With the recent news about Zach Snyder taking up directing responsibilities for Christopher Nolan's Superman:The Man of Steel, the cry for a costume change is once again rearing it's head among fans. This topic seems to come up constantly but every few years it gains enough momentum that people start paying attention to it.

In the last few days we have seen (in more than one article) people discussing the topic and even devoting entire articles to the subject. I for one, don't think there is a problem with Supermans costume and I would (as I have in the past) hate to see it change. I believe his costume is drenched in history and nostalgia and has moved far beyond the term iconic. There are many other costumes in the fictional world of superheroes but none like his.

Ask someone on the street what any superhero you choose, looks like. Some will know, most, definitely will not. Now, ask them to tell you what Superman looks like, you will get an answer every single time. He is known the world over by virtually everyone and has been for many, many years. You will find that he is referenced in every nook and cranny of our pop culture, in comics, movies, television and music. I could go on and on with how I feel about the subject but the point of this article is to see how you, the CBM community feel about his costume, so I won't even attempt to sway you one way or the other.

I would like to give credit to TheDarqueOne. His article EDITORIAL: The SuperSuit! is really what brought this POLL into being.

personally, i wouldn't have any problem with it, as long as they didn't try to make it all dark. as long as it kept the same feel as the classic. Possibly taking away the outside underwear would make a world of difference.

unfortunately, every single time they've tried to change Big Blue's costume, the fans whine and complain and they end up changing it back. He's just too classic, and his costume is too iconic. a costume change for Supes would never fly. Not for long, anyhow. History has proven it countless times.

just look at the miniscule changes that were made to the suit in Superman Returns, and many people still complained about it. "WAHH, the emblem isn't flat." "WAHHHHH, the emblem isn't big enough" "WAHHHH, the blue is one shad too dark."

so sad that progress will never be able to made on it.

That's about as smart as 'updating' Wonder Woman's outfit!

In movies and tv series from the 1940's to the 1990's Supermans costume has always stayed stayed the same, in the Kirk Alyn Serials, The Adventures of Superman, Superman I-IV, Superboy, and Lois and Clark. But they changed it in Superman Returns and look how that movie turned out. Keep it the same, it was that way on both the big screen and the small for 50 years changing little things like the size of the S and the length of the cape.

iconic costume only, don't go down the route of smallville.

that would piss me off big time.

I'd be okay with small tweaks, but nothing major. Gotta keep the colors, the shield, the cape, the boots, etc, but I don't care too much if they tweak it a little (maybe making it look a little more alien would be good, like something that would actually be worn on Krypton; after all, that's not an "S," it's his family crest)- whatever the filmmakers think looks best, as long as it still looks like SUPERMAN.

It would depend on the design. Some things pass, some don't. You'd need the perfect marriage of new subtle changes, along side the same iconic feel.

-Big shield is better than small sheild
-The "relief" given to the shield in Returns was a good change
-Darker/cobalt blue is better than baby sky blue
-Poppy Red is better than blood red
-The yellow should stand out, not be subtle.
-Panties can be given a new twist

I'd love to see people's own take on a new Superman suit :))

If the costume changes its just NOT Superman. Im all for tweaking it slightly,to give it an updated look but it should essentially stay the same, and be based on the same colours, The Returns getup was ok, though the the emblem should be larger, and the new costume shouldnt be as dark!

There's no need to change anything about the costume IMO. I would like something a little better than the one we saw in Superman Returns though. :)

For me the costume and the theme are the most iconic things to bless the superhero universe, they can be updated a touch but should essentially stay the same.

@CorndogBurglar

i agree with u Superman underwear needs to go and everyone was complaining it should stay cause that what make Superman.

im all for a change but dont do it like the Superman Returns outfit. Superman Returns costume was too dark and looks too plastic. Superman costume should be abit bright and the costume should be fabric.

I honestly can't find any need for a change of costume. His original outfit looks fine, and people are fine with seeing it on the big screen, so what's the problem?

InFamouslyCool
InFamouslyCool - 10/6/2010, 9:55 AM
do you want superman or someone else.. if you want superman, then the costume should remain the same. don't even know why a change would even be a thought.
Superman4
Superman4 - 10/6/2010, 9:56 AM
I concur, there's no problem with it. The trunks is fine it would look weird if it was gone because you just need that balance of color between the red and the blue.

Hey. Let's just change the American flag too. You know, make it more modern. Hell no! Leave the costume alone.

I always thought Dean Cains costume was pretty good. Definatly my favorite out of all the live action Superman costumes. It had the biggest S.

tea: I think I read somewhere if you see Supermans junk without the proper glasses, you can go blind. ;)

Superman4: I think so also.

@Hawksblueyes

i feel the costume needs some tweaking no one aint saying we need a complete change but it does need to be better then Superman Returns it was too plastic look and dark.

I could live with tweaking the costume a bit, but a major change in it is a horrible idea.
Superman4
Superman4 - 10/6/2010, 10:12 AM
@brazilian it's because back in the 30's circus performers and wrestlers were popular back then and almost "Superhuman". So Shuster and Siegel got their insperation from this and it's become a trend for comicbook superheroes since. It's almost like a tradition, you wouldn't want a jedi without his robes and lightsaber or a wizard with out his hat and staff.
RIKSHAWRenegade

The purpose IMO of the "outside underwear" is to better conceal the bulge. We really don't need to see a superheros dickprint now do we. Children don't need to see that! And thats my 2 cents on the issue.

@Messenger I like the S connecting with the cape allot but it just looks weird without the red trunks.

I don't even like Superman, but I have to admit his costume is iconic. More so than any other hero ever. I don't see how you can even make small tweaks without it changing it completely. What are we talking, different tones? Velcro attached cape instead of the tuck? Utility belt? Robotic suit? Stick with the classic.

supermans suit shouldn't be alien thats for sure because it would make people fear him. His suit works because he does not look badass he looks friendly. Leave Batman to be the dick who scares people and leave Superman to be a symbol of hope, of easier times. I wouldn't mind a suit with a replacement for the undies or without the sheild on the cape but the rest must stay.
