Is This What Smaug Will Look Like In THE HOBBIT?

In Peter Jackson's second video blog for The Hobbit the crew can been seen wearing a “200 Days To Go” sweatshirt. On the shirt is a design of what appears to be the dragon, Smaug.

As with most dragons, Smaug's scaly hide is nigh invulnerable, yet his softer underside is more vulnerable to attack. However, centuries spent sleeping atop his gold hoard has caused gold and gemstones to become embedded in his flesh, creating essentially an impenetrable armour. - wikipedia

The image above does happen to look a lot like a John Howe design for Smaug. You can compare with the image above, and the one John created below. So what do you think? Is this what Smaug will look like in The Hobbit?

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is due out on December 14, 2012, with The Hobbit: There and Back Again arriving a year later, on December 13, 2013.

The Hobbit is an upcoming two-part epic fantasy film directed by Peter Jackson. It is a film adaptation of the 1937 novel of the same name by J. R. R. Tolkien and prequel to The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Jackson, director of The Lord of the Rings, returns as director of the film and also serves as producer and co-writer. The film will star Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins and Richard Armitage, known for playing Lucas North in the BBC drama series Spooks, as Thorin Oakenshield. Several actors from Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy will reprise their roles, including Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett, Christopher Lee, Ian Holm, Elijah Wood, and Orlando Bloom. Additionally, composer Howard Shore, who wrote the score for The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, has confirmed his role in both parts of the film project. The two parts, entitled The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again, are being filmed back to back and are currently in production in New Zealand; principal photography began on March 21, 2011. They are scheduled to be released on December 14, 2012 and December 13, 2013, respectively.

Maybe he'll look like the dragon from Merlin.

I bet Smaug will be of Del Toro's design, and he said that the movie version would be based on the Howe design a long while ago.

Can't think of a word to describe how amazing Smaug is going to look. Be right back...

I actually thought it would be cool if they made the dragon appear to be part of the mountain and when he wakes up. He takes to the sky and basically flies off with what everyone believes to be a massive rock formation as skin

Seeing that Howe and his designs were a huge part of the LOTR movies, I would take a guess that Smaug will look very similar to his other drawings of him. I have faith in Jackson and his team that we're gonna get 2 fantastic movies

YAY!!!

These two movies are going to be exhilarating for me. I can easily say that these are going to be my favorite movies of all time.

Seen the preview of this movie and it is looking pretty good.

Not big on LOTR, but The Hobbit interest me. Maybe cause I'm a sucker for stories with a dragon as the central antagonist (except SyFy movies, ugh). Smaug looks awesome.

The greatest looking dragon on film to date is Virmithrax from the Dragon Slayer, if Smaug can come close to that, or surpass it, I will be extremely happy.

so pumped for this movie!!!!!

In LOTR the "fair" designs (elves, for example) are based on Alan Lee's art.

The "evil" designs (isengard, mordor, uruk hai, orcs, goblins, balrog) were based in John Howe's art.

If it follows the same rules, it will be like that design.

AND (and I think that's kinda conclusive), the firework dragon that appears in FoTR is also based in this design.

So I think it's pretty safe to assume we'll see this kind of dragon design in The Hobbit.

Will be a any normal dragon.
shaddowkhan - 4/2/2012, 9:51 AM
I think andy dick would have made a good dwarf if he could play the role straight
AlexDeLarge87 - 4/2/2012, 10:41 AM
Thats pretty cool.

I really hope they make Smaug scary.

Vermithrax from Dragonslayer is great example of scary dragon.
xfan320 - 4/2/2012, 10:44 AM
@monkeyballz-- LOL, yea typin is a lil aggravatin on the phone.

I meant like Smaug had been laid down on top of the Lonely Mountain for so long that his hide had become part of the rockface.

One of those 'hiding in plain sight' things
Ceejay - 4/2/2012, 3:14 PM
The dragon from Dragonslayer was outstanding for its time!
GrayMatter - 4/2/2012, 3:46 PM
@xfan320 - I get what you're saying, and in general that is kind of a cool idea, but there's no way that's how it's gonna happen in The Hobbit unless they decide to change things from the book drastically.

The Lonely Mountain is supposed to be a nigh-impregnable dwarven fortress that Smaug is practically hidden away in deep inside. This also comes into play just prior to the Battle of Five Armies when the Men show up wanting money. So I doubt they'd change the geography that much just to have one cool sequence where Smaug takes off and it turns out he and his scales were part of the mountain.

I hope...

Too...much...awesome...

The ONLY problem I'm having with these movies is this: What is the cost gonna be when I buy the Super Delux Hobbit and LOTR MASTER DIRECTORS VOLUME Edition...lol LOTR were by far some of my favorite movies of all time! My heart will just have to make room for these as well!
