BATMAN Director Christopher Nolan Sues Talent Agencies

Chris Nolan, his wife Emma Thomas, and their production company Syncopy filed suit Thursday against Creative Artists Agency (CAA) and William Morris Endeavor (WME) to determine who should receive commissions.

This isn't a matter of not paying commissions, this a matter of figuring out which agency to pay. Nolan and his wife/producer Emma Thomas are seeking legal help as they are caught in the middle of a dispute between their former agency CAA and their current agency WME.

So what happened? Nolan's long-time agent, Dan Aloni, was fired from CAA in February. At that point Aloni went to work at WME, bringing along with him many of his high-profile clients like Christopher Nolan. Things got sticky when The Dark Knight Rises premiered and the tragic events in Aurora, CO. took place at a midnight screening. During that tragedy Nolan's new agency discussed strategies, which means WME would like to be compensated for those services. With The Dark Knight Rises raking in $433 million domestically and $574 million at the international box office that could be a big payday for WME.

While CAA disputes WME's claims Nolan and Emma Thomas are suing the two sides as a defensive measure to protect themselves and their company. In the end they are hoping the court system can help them figure out which side to pay the commission(s) to going forward.

Christopher Nolan at the 2003 MTV Movie AwardsDeadline has some additional information:
My sources estimate the money at stake from Nolan’s deals between October 2005 and February 2012 (and possibly well into the future on these movies) is 10% commission on a minimum of $250 million. And include Nolan’s involvement with Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises as well as Inception and Man of Steel and its hoped-for sequels, and perhaps even projects not yet made public. - Deadline

The Dark Knight Rises is now playing at your local theater. The film stars Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth, Gary Oldman as Jim Gordon, Tom Hardy as Bane, Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake and Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate.

How does that make Nolan a douche? Logically?
bhorwith22 - 9/7/2012, 3:00 AM
inb4 Nolan haters.
bhorwith22 - 9/7/2012, 3:01 AM
Seiously. Whats the big deal? There is a little misunderstanding about how some money was spent. People always blow things like this out of proportion.
TurtlesRAwesome - 9/7/2012, 3:04 AM
Looks like Nolan is due 10% of a figure and they've set a minimum number for that figure to be based upon. The suit involves the fact that caa is due commissions on projects that result from deals they've negotiated years ago (ie the ones mentioned). But now, because of the shooting, wm had to advise strategy on those same projects thus double commissions being due. Nolan will need to pay both unless he has the juice to get his current agency to defer charges to keep him happy.

@ Unas

It doesn't logically. Nolan's done nothing that would class him as a "douche'. People just like to hate with no reasoning.

ummm he isn't whining about money, he just making sure he pays the right agency so that he doesn't get sued by the other. the actions he is taking are defensive to protect himself and his company. How are you missing the point of that?

nailbiter111 - 9/7/2012, 4:01 AM
the thought that people on CBM would knock one of, if not the best director of our lifetime, who happened to lend his talents to a comic book franchise is mind boggling.
Charlie2094 - 9/7/2012, 4:03 AM
@RagingVen0M @Jollem @ WolverinesZombie

Did any of you guys read/understand the article? He's trying to pay money to the right agency whilst also ensuring his company remains safe, being caught in the middle. Nolan and his Wife are completely willing to pay the money to whomever it is owed, they just don't know who that is.

The level of reading comprehension on this astounds me sometimes.
Charlie2094 - 9/7/2012, 4:10 AM
@ nailbiter111

Agreed. I really don't understand where all this hate for Nolan comes from - admittedly though, it's only really people on here, the majority of people love his Batman films, just look at how highly ranked in the imdb top 250 they are. I also believe all his films are near the top too.

Some say he's made Batman different to the comics, but really, there've been so many different takes on him (from full on fantastical, to super dark, real and gritty, with cheesy somewhere between) it's almost impossible to not be faithful. I see it as though he's taken the best villains, story arcs, his origin and retirement, and linked them all together in a brilliant standalone trilogy.

Either you commented without reading the article, or you read the article but didn't understand it. I don't know what makes you dumber.
nailbiter111 - 9/7/2012, 4:19 AM
Charlie2094 - I think most people that trash Nolan just don't understand what a great movie is and what a bad movie is. Probably the same people that think Transformers or Pirates of the whatever are the bomb diggity. Same type of people that probably have never seen Godfather 1 or 2, but still think they know what a masterpiece looks like.

@ Jollem

Ah yes I see, sorry about that. Was merely scrolling down and "taking names" and saw your picture :P

@nailbiter111

Yeah I guess so, some of the "reasons" I've heard people give for not liking are very petty, silly things. I completely understand if someone doesn't like a movie, no ones going to like everything, but it generally sounds as though they decide not to like it, and THEN make up reasons for why not. One of my friends hates Rises because there was "no way Bruce could've made it back from the prison". It's like he needs to be shown everything, we don't need an extra 30 minutes showing him go from village to village, travelling on board a fishing boat to here etc etc, you just accept it.
Zordan - 9/7/2012, 5:21 AM

TheDetectiveComicRises - 9/7/2012, 5:34 AM
@nailbiter111 well said & I agree
@Charlie2094 well said also.

It is sad how people hate on him and not know him. I love the job Nolan has done for not only for Batman but comics all over. Many people have been so hating since 2008 when The Dark Knight became the top grossing CBM of all time at the time. People should read the article in it's entirety before making comments that are not true. Every Batman that has been ever done is Batman there have been many different takes on the character. People needs to realize Batman does not belong to them selfishly Batman belongs to us all.

Nolan introduced a Batman for all seasons for the Die Hard Comic Book fans, people who just like movies, entertainment and even people who like Academy Awards.

Some people need to learn about film making because Batman is not just for the Comic Book community he is for the whole world to see.

@Grif we all know how U feel about Nolan & his take on Batman so there you have your attention but not attention from us permanently so stop going on every Batman page especially about Nolan take on the character because U must like something about it if U on every page & seen all 3 movies. Now I'm done with U & now we will all enjoy The Batman Legacy ;)

"ummm he isn't whining about money, he just making sure he pays the right agency so that he doesn't get sued by the other. the actions he is taking are defensive to protect himself and his company. How are you missing the point of that?"

I get that, but how is suing both agencies going to help the matter? The two agencies should be in court figuring out which one legally should be paid. It's kind of strange to be suing both agencies to figure out who you should pay. You wait for the courts to determine between CAA and WME and then you pay the one they rule on. I guess whatever floats their boat. It's such a sue happy world we live in now. I
AmericanPsychoWolf - 9/7/2012, 7:23 AM
fanboys hate Nolan because he "doesn't follow the source material" I don't care what happens with the source material as long as i get a good movie and it doesn't bastardize %100 of the character.
Godzillafart - 9/7/2012, 7:40 AM
Why exactly are people trashing Nolan here? Hey is trying to figure out who he legally owes money to so he can pay them. What's the problem?

And this from the guy who thinks BB is a stinking pile of over-rated dog poop.
GoILL - 9/7/2012, 7:45 AM
I have read numerous times on here that since 2008/09 there were people trashing everything Marvel after TDK made a billion dollars at the box office. I'm not sure of how true that is since I just joined the site in May of this year so i'm not gonna go back and read all of that shit, but I think people hate on him because of that and what ThatWolfMan said.
SteveRogersSon - 9/7/2012, 8:03 AM
stop picking on him!
SteveRogersSon - 9/7/2012, 8:57 AM
Ben is that you?
thewonderer - 9/7/2012, 9:15 AM
People here would insult Nolan for anything. This just in, Nolan saved a box of kittens from being put down! What if they wanted to die? Nolan the villain!

Seriously, and honestly Nolan followed the source material MORE than Marvel does. Marvel keeps the designs accurate, Nolan doesn't, but the rest Nolan keeps more accurate than Marvel.
StormLoganSummers - 9/7/2012, 9:25 AM
That gif is too funny!
PopcornMode - 9/7/2012, 9:45 AM
Haters are really easy to identify. They are too obvious. I have seen one particular person here that admitted he has not seen TDKR, yet he keeps on making fun of others who liked it. Really? I am not sure what Nolan did to be hated this much. SMH
jimpinto24 - 9/7/2012, 10:00 AM
WME are just trying to cash in on success of TDKR. *SIGH*
DioFoRio - 9/7/2012, 10:06 AM
Nolan's such a rich Loser!!! Gotta sue people for more money just because of the Colorado shootings. He's such a hack loser
