For non-industry folks, what that means is that screenwriters check out the comic book and come up for a movie idea involving the characters from that comic. Those writers then go to the studio to pitch their idea. The studio then hires the screenwriter they feel has the best idea or take for the film." - El Mayimbe

Could a Legion Of Superheroes movie be one of the nine release dates Warner Bros. just announced last month? El Mayimbe isn't sure. If it is, and we minus the two films labelled "Event" that would leave us with these choices: 8/5/16, 6/23/17, 11/17/17, 3/23/18, 7/27/18, 4/5/19, 6/14/19, 4/3/20 or 6/19/20.

Comic book writer Otto Binder and artist Al Plastino created the Legion of Superheroes. They first appeared in Adventure Comics #247 (April 1958). At that time, Adventure Comics featured stories about Superboy and their issue was just supposed to be a one-off. The  Legion of Superheroes were a 30th century superhero club inspired by Superboy. The three founding members Lightning Lad, Saturn Girl, and Cosmic Boy travel back in time to meet and recruit Superboy. Comic book fans enjoyed them so much that based on the demand the characters made another guest appearance the following year. By 1962, they became a regular addition to Adventure Comics. Part of what makes them interesting is that they would rotate the role of leadership and they had a rule in which each member had to have at least one unique superpower that other members didn't possess. The group has been revamped several times over the decades. Some other notable members of the Legion of Superheroes include: Brainiac 5, Ultra Boy, Wildfire, Timber Wolf, Colossal Boy, Karate Kid, Chameleon Boy, and Matter-Eater Lad.
The Legion of Super-Heroes is a 30th Century inter-galactic team of super-powered young adults. Inspired by the legend of Superboy, they were founded by Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl under the funding of an eccentric millionaire they had saved named R.J. Brande. This cast expands to include dozens of members with a diverse array of powers and personalities. There have been several versions of the team in main continuity because of the constantly changing nature of the future, including the Reboot Legion and the Prime Legion. The Legion of Super-Heroes were created by Otto Binder and Al Plastino, first appearing in Adventure Comics #247. (1958) Mark Waid, Tom McCraw and Stuart Immonen engineered a reboot of the team following Zero Hour in Legion of Super-Heroes (Volume 4) #0. (1994) There was another reboot of the team by Mark Waid and Barry Kitson, starting in Teen Titans/Legion Special #1. (2004) - DC Wiki
