Grant Morrison Says BATMAN Is "Very Very Gay"

The writer doesn't suggest the character is actually homosexual, but describes the concept behind him as "gay". I dunno, read on and see what you make of it..

Batman has been described as a lot of things, but I think this might be a first (well, I'm sure somebody used the word after seeing Batman And Robin) - comic book writer Grant Morrison describes the ol Caped Crusader as "utterly gay" in an interview with Playboy..



"He's very plutonian in the sense that he's wealthy and also in the sense that he's sexually deviant. Gayness is built into Batman."


He continues..

"I'm not using gay in the pejorative sense, but Batman is very, very gay. There's just no denying it. Obviously as a fictional character he's intended to be heterosexual, but the basis of the whole concept is utterly gay. I think that's why people like it. All these women fancy him and they all wear fetish clothes and jump around rooftops to get to him. He doesn't care - he's more interested in hanging out with the old guy and the kid."


There is much more to the interview, and Morrison offers very interesting insights into many more characters he has worked on over the years, but this part really grabs the attention. Something tells me that might well be the entire point. What do you guys reckon? Morrison, who's take on The Dark Knight has been met with a mixed reaction by Bat-fans, has been writing the character since 2006, with story-lines that include “Batman & Son”, “Batman R.I.P.”, “Batman and Robin” and “The Return of Bruce Wayne”. His latest project is “Batman Incorporated” which hits shelves next month as part of DC's New 52.

Well, as I said I think he might just be [frick]ing with the fanboys for a bit of extra attention here. It doesn't bother me what he thinks, he's entitled to his opinion. Wasn't the biggest fan of his work on Batman but he has done some amazing stuff with other characters.

He is just baiting fanboys. The same can be said about nearly every superhero out there. Also, what is with the prejudice against gays? He pushes this out there like calling a superhero "gay" is an insult.

Gay is not a derogatory term.

Also Frank Miller stated that in his opinion Batman is sublimating his homosexual urges into crime fighting, and that his hate for the joker was actually an homophobic nightamre, also that it would be a lot healthier for Batman to come out of the closet.

I know Grant Morrison has been praised for more or less everything, but I really don't c the thrill about him... I didn't like 'Batman Inc.', the whole concept sounds stupid, and his run on Superman has been pretty off 4 me... I was hoping with the New 52, they'd get rid of Batman Inc. and reinsert 'Birthright' as Superman's origin, but shit can't b done now...

Going back to the topic at hand, I agree with RunDTC

@Tainted87 - Absolutely. Gay should not be a derogatory term amongst intelligent people. This is just Grant's way of networking. "Creator Alienation" is the new fanboy version of "love". We've lost Alan Moore to his overwrought principles against DC's behaviour. We've lost Frank Miller - trying to make a protest about greed and elitism 'unpatriotic'. Nice try. Thing again. And Grant's just stirring the pot like a spoilt child; "Notice me, notice me."

this is old news.hes had gay under tones from the start.also that pic is the cover of a det. comic.and was the only time ive seen the other suits.he alway wore close to what he has today.

Of course, "gay" in itself is no way an insult nor derogatory. But coming from one of the editors it kind of sounds as if he was poking fun at us, the fans. And I just can`t stand that (given his past work on Batman, "Arkham Asylum" not included).

Oh, and BTW, by that standard every superhero is gay, I don`t know what makes Batman "super gay".

Morrison's own, original stuff is great, like Transmetropolitan, and anyone who has not read We3 is doing themselves a serious disservice. What a fantastic story that was.

His run on X-Men was also great and a shot in the arm that the franchise had needed for a while at the time.

Back to We3, seriously, even if you hate Morrison, please give that book a read. I can't believe how good it was. Its also very emotional, in fact, I'll even admit that its the first comic i've ever read in my 30 years of collecting that actually brought a few tears to me eyes.

His work is hit or miss for me.
I only read what was on this article but I'm sure he'll get a lot of hate for this and then turn around to "clarify" or "apologize" because he directs his statement to be in a derogatory form.

So a man who fricked catwoman,talia and several other women is gay because he adopts kids from the street and gives them a chance at life while teaching them how to help their world by kicking ass? Sorry to burst your bubble but the batman concept is awesome. He is handsome and rich but also sensitive. Women love this kind of men. He fricks the best girls and is rich. Oh and also kicks major ass. That appeals to men. Sooooo,my point is that batman is 1000% straight. Maybe the old old comics were kinda cheesy but batman is not gay.

Why does it matter if he's gay or not?

When Rowling proclaimed Dumbledore was gay, it didn't make a difference. They're not writing the Batman stories with homoerotic subtext, because that's not what Batman is about. Any superhero could be gay. So, what? Their mission is to save the world, not get laid.

Look how offended a bunch of childish fanboys get over nothing. Morrison is the best writer in comics hands down. Far more creative than anyone out there. I love Batman and don't need to cry because someone sees the concept as gay.

I hope people study this interview from Morrison very well, and see the connection to the problems in the comic industry. In the late 80's comic creators became so popular they were treated as more important the the properties they were hired to write or draw. We had the likes of Rob Liefeld and Todd McFarlane exerting their will over Marvels most prized assets, their iconic characters. They knew the fanboys wanted more blood n guts, and in order to be popular, they obliged. It did make THEM money, but it hurt comics. Comics became a bloodbath display, with no real entertainment value. And when a parent bought her child an issue of Spawn in a collectors pack, she was shocked at the content. This helped lead to comics being pulled from Wal-Mart, just as Wal-Mart emerged as a super giant with its Supercenters. Comics no longer are sold in grocery stores or convenience stores either. Though you can find movies and toys related to comics at Wal-Mart, not comics. Comics are relegated to comic shops, usually in areas of a city that are low rent.
Grant Morrison is just another example of a person in comics who is a fan of himself and allows his interests to come before the character hes supposed to be writing.
This is why comics are in such bad shape today. Because the attitudes of the so called creators is to do whatever it takes to be "Popular". You can call it the Rob Liefeld approach.

Maybe instead of trying to fit his agenda on preexisting characters, Morrison should just try to create a valid gay superhero. Personally, I don't care about a characters sexuality as long as it isn't fabricated to grab headlines, to push an agenda, or goes against an already established sexuality.

Ugh...I just never really gave a sh-t about this guy...Somehow I give less sh-t then previously so I'm in the negative sh-t now.

I can't wait for the day when Grant Morrison is gone from the Bat-books and DC. I really do not enjoy his writing, also none of this dislike of him I have for him has nothing to do from his gay remark/s. I couldn't care less about that.

I hope he ends up writing for Image Comics lol.

lol ok i consider myself pretty open-minded but i do not now nor have i ever thought batman had an underlying gayness to his character, 60's TV show being the exception ;)

Frederic Wertham's accusations garnered the attention of Senator Estes Kefauver and his Senate Sub-committee on Juvenile Delinquency, where Wertham repeated many of his central claims.

Batman and Robin, Wertham charged, inhabited "a wish dream of two homosexuals living together." They lived in "sumptuous quarters," unencumbered by wives and girlfriends, with only an aged butler for company. They cared for each other's injuries, frequently shared quarters, and lounged together in dressing gowns. Worse still, both exhibited damning psychological characteristics: proclivities for costumes, dressing up, and fantasy play; secretive behavior and double-lives; little interest in women; and, most damning of all, neurotic compulsions resulting in their violent vigilantism. Indeed, Wertham argued, depictions of Batman and Robin were frequently homoerotic, visually emphasizing Batman's rippling physique and Robins splayed, bare thighs.

"Only someone ignorant of the fundamentals of psychiatry and psychopathology of sex can fail to realize the subtle atmosphere of homoeroticism which pervades the adventures," wrote Wertham. "The Batman type of story may stimulate children to homosexual fantasies."

Hear that men who have lost wives and kids who have lost mothers? Start kicking out your widowed Grandpas and start dialing escort numbers,throw highly visible orgies lest Grant "Intelligence is equivocal to the hypersexualizing of everything" Morrison deem thee, "very, very gay".

And in my mind, this is the part where Bob Kane kicks in Morrison's door, golden light showering through, steps into the room and slaps Morrison in his "necessarily erotically enticing left ear".

"Grant, you little bitch."

"Owwww!Now see,Bob, conceptually speaking, you're not offended by my pseudo-psychoanalysis of your subconscious intentions in the creation of Batman et all...What you really want to do is ravish my ear. Not with a slap, but with repetitive, preferably lubed, humping."

Kane stares but appears nauseous.

"Now listen, Bob...I'm into it too - surprise - and I've got a special dedicated ear-humping gimp mask up the stair for just such an occasion, and..."

A giant yellow "KAPOWWW" engulfs the room, crashing with the light sending sparks flying as Kane almost knocks Grant out with one cross, the bruising on the right ear visible immediately in dark purples and muted greens. Kane leans over, fists clenched so tight that the cigar he walked in with is beginning to break, and says...

"I don't think Batman is gay, but I know damn well know he ain't no damn pedophile you sick son of a bitch! Ya got me!?"

Peeking through elbows as Grant continues to cup his injured ears, the symbolism intentional to Kane's sense of indignation, Kane says,

" Next time I see you bring a hero created to teach kids about right and wrong, that's supposed to give hope of justice and protection for them, I'm coming back...and I'm bringing Kirby back with me! And that crazy little bastard, will do more than cuff your ears for ya, sonny - Got it!"

Kane motions to throw another punch, but stops short just to see Morrison flinch.

"Sissy."

A smirk briefly rises as Kane flicks the cigar at Morrison's shielded eyes, pivots, and walks out the front door as it slowly closes behind him leaving the room as dark as it was found.

Morrison's eyes widen, as he fumbles for his smartphone,

"Hey, yeah...you'll never believe what just happened...Mmm, no, I'm, well...I'll be OK, listen, you know that piece we held on to about Captain America and Bucky? Mhm, well,we're gonna run it, yeah...Mhm..And I think..."

Three thundering clatters shake the frame of the front door, pictures of Andy Warhol, Sigmund Freud and himself cracking and crooking from the knocks.

"Just stay on with me, there's someone at the door..."

As Morrison opens the door, hissing green mist that's filled his porch and obstructed vision past it, gently snakes in gnarled fingers over and around him, and over Jack Kirby's shoulders...As Morrison smiles sheepishly, Kirby, now blowing smoke into Grant's face, walks Morrison, backing him into his home. And amidst the sounds of glass breaking, wood cracking and mercy pleading, shouts of,

" What's funny? Funny how? Funny like a clown? I make you laugh, I amuse you!?"

...could barely be heard above the laughter of Joe, Will, Johnny, Jerry and Bob, who then quipped,

"He's lucky Miller hasn't died yet."
