COMICS: BATMAN And ROBIN #19 To Introduce Carrie Kelley

Many fans speculated that such would be the case based on the portion of the gatefold cover revealed prior to today and now, DC Comics has confirmed that The Dark Knight Returns character is officially joining the New 52.

Carrie Kelly is joining Batman and Robin Batman and Red Robin in issue #19 but will she be the new Robin following Damian Wayne's death? What does this mean for Harper Row? Following issue #19, the title features Batman team-ups with Red Hood, Batgirl, Catwoman and then Nightwing over the next four issues. But what about issue #24, which would hit LCS shelves in September, a month where DC Comics does something extravagant to celebrate the anniversary of the New 52 which launched in September 2011. Nothing would set social media afire like the introduction of a new Robin and if it's Carrie Kelley, that fire would turn into a raging inferno.

On this version of Kelley, writer Peter J. Tomasi shared the following with the NY Post, "She's a college kid who's got spunk and speaks her mind. This is not an alternate-earth Robin, this is simply a girl named Carrie Kelley, who we learn knew Damian, which in turn weaves her into the fabric of the DC Universe for the first time in 25 years. What you'll find out once you crack the book, is that she's not exactly the ‘new Robin,’ but I don't want to spoil the story and her introduction into Bruce Wayne/Batman's life.

In regards to how long she'll be around, let's just say that it's a helluva lot longer than ‘one issue.’ I've got plans for Carrie that play well into the future. It's all in continuity. It's all part of the Batman universe in the here and now. Carrie Kelley has found her way into The New 52 and she's here to stay - in what capacity is anybody's guess - except mine of course."

As I mentioned above, after all the guest stars in Batman and Robin, the title will theoretically revert back to it's original name and that means we'll need an actual Robin to appear in the book. Snyder has stated that he 'never intended for Harper Row' to become Robin, which is not the same as saying she won't don a variation of the familiar red, green and gold costume when the time comes. Add in a character like Carrie Kelley and the picture becomes much less clear but is this a smoke screen or will Kelley really fight side-by-side with Batman in The New 52 just as she did in The Dark Knight Returns? We should find out by September at the very latest.

On the darkest of nights, who is the one person Batman meets that could change his life forever?

Some people seem to not grasp the concept of alternate timeline... The Dark Knight Returns is just another Elseworld, a good one, but just that.. Not actual continuity.

Though i think Batman should go solo for once.. enaugh kid Robins already, maybe make him team up with Nightwing instead.

Wasn't the point of the reboot was to de-age the caharcaters and make the universe/timeline LESS cluttered- now they're adding yet ANOTHER 'Robin'? For a whole 'new' DCU, they sure do keep going back to the old well a hell of a lot.

For What reason? DC has totally [frick]ed with the roster of Robins so much in the new 52 and bumped people out of place.

How is it that Batman can get over his sidekicks' deaths so fast? He moved on from Jason Todd to Tim Drake within a year, and now his own son has died and he'll have a replacement in like a month! Batman you emotionless wretch!

Wait, wait, wait. Isn't this DC's WTF month (seriously, guys?)? I'll bet this is just for shock value, but she just makes a cameo at a party or something like it shows in the picture.

Harper Row has practically been set up for Robin, how could she not be?!

Don't believe this for anything! Harper wouldn't make a good robin anyway, maybe a Bat related character under his wing. She seems to independent and strong a character, more like a pupil than a robin. I can't see Carrie being Robin in the New 52 sorry

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO They Kill off Damian to bring back Carrie? She is not even conceived yet plus she wasn't even a good Robin. She did just good enough to let Batman "die".

Glad to see Damien gone. Hopefully he stays dead for a long, long time. Forever is a good start, throughout all multiverses. Most annoying character ever.

But isn't this a bit soon to be rushing in a new Robin? And this one specifically? I have nothing against Kelly as a character, but I just don't see how she fits into regular continuity without messing up Dark Knight REturns, which is one of those stories that shouldn't be tinkered with. And the art on that splash page is awful! My bet is this is just another cheap stunt to get the internet buzzing and try to dredge up some sales.

I just hope they dont make her into "Catgirl" like in 2001's The Dark Knight Strikes Back. I hated that costume with the whiskers...
LeonNova
LeonNova - 4/5/2013, 11:36 AM
I don't know if I love this idea, it's a cool nod to TDKR but I don't think her as a Robin should be the status quo. I like Harper Row, and I was looking forward to her becoming Batman's new partner. Not even a Robin, give her her own original moniker.
Tevii
Tevii - 4/5/2013, 11:37 AM
I have a feeling this wont be more than a few issues with her.
they are capitalizing on the batman and robin theme by having Batman team up with ALL his Robins including carrie. but NONE will stay.
its just for the WTF stuff they are doing

Isn't it waaaay to early to introduce CK yet? She'd at the very least be a toddler, unless they pull a Smallville Jimmy Olsen.
