EDITORIAL: Now That Marvel Have Him Back, What Will They Do With DAREDEVIL?

As we know, despite a solid pitch from director Joe Carnahan, Fox were forced to allow Daredevil to return home. Here I'll examine the possible pros and cons of a character like Matt Murdock joining the current Marvel Cinematic Universe..

The biggest talking point for us CBMers yesterday was the news that the rights to Daredevil would, most likely, revert back to Marvel around mid October. Great news right? Well, yes - potentially.

I'll start by saying that a few major flaws aside, I actually quite enjoyed Fox's first Daredevil movie - particularly the more fleshed out director's cut. I found it to be a pretty faithful interpretation of Frank Miller's take on the character. Of course it still left a lot to be desired, but when Fox announced a while ago that they would be rebooting and going with Miller's "Born Again" arc, I was delighted. Fox have made a few lousy CBMs no doubt, but they also proved that they could learn from their mistakes when they followed up X-Men 3 with the brilliant X-Men: First Class, so I was fairly optimistic. The studio has also never been afraid to get a bit dark n gritty with their CBMs, and that is something a character like Daredevil would definitely benefit from.

But as we know, despite almost managing to draft Joe Caranhan to helm the movie, the clock ran out and Fox were forced to allow the rights to revert back to Marvel. From one perspective this is obviously brilliant news - Marvel can take one of their most popular characters home, and get working on integrating him into their movie universe with a brand new origin story. Great, but how long will it take for them to do that? Marvel Studios have a LOT on their plate leading into their "phase 2" movie production slate, and even after that there are several other characters that are rumored to be next for the big screen treatment before Daredevil will get a look in. And even if they do get to work on a movie before too long, what type of movie would we be getting?

Lets be honest, as great as the majority of Marvel Studios movies have been, they haven't really had much of an edge to them. The Avengers upped the ante a bit with the murder of Agent Coulson (yeah, that's a spoiler, if you haven't seen that movie yet get off this site:), and a pretty nasty villain, but aside from that, it's all been pretty kid friendly fare. And that's worked fine for the characters they have been dealing with, but it won't for ol Hornhead. Of course they could draw from Mark Waid's most recent incarnation of the character, which definitely lightened things up somewhat, but is that what people would want to see? Doesn't the "The Man Without Fear", a hero who lives in perpetual darkness deserve to have a movie that reflects that and takes inspiration from those great, Noirish crime stories most closely associated with him?

Hey, maybe that will all be moot and Marvel will take a different approach than they have in the past. Hopefully we won't be waiting around too long to find out.

A Marvel Team up plzzz : )
AlexDeLarge87 - 8/15/2012, 12:54 PM
Not against the 70s setting. Could be awesome if don right.
MrCameron - 8/15/2012, 12:56 PM
Marvel Knights, please.
KatanaHero - 8/15/2012, 12:57 PM
I think with the success of the gritty/realistic take on the Dark Knight Trilogy, Marvel would want to capitalize on that with a Daredevil series of a similar tone. I mean, Daredevil also explores themes of justice, vigilantism and tragedy.
superotherside - 8/15/2012, 12:59 PM
I think a TV series would work well too. A film might be good but with the cosmic universe being done more in movies now, it might be nice to see the street heroes go to the small screen.
Rothwilder - 8/15/2012, 1:00 PM
Don't need a long origin story. Can be summed up in 5 minutes just like it was in the last one. Accident = blind.
CapFan79 - 8/15/2012, 1:01 PM
I would have liked to see Carnahan's Taxi Driveresque DD, but that would've been a one off deal.

What I don't want is every marvel film having to have cameos all over now. I thought Fox doing the Wolverine with the Silver Samurai could've lead into DD since I believe Wolverine takes place late 70's early 80's too.
Minotauro - 8/15/2012, 1:01 PM
Now that Joe's script is trashed. Anything about daredevils future is bleak. Because right now, DD doesn't fit what Marvel is trying to do with all these pointless over saturated team-ups(GotG & Avengers in the future). DD is just going to be another team player overshadowed by other characters. Sad. Unless they decide to make his films solo with no interruptions(maybe a few appearances) from outside characters then things will be bright again.
TheAmazingSpiderMan47 - 8/15/2012, 1:02 PM
i think putting him in a tv show would work, and they could add other characters in to
thebatspider - 8/15/2012, 1:03 PM
I think if marvel adapting the comic civil war, then daredevil will be include, becuase many say that daredevil is back to marvel he will probably be in avengers 2, but daredevil was never part of the avengers as I remember, or am I wrong? well, I just asking a good adaption of the character.
AlexDeLarge87 - 8/15/2012, 1:03 PM
Make it darker but not too realistic. Otherwise people are gonna call it a copy of The Dark Knight trilogy.
Villains should be Kingpin, Bullseye and The Hand.
CaptainAmerica31 - 8/15/2012, 1:05 PM
Battleinmurdock- well that was before Disney bought marvel studios after that we got all the kid stuff, notice the differences between IM and IM2.
ninjaturtle11 - 8/15/2012, 1:07 PM
no movie, maybe a tv series or just put him in avengers 2 or 3
AlexDeLarge87 - 8/15/2012, 1:07 PM
"What I don't want is every marvel film having to have cameos all over now."

I agree.
jazzman - 8/15/2012, 1:07 PM
Daredevil should turn into a TV series

remember hes a lawyer and a crimefighter that would be cool as a tv show
IgnurRant - 8/15/2012, 1:08 PM
What will they do?

They will strip him of Hell Kitchen, throw a comedy-action tone on it, and make a red-suited Captain America.

PaulRom - 8/15/2012, 1:09 PM
A TV series would be really cool. Though I'd love to see a proper movie series. Could be absolutely fantastic if done right.
IgnurRant - 8/15/2012, 1:11 PM
Carnahan's DD would have crafted a beautifully visual 70s Hell Kitchen at it's most seediest.

Using DeNiro's Al Capone voiceover from Untouchables for Kingpin, showed he knew what enviornment to put DD in.

I really hope Marvel doesn't go for Born Again...I read the book, it was werid...
...Make Daredevil dark, NOT Matt Murdock, Matt was never the serious brutting type he had more of a dry sense of humor. And dont make it R, they will fail, horribly, it'll look like a Punisher meets Batman movie, & it will STINK.
But I'm glad horn head is home!
IgnurRant - 8/15/2012, 1:16 PM
Marvel needs a seperate Marvel Knight's imprint. A place where thrir street level character can excell with out gettin caught up in the light-hearted to es of the MCU or the cogs of Avengers over-reaching cosmic plots ala IM2.
Maxi91291 - 8/15/2012, 1:16 PM
I agree with Intruder .. I mean Joker killed how many ? ... maybe 20-25 people in TDK and that took place over several days ... Loki killed 80 people in 2 days ... lets talk about brutal and dark :D
IgnurRant - 8/15/2012, 1:17 PM
Intruder - blind fanboy unable to see faults in the MCU or the possibility of a good marvel movie outside of Marvel Studios.
KingLing - 8/15/2012, 1:18 PM
I don't really feel like you present an answer to the question. You just kind of end up sounding worried about Marvel having Daredevil instead of Fox. I'd personally prefer the Mark Waid Daredevil, since some of the previous stories I've read concentrated more on the gang stuff, when I want to see the superhero, ya know?
BarnaclePete - 8/15/2012, 1:19 PM
I think anybody looking forward to a Marvel made Daredevil movie might as well calm down and forge about it. You aren't going to see anything for a long time, if you see anything at all. If Marvel was willing to trade him off for Galactus then obviously they have no interest in making a movie about him. Would have been much better off keeping him with Fox.
Cerebro - 8/15/2012, 1:19 PM
For some reason I see Disney using Daredevil as a replacement for Spiderman in their cinematic universe.
ThaMessenger07 - 8/15/2012, 1:20 PM
If they Don't Start with the "The Man Without Fear" Story for the first film, they can go f*ck themselves...
rogmel - 8/15/2012, 1:22 PM
To this day I STILL can't believe that anyone views the DD movie (theatrical OR Director's Cut) as anything but a piece of tripe. It started off so promising but it went downhill after 15 minutes.

Oh God, that playground fight/dance thing that they did to me ranks right up there with "dark Peter's" club dance scene from Spider-Man 3 as far as worst scenes ever put in an CBM.
IgnurRant - 8/15/2012, 1:23 PM
The Joker took control of a city with a few drums of gas and a couple of bullets.

Loki couldnt conquer NYC with the "greatest" army in the galaxy with technology far greater than his opponents.
RorMachine - 8/15/2012, 1:23 PM
Kingling, I was never intending to provide answers, I just put the questions to you guys.
DarylTheBear - 8/15/2012, 1:26 PM
So Marvel/ Disney have Daredevil, Punisher AND Blade back in their stable. Frankly, I don't see them incorporating any of them into their cinematic universe unless they turn them into complete pussys/ marketable, child-friendly happymeal franchises.
It's a shame really.

The whole Marvel Knights thang didn't work out for the feature films.
The Ghostrider films were [frick]ing abysmal.
Punisher: Warzone was possibly the worst Marvel comic book movie ever.

Also, we're probably going to have to wait 3 to 4 years before Marvel/ Disney even pull their collective fingers out to make a DD movie.
Fox must be bricking it, what with the Fantastic Four deadline coming up pretty soon.
DrDoom - 8/15/2012, 1:26 PM
Daredevil under Marvel's banner will allow Marvel to make darker movies. Not every movie in the MCU will have a same tone, kids.
Pendaghast - 8/15/2012, 1:30 PM
i think marvel should start a sub company that work only on Marvel knights characters storylines etc, these movies should be additional to the phase 2 movies and be more adult themed, punisher, daredevil etc and not tie in with the lighter hearted movies
Maxi91291 - 8/15/2012, 1:31 PM
And yet Joker was a threat to the cops and a guy in a black suit with military equipment and Loki was a threat to an International peace force and the mightiest heroes ... and you never know .. maybe his plan was to loose the battle over earth .. he is the god of mischief .. Ok I didnt want to start the same old sh*t again .. I just agreed with Intruder.

Im glad DD is in Marvels hands ... Now make that Daredevil Born again storyline happen ...
TheAmazingSpidey63 - 8/15/2012, 1:31 PM
As I've said, DD will be a perfect starting point to branch off a shared MCU for other characters. For example, Blade and Punisher. Those type of characters (street level characters) have, as someone said before in another article, drama-driven stories that can be explored more with character developments, depth, great story arcs, and have appearances from other Marvel characters. Also, I was thinking that Marvel Knights should have their own shows as well. Just think. Punisher, Blade, Daredevil, Moon Knight, Ghost Rider (we need to get him back also), etc. It'd be great to expand more and more Marvel characters from BIG screen to small screen. Just sayin'.

:)
DanteSparda - 8/15/2012, 1:32 PM
TV Series please! Bring Whedon onboard!
HavocPrime - 8/15/2012, 1:32 PM
TV show on him would be good, be like a Law an Order episode but with ol horn head, with Luke Cage and Iron Fist gathering evidence on occasion
Maxi91291 - 8/15/2012, 1:32 PM
*lose
StrangerX - 8/15/2012, 1:35 PM
Daredevil and Punisher team up
Daredevil and She-Hulk team up
Daredevil in Heroes for Hire

All could work
Maxi91291 - 8/15/2012, 1:37 PM
Wouldnt it be fun to see MCUs take on "the trial of Incredible Hulk" ?? :D haha
