Making Of The Hardshell Green Goblin Mask For Sam Raimi's SPIDER-MAN

Amalgamated Dynamics Incorporated has just released their third behind-the-scenes video featuring the making of the Green Goblin mask for Sam Raimi's Spider-Man. This video focuses on the design for the hardshell mask that Willem Dafoe wore in the film.

Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc. was presented with the challenge of creating Spidey's most iconic villain, the Green Goblin, for Sam Raimi's Spider-Man (2002). They tried a couple different approaches, one a radical animatronic/makeup hybrid, which we've seen two test reels of, and the other was a hardshell mask. That version would of course make the final cut, and now you can view the intricate sculpting that went into it. Beat that Andrew Garfield and your digital Goomba... I mean Lizard.

^^^ They should have gone with something like this. The Green Goblin is NOT a Power Ranger. It was the worst part of Spider-man (2002).

*sigh* yeah goblin mask sucked. dafoe was the perfect osborn AND goblin though. still better than the lizard's face. when will they get spidey's villains right? don't even get me started about venom. grrrr. on the other hand, i thought sandman was spot-on despite the rest of the movie being sucktastic.

I would love to hear the reasoning behind the decision to use the "Hardshell" and not the fully functional Goblin face. The 1st Goblin wouldve been the better choice because it wouldve given Defoe room to act and it wouldve been something unlike anything we had ever seen and in 2012 we still havent seen something that well made.

Instead they went with a look that we had seen a million times.

It was a mistake obviously but 2002 Spider-Man was still great. At least it didnt have a very poorly made CGI cartoon for a villain like Webbs horrible version.

The Goblin's costume was the worst part of Spider-Man 1. He looks like Jet Jaguar.

We need to understand they went with this design because comicbook movies weren't as popular or guaranteed successes (if the movie is any good) as they are today.

That's the reason they went with the shitty x-men uniforms as well.

If it was made like that today, well, that would be just plain laziness.

I come to this site to read UNBIASED articles. People like nailbiter putting their opinions in the actual article just make this entire thing seem like a flame war waiting to happen. It's good that you have your opinion, nail, but keep it in the comment section, not in the actual article.

Now to my opinion. The "goomba", as you call it, was 10x better than the crap wannabe Power Ranger villain that the "Green Goblin" looked like. The only villain I really liked out of the entire Raimi trilogy was Doc Ock. Everything else was just too goofy and buffoonish. Just my opinion.

What they ended up doing was fine for when the movie was released. That mask in the video above looks more ridiculous than the "power ranger" suit IMO. Not everything from a comic book is going to look great in a live action film.

The costume for GG was hands down the worst part of the first movie.

Say what you will, but Lizard was awesome in TASM. When I left the theater with a group after seeing the film, one guys wife said "The bad guy was terrifying. He seemed powerful and mean and you could tell the lizard juice had made him crazy".

Couldn't agree more...although as a fan I would have liked to have seen the inclusion of his family, which would have added depth to the character.

Clearly people forget what the powerrangers looked like. If anything, spiderman looks more like a power-ranger.

Everyone keeps raving about how the lizard looks more like his comicbook counterpart. Well no crap, he is incredibly easy to get right, he's a lizard monster.

The green goblin on the other hand is harder to get right because he is a dude who puts on a suit. Their thought process was to have an industrial suit that actually has functionality rather than looks. Keep in mind superhero films weren't nearly as big at the time so they wanted to make something more realistic and not gamble on something looney like a latex mask.

But overall the only villains that any spiderman film really nailed on appearance was doc ock and sandman

I'll take the Lizard design over this crappy costume any day. Tobey and this costume killed Spider-man 1 for me. I'm glad they moved on

There is one thing I did not like about the Lizard in TASM, and that was when he spoke as the lizard. I actually laughed out loud when he spoke, it just looked horrible. They could have tried a little harder getting the the actors voice synced with the CGI.

The Lizard DEFINITELY looked better than that crap.

If you listen to the commentary they said they were actually going to have Spidey make a goomba joke while fightin the lizard in the sewer, but they ended up not including it. Which would've been cool. But a lot of people wouldn't have gotten the joke sadly.

well as much as I don't really agree with or like nailbiter111 some of the time. gotta agree with Nailbiter111 that it could of been much worst, where did you those pieces?


Personally I'm fine with what we got, its not really a power ranger outfit, but I can see where you guys are coming form. Defoe though knocked it out of the park. while the hybrid effect would of been cool, in the end I'm glad we can see what might of been and what has been.

@TheWallCrawlingMenace we get it you LOVE TASM and think its DA BEST MOVIE EVER! and think SM is a piece of crap. honestly comparing the two is worthless they are two different things if you want to compare it to something then compare it to TASM 77 2012 is a remake of the 1977 TASM with story beats form Sam Rami's Spider-man. Happy now jerks?

Obviously Raimi's Goblin couldve been worse, he couldve looked as bad as Webb's Lizard or Webb's Spider-Man design.

@TheHolyDemon There's no Statute Of Limitations on movies. Phantom Menace still sucks and as great as Raimi's film was his Goblin did disappoint. So if the subject gets brought up, yes people will voice their opinions.
