After watching the television spot directly below, take a look at the second video which features an interview with Peter Jackson that the L.A. Times recently conducted. Within that discussion he talks about the challenges of creating his version of Smaug. “The trouble with redesigning dragons I’ve found is… you very quickly can go into science fiction territory, and I don’t want to do that,” Jackson said. “I want to present the most venal, scary, decrepit, nasty dragon I possibly can.”

From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” the first of a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien. The three films tell a continuous story set in Middle-earth 60 years before “The Lord of the Rings,” which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar®-winning “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.”

The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain, first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of ingenuity and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities… A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” will be released on December 14, 2012, with the second film, “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” releasing December 13, 2013, and the third film, “The Hobbit: There and Back Again” slated for July 18, 2014. Starring: Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood, Andy Serkis and Richard Armitage.

I don't usually watch The Hobbit TV spots, but when I do, it has Smaug in it.

Can't wait.

And I'm seriously getting pumped for these movies. Sucks I have to wait til Boxing Day to see it but I suppose it's going back to the Lord of the Rings trilogy tradition.

Since their filming all three movies at the same time I would not be surprised at all if we don't see that Smaug footage until movie 2 or 3. It looked like he was attacking Lake Town which we won't see for awhile (though its possible it was a dwarf's flashback). But also the battle scene? Yeah I think PJ is smart and putting in teaser scenes from 2 and 3to get us all excited for 1.

Just a heads up so people don't whine and complain when they don't see that! Either way, this movie is gonna ROCK!

Oh yes, and lets not forget the shot of Dol Guldur at the end there. Awesome!

My guess is that the only time we see Smaug in the first film is when the Dwarves are telling Bilbo their backstory, and we see Smaug coming in and laying waste to the Lonely Mountain and the Dwarf community therein. I wish we were getting more, but with three films, I know that I'm going to have to wait another year for good dragon action.

Still, ever since the first time I heard that they were definitely going to do a Hobbit movie, I've been waiting to see how Smaug looked. I'm encouraged by Jackson's description of him. I don't want a dragon that looks like he escaped out of a Siffy movie fighting Mechacroc or some such silliness.

Also waiting for when Bilbo enters Smaug's chamber the first time. How many people in the crowd yell "LEEROY JENKINS!"? :)

Jackson said in the interview that we will get a brief glimpse of Smaug in the first movie -- from this TV spot, it looks like he'll be seen in a flashback showing the destruction of Dale. I'm guessing that we'll see Bilbo's encounters with Smaug in the second film, and Smaug's destruction of Lake Town in the third film.

Seeing Smaug in this will be a lot like seeing Gollum in Fellowship. More of a tease, really, but I'm cool with that. Plus, like others said, it'll likely be either in the prologue or as the dwarves flashback while telling Bilbo about what happened and, since film is a visual medium, that makes sense to show.

Looks great - can't wait!!#

@foxforce5 hopefully that doesn't mean they'll redesign him for the 2nd/3rd installment like they did with Gollum!
