UPDATE: PRESS RELEASE: Marvel's THE AVENGERS Expected To Cross $600M Domestically Today

We knew it was closing in on this milestone BO feat, but it seems today is the day the movie will officially become one of only 3 films in history ever to pass $600 Million domestically..

There just doesn't seem to be any stopping the juggernaut that is Marvel’s The Avengers. The movie is expected to cross the $600 million domestic box office threshold today, becoming one of only three films in history ever to reach this milestone. The film’s global total is now an estimated $1,438.3 million, and it stands as the #3 film of all time globally and domestically.



Marvel/Disney have sent out the following release, which details The Avengers amazing rise to box office glory..

Marvel’s The Avengers opened in North America May 4 with a staggering $207.4 million – the biggest domestic debut of all time – and has been shattering domestic box office records ever since including the industry’s all-time second weekend record with $103 million; fastest film to reach $200 million (3 days), $300 million (9 days), $400 million (14 days), and $500 million (23 days); and highest Saturday ($69.5 million) and Sunday ($57 million) totals. It is the #4 film of all time internationally with $838.9 million.

Among only 12 films that have grossed $1 billion at the global box office, Marvel’s The Avengers is one of five billion-dollar Disney releases, which also include Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Alice in Wonderland, Disney•Pixar’s Toy Story 3, and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.


Just a small UPDATE, as expected the movie has indeed passed the $600M mark!

Without the re-release of Titanic The Avengers probably will be top 2. If they re-release it sometime it will definitely beat Titanic even with the re-releases. TDK made 14 million in Japan but Transformers DOTM made 54, Pirates of the Caribbean made 84, both Toys Story 3 and Deathly Hallows part 2 made more than 120. Even with such a late opening, I expect more than 20 million.

Wow, someone really brought up the adjusted argument again? *sigh* I have said it before and I will say it again: Gone With The Wind, Sound of Music, and others like them had no competition and wouldn't sell nearly as many tickets today and make jack shit for money. That is why adjusted is stupid, it doesn't account for things like that. Please, stop spouting that bullshit!

i said to myself only a film with a bunch of superhero's would probably rival that.
either JL or Avengers. crazy, titanic sorta cheated with rerelease but yeah a movie finnally beat its og run.

Congrats to Whedon and Marvel. Marvel, speaking for Whedon, "I believe some compensation is in order."

And congratulations to DoubleD for making a sensible prediction on TDKR boxoffice. For one, 1.1B is possible, though I doubt it, and two, he didn't predict that it would beat The Avengers, and then he followed up with a couple of reasons why it might not make 1.1B. I think if Batman does 'die' at the end, it might actually help the BO, even if no one believes it, but what really will hurt TDKR is the lack of 3D ticket sales. Of course, Nolan can always re-release it in 3D to put it over the top.
What The Avengers has done is fantastic... all CBM fans should be happy for it.

TDK had a dark tone and yet it was a box office juggernaut at the time of its release. It doesn't matter if it is dark. As for Batman dying, we don't know if he will or not. If he does, it won't hurt tickets sales unless there's no point to it. And so what if he does die? There are alot of movies that were successful that killed off the main characters at the end. Gladiator, Titanic, Exorcist, etc.

Avengers did $962K on Monday.

It will likely do something about $960K - $980K Tuesday which puts it at $600.2 million by today's end.

@CaptainObvious: Well there is one notable difference between those and TDKR. Those movies didn't have a beloved character that had been around and famous for a REALLY long time before the movie.

Regardless though, TDKR will still make a ton of money whether they kill him or not. How the movie is received will be what changes with that.

Yeah yeah, and look how many total movies released in the same years GwtW and SW premiered. There was no home video market, no cable, and no internet, so movies had alot more time to sit in theaters for repeat business.

So the villain in the next movie has to be James Cameron, he is the only force that the Avengers haven't beat yet, but the might of the Avengers along with the power of sequels will be strong enough to destroy Pandora and sink the Titanic again and forever. I still know plenty of die hard Dark Knight fans who never read a comic book in their life who have not seen Avengers and are "Waiting till it comes to the cheap theaters". I am wondering how much money is going to be made during that time frame. I will see the movie for the ninth & tenth time when it hits the cheap theater. That is another $8 of my money in Marvels pocket.

I also agree that no movie has better captured a comic book reading experience than the Avengers, making it the greatest CBM of all time in my book. That it made some money don't hurt either.

They are valid points however since I have nothing to gain financially from TDKRs I'd be more than happy no bratty bloody kids kicking my chair or talking (happened through The Avengers). On Batman dying, I think it would be a bold move which I have no problem with. They'll proberbly be rebooting after this anyway, so if your going out, then go with a big [frick]ing bang!

all this adjusted for inflation shit,you've got to remember that back when gone with the wind & star wars were released there was no vhs or internet,so the only way to see a new film you had to go to the cinema,that is why they grossed so much.

"Adjusted box office" is a load of crap.

It's not how much money a movie actually made, it's how much a movie would have made with the same attendance at today's prices.

But that's ridiculous.

A lot of these older films wouldn't have been as well attended by today's audiences, wouldn't have been as well attended back then if films cost as much they do today. And most of these top "Adjusted" films made their money over multiple re-releases over the span of decades, from before the era of home video. They don't support movies like that to nearly the same degree anymore.

And even if you put all that money they made in a vault it would not magically become more money as ticket prices increased.

But look... I get what people are trying to prove by it, which is a vast difference in attendance. Yet... come on, if that's the case, then talk about it in terms of attendance, not in terms of totally imaginary box office numbers that have no basis in reality.

Am I the only person who thinks this still might beat Titanic's domestic gross? No that it matters all that much, but I kind of see this as the nerd equivalent of betting on horses. Titanic with the re-release stands at like $658 mill domestic. I think Avengers has another 60 mill in it this summer. I won't bet my Boba Fett on that, I'm just sayin'.

The funniest part of all your little debates over which movie is better is that outside of this website people make no distinction between which characters are are marvel and which are DC. The general audience eagerly awaits tdkr just as much as Spiderman and just as much as they did the avengers. All these movies will be behemoths at the box office.

People say that you only apreciate good things when they are done. Now that both theaters in my town stoped screening The Avengers, I can only say that I am proud and happy that I watched it 8 times. Now that it is over, I regret nothing because I enjoyed it to the fullest.

@Nomis Imagine Marvel Studios doing an X-Men movie and in the after credits scene,the big reveal villain was Apocalypse just like they did with Thanos in The Avengers.That would be beyond epic.That's why I say 20th Century Fox are so stupid.The X-Men has the best villains in their rogues gallery.I would also love to see the Sentinels and Master Mold on the big screen.The X-Men universe has so much blockbuster potential!

The 3D argument is really getting silly as for one, IMAX general costs more than 3D, if people cry about the 3D factor, then one would be able to also whine aout the IMAX factor and IMAX is a factor for quite a few movies, not to mention the obvious ones. Serously, don't hate and just be happy a comic movies did so darn great.

My only hope is that Marvel uses this great success for their other projects.

It doesn't look like it though, as Alan Taylor is a TV director and Shane Black is kinda random. BUT, I do trust those two as I love Game of Thrones and Black seems good in interviews.

Its the Cap 2 director I'm worried about, why is Marvel hiring these nobodies? Get David Fincher or some shit, COME ON YOU JUST MADE A BILLION AND A HALF, Get some true talent on these projects!!!

In the old days, rereleases happened all the time plus movies stayed in theaters longer overall. Heck even up to the age of VHS, rereleases happened a lot.

Remember, before there were VHS tapes or DVD's,that was the only way to watch a movie until the had a special presentation on TV or something, and even then until VHS came out, you still could not have a personal copy of your own. That's why older classics like Gone with the Wind made so much, you have a classic that people loved and the only way to see it was in a theater for the most part. Also when VHS first came out, it was pretty expensive, not everyone could afford it.

Times change, and its because of facts like that where allthough movies adjusted for inflation are interesting facts and can give you a great idea how popular something was, thats as far as i will go with it, myself.

I agree, so many good villains: Apocalypsis, Phoenix, Juggernaut, Omega Red, Mr. Sinester and even the [frick]ing Sentinels, all of them misused or no used at all, I hope they use some of this villains in the X-Men:FC Sequel and X-Men 4
