James Gunn Researching the Original GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Team?

James Gunn, who has been hired to write/direct Marvel's upcoming space epic, revealed on his official facebook page that he has been reading the 1990's run on "Guardians of the Galaxy". What does this mean for the film?

Via his official facebook page, James Gunn revealed that he is indeed going back and reading the 1990's run of "Guardians of the Galaxy" in preparation for writing and directing the film adaptation. You can read what he said here:

"Rereading old Guardians books, I came upon this villain from Guardians of the Galaxy #1 (1990 run). Although I'm not discussing anything having to do with the Guardians movie, I will say the odds of Taserface making an appearance are quite low."


Although his post was joking at the unlikelihood of minor villain Taserface making an appearance, it does confirm that the writer/director has been doing his research. If he is looking at the original team, what does that mean for the upcoming film? Is there a possibility of time travel and the inclusion of the original members? Sound off below!


Guardians of the Galaxy is an upcoming space epic film produced by Marvel, as part of "Phase 2" of their Cinematic Universe. Although much of the plot is under wraps at this point, it has been confirmed the film will follow a team of space heroes consisting of Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Groot, and Rocket Raccoon. The film is also set to heavily feature Thanos, the villain teased at the end of Marvel's The Avengers. Written and directed by Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy is set to be released May 16, 2014.

That would be awesome if they had a flashback or prelude of the original team but the new GOTG would make a better full length film hands down.

bringing starhawk & vance astro into this movie from the 31st century would be f*ckin amazing.

this is my most anticipated movie of phase 2,second only to the avengers 2.

I would personally like to see Beta Ray Bill as a member of Guardians of the Galaxy but I doubt it will happen...

How would that work if the original team is from the future? The new guardians ARE the original guardians in terms of timeline.

Good. Do it like the 2004-2008 Annihilation series, the original GOTG are getting the hell beaten out of them and they send a member back in time to tell the GOTG (Current team, Star-Lord, Groot, Drax, Rocket, etc) about how to avoid it.

Well lets assume he is working for the trilogy, he is probably just looking for more members of the team to add on for the future. More so than any other Marvel film to date, I beleive there will be death's in Guardians of The Galaxy. Aside from Star Lord And Rocket Racoon, all of these guys are expedable as the team has no hardened identity allowing more freedom. Fully expect Drax the Destroyer to die at the hands of Thanos

I noticed his statement says "REREADING old Guardians books"

I asked him if he meant that he had read those when he was younger and he answered yes. That is also a good sign.

"What does this mean for the film?" It probably means he cares about his job. Also that he doesn't think his artistic vision is so vastly superior that he can't learn anything from the source material.

This is a good thing.

Box office bomb

Can't wait to say "I told you so", when the box office numbers come in. GOTG doesn't deserve a film ahead of several other characters that Marvel's got the rights to.

I still have the entire run of the original team, love that series. I liked Starhawk as well but the he/she storyline of starhawk may be a bit much in a movie...

The current team he's working with is great to introduce together. They can really just focus on Star Lord and Thanos. Rocket & Groot don't require a whole lot of back story (that can be expanded later). Both Drax & Gamora are tied to Thanos so they work naturally in the story.

I really don't know much about GG which is a first for a comic book movie for me. So I'm definitely looking forward to it.

I think the War of king roster is great and they should you sit cause the character seems more grounded to the reality and more interesting than the old guardian of the galaxy members

I just hope they get Star-Lords helmet right. I think Rocket Racoon can carry half the movie. Drax the Detroyer will kill Thanos even with the Infinity Gaunlet. And I sure hope Nova is dating Gamora in the movie. I would like to see a cameo of Ronan the Accuser with a quick tie-in of some Kree Ships. Major Vance Astro plays a key part in the series, but Kevin Fiege already said Major Astro will not be in it. Hands down this film will be BADASS.

MARVEL BRINGS SPACE INTO THE FOLD IN PHASE 2..NOBODY ELSE IS DOING IT AND AS USUAL AFTER IT DROPS AND MAKES A FORTUNE EVERYONE WILL COME OUT WITH THEIR OWN VERSION OF A SPACE EPIC.

@ETPHHM1 where did Kevin say Vance would not be in it? I dont recall hearing that anywhere and believe me i have been paying attention.

The closest statement was the movie would be more Star-Lord's and less Vance's...what that means to me is there is a chance the team will include one or two members from Vance's team but in the end would include more members from the new team

Well worse case scenario, if Fox desides to be tools and hold on to the F4 franchise so they can b@stardize it yet again in order to turn another miniscule profile.

Marvel/Disney could replace The Negative Zone's Annihilation Wave with Dormammu and his dimension of demons/creatures/whatever. And Nova could replace Silver Surfer in the Cosmic universe and actually be what DC's Green Lantern couldn't.

Just find an anti-Ryan Reynolds who hasn't been a part of 3 failed comicbook films and work form there...

Old or new team, I really can't see this C-List title being able to hold its own as a major motion picture. Rocket Racoon??? Seriously? Didnt they learn their lesson from Howard the Duck?

The Korvac Saga (if done as per the original comics) would mean he's from the future...

Bringing a bit of story fromt he comics, a perfect excuse for Vance/Starhawk maybe to appear from the future looking for the present day guardians and giving them their name.
