Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark Musical in Trouble (Thank God!)

Reports have been coming in for the last week or two that upcoming Broadway musical Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark is in trouble.

After the Disney buyout, news hit that the Marvel wasn't dumping any more money into the musical--which was already past 45 million, and it was announced that production had been suspended and that the stars had been released from their contracts.

U2's Bono immediately jumped in and has been raising money to keep the sure-to-be-bomb afloat, and it is said to still have an opening date of March 2010 at The Hilton Theater in New York City.

Producer David Garfinkle has been scrambling to get a new dose of financing to get the ball rolling again.

It's survival doesn't seem too likely.

First, I was kind of excited to see what was going to happen with this. I hate U2 but Julia Taymor has done some good shit. Lion King and Across the Universe are pretty dope. It could have been a good dark interpretation of Spider-Man. Oh well if it tanks. I'll just wait for Mormon: The Musical

You're right, LEEE777. I read this article on here a month ago, BEFORE the Disney news!
The Spider-Man musical goes away, Finally.
Producers for the musical run out of money just in time.

Axl - 9/15/2009, 10:48 AM
I don't think it would have been any good at all. What will be next? Rambo: The Musical? lol
necrosage2005 - 9/15/2009, 10:51 AM
Isnt this very old news? Didnt they say about a month ago that it just isnt happening anymore?
JaySchluffy - 9/15/2009, 10:54 AM
this looked cool, i just saw a musical about zombies and that worked, and it was hardly a big budget affair like this.
fotc - 9/15/2009, 11:20 AM
I could see it working as a play. Not as a musical though. =\
BmanHall - 9/15/2009, 11:28 AM
if it was funny enough it could be a musical. I can't imagine it as a play without being a musical.
fotc - 9/15/2009, 11:34 AM

Even if I was interested in this Bono and the Edge would have killed it for me. They are the turd flavored icing on an ass cake.

Roscoe182 - 9/15/2009, 2:26 PM
Giving Spiderman a musical is like giving KISS a Christmas special, it was just weird. Plus singing through a mask; well...
Spiderman: "Ogh MahJahn ah wuf oo. Ogh MahJahn ah Neeh oo."
Gobby: "BAH!! Shef beh mih! HAHAHA!!!"

nerosday - 9/15/2009, 2:32 PM
Awwww I wanted to see it's glorious badness.
Betty - 9/15/2009, 2:38 PM
Betty, by God, you still have one of my Favorite avatars around. lol
nerosday - 9/15/2009, 3:50 PM
It states in this weeks Entertainment Weekly that the play is not canceled, they had changed one or two cast members that's all. The play is still in production and the reviews that I've read have been good. Get your info right please.
retr0g0dfather - 9/15/2009, 4:47 PM
[frick]ing Spiderman took Young Frankenstein's theatre away from them
Crazyhorrormovienerd - 9/15/2009, 5:14 PM
Have raimi direct this as well, he seems to know how to do musicals....
access - 9/15/2009, 7:09 PM
The show may be having financial difficulty, but it hasn't been canceled yet. I check CBM everyday, and I check broadway.com everyday. It's still on there.

Also, @crazyhorrormovienerd - the arrival of Spiderman the Musical had absolutely nothing to do with Young Frankenstein closing.
beckala63 - 9/15/2009, 7:35 PM
@beckala indeed u are right but its a shame its still going forward i think its guna bomb big time..

this sucks pissin singing is not wot i think about wen i think spiderman nor do i think boner shud b alive bt hay thats just me
Roscoe182 - 9/15/2009, 7:50 PM
@beckala63- I know still they're taking their theatre....sorry i'm a Mel Brooks fan. Young Frankenstein was a hell of a show to put on visually, and sadly it wasn't getting the audiences it deserved.

Regardless I have a feeling Spider-man will be in and out quickly
Crazyhorrormovienerd - 9/15/2009, 8:46 PM
@Crazyhorrormovienerd - I agree, Young Frankenstein was a really fun show and The Producers was one of the best.

I'm not really sure how I feel about the Spiderman musical...On one hand, it is combining my two interests/hobbies...but on the other hand I'm not sure how great of an idea that is, lol
beckala63 - 9/15/2009, 9:41 PM
i think it would be interesting. why do u all hate it?
Denn1s - 9/16/2009, 6:43 AM
somebody slap Bono in the face with an endangered monkey. keeping this grotesque musical alive is a sin.
Keven - 9/16/2009, 1:27 PM
THING IS..DISNEY, THEY COULD RE-IGNITE THIS
GUNSMITH - 9/16/2009, 2:24 PM
@beckala63- I agree. I love comics, and I love theater....don't know how well they go together though.
Crazyhorrormovienerd - 9/16/2009, 3:15 PM
Well, this goes to show that you can only leave crap floating for so long before somebody flushes the toilet.
