COMICS: There's A New Bat On The Block! Dynamite Announce THE BLACK BAT

Now where have I heard of a bat-themed vigilante before? Actually, this is not a ripoff - both characters (apparently) first appeared around the same time in 1939, but now Dynamite have reintroduced Tony Quinn, aka The Black Bat..

"Tony Quinn is a brash defense attorney for the mob, one who compromises his ethics for financial gain. However, when he refuses to cross the line and commit murder, he is tortured and blinded by his gangster employers. But then, a fortuitous meeting with a covert agency gives him a chance to make amends, and Tony dons the dark mantle of the Black Bat in his redemptive quest to right the wrongs of his past."

The character was previously a part of Dynamite's mini-series Masks, but will now be getting his own ongoing series from Brian Buccellato (The Flash) and Ronan Cliquet (Green Hornet). You can see some more variant covers at the link below.

This might be the most creative character ever made. A blind lawyer who fights crime and dresses like a bat? This is why dynamite comics are winning people. Take notes DC and marvel.

Fun fact:

The Black Bat - that is, Tony Quinn is actually a public domain character. Anyone can write around him as long as it doesn't copy anything set out by the publisher above

Guys, he predates Daredevil by almost 30 years and if anything, going by what I've read, Batman actually borrowed from this guy if anything.

@Ror - Other than the ignorant people who just dont understand that this guy isnt a blatant ripoff, I feel like what the problem should be here is that they're clearly trying to use this guy to capatalize on The Dark Knight's current popularity over at DC. If he hasnt been around for years, there's no need for a sudden resurgence just to ride the big guy's coat tails. He's only gonna be seen as a ripoff no matter what the facts are.

Oh I know that, I'm not saying I'm gonna be buy the comic or anything, but it's unfair to call him a ripoff..maybe timely cash-in yes!

Seriously. Comments like "He's just Batman mixed with..." clearly show you don't know (or care to find out about) your history. The Black Bat was a character in a series of crime novels that predates anything at Marvel or DC. Batman and Daredevil came from this guy. Just like Spiderman took inspiration from the Spider.

What gets me is that you guys are making these comments on the internet, where it would take you two seconds to open another window and google this character to find out if he is indeed a rip off before sticking your foot in your mouth. Or is it that much effort to take that extra 5 seconds to do that (Before some smart ass says I don't care enough to expend the effort)?

Anyways, Dynamite's been doing a great job with the pulp heroes. Masks has been great too. I highly recommend it.

Nice to see that some people do a little research before calling The black Bat a copy and ripoff. Dynamite has been doing a great job with old golden age and pulp heroes. I have found these comics to be good entertainment and a nice throwback to when comics were fun, but also relevent as to history and a little social commentary. The Shadow and Spider are great reads, as is Masks.

I'll read it. If the story can keep me intrigued then I'll continue to read it. I dig the ties to the mob and I like the idea of a blind guy with a cape. That second cover is pretty cool. Who owns dynamite?
