EDITORIAL: What ABC Should Do With New Marvel Show

What kind of show would fit in the MCU? What show would be the best way to introduce new characters and tell different stories than the live action movies? Find out here.

Yesterday, according to Deadline and reported by CBM's MarvelFreashman we learned Marvel TV division may be in talks to do an drama series based on the Avengers. It is said, “...the the connection to the Avengers franchise would be light as the project is expected to be set in the universe and feature some of its themes and feel but may not include any characters from Joss Whedon’s blockbuster.”

Of course this was met with mixed feelings from the fans. How could it be good? Well, this is my take on how ABC can make this one of the best live action shows ever.

I've been thinking of what Marvel could do with live action television series for some time now. And I have come with one conclusion. They should do a TV series based on the fantastic comic Secret Avengers.



Wait! Who are the Secret Avengers? Well, they're basically a special ops Avengers team. They save the world secretly, stop disasters from happening.

Would you have any characters from the films crossover?
Yes, in a way. I would have the characters crossover, just not the actors.

The Team



Captain America
While Evans has done a great job in playing Cap, he is still portraying a character. It's the same with Bond, Sherlock Holmes, or Robin Hood. He can be recast for the TV series. People would understand this. And I doubt most would mind.



Moon Knight
Despite he gets a lot of hate, Moon Knight would be an excellent addition to the MCU. He would be a sort of cool guy in the series, with all the gadgets, sort of a combination of Iron Man and Batman. I feel confident that he would be honestly a fan favorite of the team.



Shang-Chi
Some have felt a sort of Ninja, martial artist, should have been in the Avengers. Well, Shang-Chi would be the character for them. Being brilliantly used in the Secret Avengers series, it would be hard to have a live action version go wrong.



Valkyrie
Who wouldn't like an Asgardian warrior on their team? Being sort of a combination of Wonder Woman and Thor. Valkyrie would be a great character for Cap to get on his team, giving a bit more muscle strength to the team as well.



Captain Britain
Bringing even more strength to the team, Captain Britain would be an interesting addition to the cast of characters. It would also be interesting how he interacted with a certain other Captain...



War Machine
War Machine would fill Iron Man's place, but would give us an unused character to develop. Sure he was in other movies, as he will be in the upcoming Iron Man 3 but that doesn't mean he just has to be a sort of sidekick to Iron Man all the time. He could be a part of his own team.



Hawkeye
This would really give this character some time to shine. While Jeremy Renner played this character brilliantly in Marvel's The Avengers, he need a bit more time concentrated on him. This would also be a great place for him and Cap to butt heads a bit as they did in the original comics.



Black Widow
How can you top the incredible performance from Scarlett Johansson as the deadly spy? Well, you get the right director. More on that later. The deadly spy would make not only a great addition to the group, but would serve as a place to explore her character as well.

Others could include Falcon, Winter Soldier, Ms Marvel, Agent 13 (Sharon Carter), and Ant-Man after their live action debut.

What about Villains?

The Villains



Shadow Council
You have a lot to choose from here. From Aloysius Thorndrake, Zheng Zu, Max Fury (some slight variations would be necessary), and my personal favorite, John Steele. I'm sure there could be ways to weave even more villains in to keep the Secret Avengers busy.



How would you go about introducing the new characters in the MCU?

Much like the comic series, there would be episodes which introduce the character and show Cap asking them to be a part of the team. This could be used to let a character (if popular enough) have his own spin off TV series.



How would you keep up with all the continuity?

Since the whole team is a “secret” there would be no reason to have any of the characters mention the other team. The Secret Avengers would do their thing and the main stream Avengers would do their thing.



But who should direct? Who would be able to handle this many characters in a TV series and make everything look good on a TV budget?

Joss Whedon. Joss isn't the guy to be too high and mighty for a TV series and he can multitask well. I think he would honestly jump at the chance to do this. He would also be able to handle all the characters and use them the best way possible. This would also be nice as he could continue to work with Marvel and possibly see how it would be best to pull of the next Avengers film. If he didn't have time after a while, they could easily get someone else. But he should start it.

Why would this show be a success? With most loving the Avengers, I think this show would appeal to both fans and non fans of the genre. If Marvel hired Joss, they could even build up the fact they have the director of the Avengers. It would be something new we've never seen before on TV. There have been solo live action shows before in the superhero genre but besides a few non comic book based shows, there hasn't been any team up shows that I can recall.

Marvel could really have a gem with this idea. I honestly think it would be incredibly popular if done right and would give us something to watch till the next movie.

sorry dude but thats like; the WORST idea i've heard in a while. THEY WILL NEVER DO A SECRET AVENGERS SHOW i guarantee you since they were quoted as comparing it to a "buddy cop" formula then it will more than likely be HEROES FOR HIRE featuring L.C + D.R. thry could do a spin-off of AKA JESSICA JONES still if the original show they premiere is a success!

dellamorte1872 Trust me dude, it would work. Joss made Firefly which would get a lot of people interested in the show. No one thought the Avengers would work either. :)

Moon Knight actually DOESN'T get that much hate, or any really, from people who know who he is. Ever since Charlie Huston's reboot, the character's psychosis has made him all the more interesting.

Secret Avengers would be a serious mistake, however. SHIELD is THE most logical progression, and it could introduce so many characters while not having a clear, defined narrative. It would also be cheaper.

Tainted87 Most don't know who he is though. Shield could be good but we've already seen Government spy shows, why not a spy superhero team? And don't worry too much about the cost of stuff, Joss made his shows very cheap yet had some great special effects.

If it's good, I'll watch it; but I don't want CBMs to have the same issues that comic books have in that you have to know a plethora of back story to know what's going on. The problem with a combined universe is that eventually, new people are going to have trouble jumping in. And if things happen on the show that are important to the movie, you'll have more people jumping ship than getting on.

BattlinMurdock True, but you just have to be careful to make sure each episode is understandable by itself, but I personally hate it when they don't have any story arcs. You just have to make sure your arc is understandable to the person jumping in. All TV shows deal with this so I'm sure it would work.

that makes lil sense considering FIREFLY failed to garner ratings and was CANCELLED before the film adaption. this would be a reversal to that formula. which im sorry but just WONT happen no matter how much you personally like the idea

dellamorte Sorry you don't like it dude, but I think they could really make this a success. Besides while it may have failed financially it got enough response and fan base it got a feature film! So I'd say in a lot of ways that is a success weather you like it or not. I mean come on Marvel hired him to direct their biggest blockbuster they had.

and? it wasnt an original idea it was an amalgamation of MARVEL sorce material both the films and comics he didnt CREATE anything! FIREFLY he created and it failed, as well as the film. so neither is really hugely successful

dellamorte1872 And what would he be creating here? It would be like his Astonishing X-men run with the Avengers in a TV series. Even you admit he does characters well when he has source material. So yeah, it would be a success.

dellamorte1872 You aren't going to get it so why should I explain it to you? People get it that it's a character. It's not a big deal. It's like a shoe, it doesn't matter who puts it on, it's still the same shoe!

Dellamorte1872 I'm sorry you don't like it, but they were going to recast Banner for the Hulk show so what's the problem? Recasting is just like a different artist taking over for the story. It's not a biggie.

I see, I like the idea. Even if it's with some of the characters and not all of what you listed.

I like the show Alphas a lot. No real super powered hard hitting characters in it...but each have a unique skill to bring to the team. That show works for me (I am sure not everyone) so I see no reason that Marvel couldnt bring something to TV with a little more zing and pop to it.

Characters like Hawkeye and Back Widow would work nicely, however I don't think characters that rely heavily on cgi, explosive sets and big action sequences can work on the small screen, so that would be a no to a few of the characters such as War Machine. I know shows like Smallville did just that, and used one of DC most powerful characters, but it felt a lot more intimate and characters we've already seen in all their glory on the big screen just wouldn't be done justice on television.
But maybe I'm just not being optimistic and I'll be proven wrong in a few years time :P

I appreciate the effort but having two different actors play the same character in one continuity at the same time is just confusing and uneccesary. Buy good effort.

@Dellmorte why the [frick] would they cast for Avengers 2 exactly, if the movie was to made in 2020 fair enough.

DarkGrifter They get better and better and stuff like this. I think it would be fine. Smallville looked alright and it was several years ago, so yeah, I'd say that they could do it.

Hellsing I think once it was done, people won't mind. I probably could see fans of the TV series complaining about Evens! LOL!

I would imagine something for TV that is "Avengers related" and takes place in the same universe as the films would have to be somewhat along the lines of Marvel's FRONTLINE comic run. I could easily see a reporter or two covering super hero events or situations without ever having to see the heroes.

Hawksblueyes Thanks! That's true, but I don't think they could do the person who comes to mind with that series, Foswell, because he's related to the Daily Bugle. Perhaps another character. It would just depend on a lot of things to make it interesting enough to watch.

@superotherside: you mentioned Superman and Sherlock Holmes as instances of two versions of the same character being portrayed at once, but those are both two separate universes Elementary and Sherlock are in no way related just like Superman Returns and Smallville had no connections, the TV series however is said to be part of the MCU therefore having a different Cap, Hawkeye, War Machine etc in the TV series to the films would mess with continuity. It WOULD then be an issue. Despite this, it's an interesting suggestion for what the show would be.

Frogman Thanks, but it wouldn't be a problem, if both actors were good. Having it be in the same continuity isn't a big deal, as different artists use the same continuity. It's not a big deal. The characters are bigger than the actors, they are just feet to fill the shoes.

I think Marvel might paint themselves in a corner with too much too soon. I am not saying that there shouldn't be superheroes, just that the main character/s are normal agents. If the show focuses around the main characters or avengers then I could see continuity and quality suffer. It sucked that war machine wasn't in the avengers... what about all these new heroes not being there either. It wouldn't make sense.

They said it would be in the universe but not involve any of the avengers. So basically a way they can set up heroes without having to make them their own movie. I personally think it will be Heroes for Hire. Said a cop show. It's kinda like that

@superotherside: I think if they had two different versions of Cap at the same time people wouldn't see it as part of the same universe as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they'd just see it as a separate series.

I like the attempt but I don't like the Idea of recasting characters who are supposed to share the same universe with their other actor counterpart. I just doesn't make sense. I think a Heroes for Hire approach would be optimal to share this universe. Think about it Danny and Luke can grow together trying to make ends meet for the first season. In the second season they can be recruited by shield and have Jessica Drew be their Liaison. You can even introduce moon knight and several other heroes. If you put any Avenger in the show have the actor that portrayed them in the movie cameo.

thank you @HUSH YOU GET WHAT IM SAYING UP THERE ^ HEROES FOR HIRE is te best option marvel has thus far. it can have multiple spin-offs all from THAT back bone. AKA JESSICA JONES, MOON KNIGHT, ETC. HULK is a pipe dream that'll "die on the vine" as they say....it is a lofty goal but i bet film is where the character will stay

DUH? @SOS thats what i'm saying AVENGERS 2 is contractually obligated to feature the same actors, why recast and recast so soon after one iteration just to revert back. its like a ping-pong effect between two types of mediums. its a dumb [frick]ing move.

I have a feeling Item 47 was a prototype for this show, to see if something based around agents would work, tracking down lower level super-villains and meeting the occasional cult superhero. Pretty good idea really. And they can amalgamate Jessica Jones into the show as a reporter learning more and more about the new superhero community.

Secret Avengers blows....

Heroes for Hire as a buddy comedy/ action show, with Luke Cage, Danny Rand, Misty Knight, and Colleen wing. Make it funny, action packed, and full of references to the Marvel Universe. First case, they get hired to find a portable "Pym" particle generator.
