FAN-CASTS: How They Should Be Done. . ?

Hey guys! I know I haven't been on here as much as I used to but when I was I was all about the FAN-FIC section, more specifically FAN-CAST's. This is an article for you to help us improve the quality in the FAN-FIC section. Check it out and leave some feedback. Mr. Murdock

As many of you may know, I was a regular here a month or two ago but recently haven't had the time to get back on this great site! Anyway, what I want to ask you is this;

HOW CAN WE IMPROVE FAN-FIC?

Now many people contribute to FAN-FIC and its great! But... is it as good as it can be? I see regulars like LEEE777, Superdude001 and Josh Wilding just to mention a few doing solid FAN-CASTS but they all do them differently, they all have their own style which is great but it may confuse new-comers as how it should be done. Here we go...

Key Elements to a FAN-CAST;

1. PICTURES

When doing a FAN-CAST you NEED to have pictures. For example if I just wrote;

Joel Edgerton as Hawkman

Half of you wouldn’t know who I’m talking about and pictures help you imagine the actor in the role so you can understand where the poster/submitter is coming from.

Pictures show us whether the actor has the right look and build for the role (i.e. weight and height).

Now if I did this;

Joel Edgerton as Hawkman

Photobucket

Photobucket

It puts a clearer idea in your head doesn't it? This leads me onto the next thing...

2. HISTORY

History is a HUGE thing to me when doing a FAN-CAST. Not only history about the characters you are casting but also history about the actor/actress you have chosen to portray the character.

If you just have the name of the actor/actress and the character you want them to play you’re not going to get your point across about why that person is so well suited to the role and are therefore are more likely to get negative feedback.

Now if I did this;

Joel Edgerton: Edgerton is one of my favourite actors not only because he hails from my country (Australia) but he's such a diverse and gifted actor. He recently starred in the critically acclaimed Aussie Crime/Drama Animal Kingdom alongside Guy Pearce and Ben Mendelsohn. However, it was his heroic role as Gawain in King Arthur that convinced me he would own this role.

It would help you understand why I think he is fitted to the role.

Even a short list of movies they've starred in would be a great addition!

A short Bio of the character would also go along nicely. For example;

Hawkman: There have been many versions of Hawkman. Usually related in some way to the planet Thanagar, Hawkman traditionally wields weapons of archaic origin and wears large wings that grant him flight. Recently, Carter Hall died at the beginning of Blackest Night and was resurrected at the end.

3. REFERENCE

If when making a cast you use a choice someone has already stated, reference them! In your article state that they gave you the idea. For example; I wouldn't claim the pick of Bradley Cooper as Guy Gardner as this casting choice has been posted all over this site!

Also when making a FAN-CAST try to use as much ORIGINALITY as you can. For example if you’re making a Superman FAN-CAST try not to cast Brandon Routh, Tom Welling or even Henry Cavill as Supes because they are all frequently posted and I'm pretty sure everybody has seen them by now.

Also a big deal is REPOSTING ARTICLES. It's unfair and slack to keep reposting articles that many people have already seen and it just makes people angry and ruins the site. Especially when you put A LOT of effort into your work, it just gives people the shits.

Another big thing is SPELLING. Make sure to always spell check your article, you'd be surprised at how many mistakes you actually make. Now it isn't such a big deal in a FAN-CAST but in story writing it is! I'm sure your Word Document program would have one.

4. PRESENTATION

Now presentation may not seem like such a big deal but in my opinion it is! Presentation makes it a lot easier to read and even if some users don't like your Actor/Character matchup choice than they may still give you positive feedback about your layout. Trust me; it's happened to me plenty of times!

It shows that it's not just a five-second job and that you actually took time and put a lot of thought into your article. To improve the presentation of your article you can;

Make certain sections BOLD, ITALIC, UNDERLINED or even centre your writing!

To do the following simply delete the spaces between the letters and symbols and enter your text in the middle. :)

Bold = < b >(Text Here)< / b >
Italic = < i >(Text Here)< / i >
Underline = < u >(Text Here)< / u >
Centre = < center >(Text Here)< / center >

What you could also do is frame your pictures together. It doesn't have to be anything to fancy but it certainly does look a lot better and more organised.

It only takes about 2 minutes (if that) to make it nice, neat and organised with frame using PHOTOBUCKET.

Change The Colour of Your Writing! Change certain parts of your article to whatever colour you want; RED, BLUE, GREEN, you name it!

Just Delete The Spaces :)

Colour Change = < font(Leave A Space)color = (Colour Here)>(Text Here)< / font >

Although too much brightly coloured text can be really annoying so take it easy on the colours and don't over-do it.

5. FINISH

Okay, now with all that in mind I'm sure you guys could come up with a lot of creativity within that. They're just the basics. Follow those guidelines and I'm sure it'll make FAN-FIC a better place.

Something along the lines of this would be great!

LEEE777 - 12/26/2010, 7:11 AM
GR8 stuff @ MM!!!

Totally agree with it all, but nothing wrong with casting Routh or Cavill for their Supernman picks if thats what they want lol! ; D

Yeah casting Welling tho is wrong haha, but totally agree, original picks does make the casting sweeter, even tho I'm a huge fan of Routhy, or Cavil for that matter, tried to cast Yeoman etc to see what works.

Gotta say, top marks if ppl just read this and/or the CBM fan-fic guidelines they can't go to far wrong, thumbs up!

An uh oh, u got the cat outta the bag with colors/bold etc lol! ; P

MrAnonymous haha, no problem mate.

LEEE777 Cheers man, I see your point about the casting but seriously, lately alot of people have had almost the exact same cast.

Fair enough but It sorta shows that they haven't but a lot of thought into it, not all the time just sometimes.

Haha, thanks mate!

Obi No problem, and I'll be sure to check out your cast.

Intruder No Worries :)

Nice work, will definitely help me polish off fan casting, as I'm fairly new to the concept.
MrMurdock - 12/27/2010, 3:12 AM
Bastar Thanks. Hope it helps. :)

Good article. A simple rationale as to why a certain actor is being chosen is a good point.
Also, perhaps you might agree, but I highly recommend down-sampling images. This essentially means setting the image resolution to 72dpi. If images have a really high res, then it takes longer for the article and images to download.
Unfortunately, not everyone has access to a photo manipulating software like Photoshop, but there are online Photoshop-like applications that one can use (just Google it).

SuperDude001 - 12/27/2010, 2:09 PM
Great article dude, good to see someone fully explaining how it should be done, so it just doesn't fit the CBM guidelines and actually looks good aswell. Although I still don't fully understand how to change the colour of the text, but still fantastic article dude and very helpful!
JoshWilding - 12/27/2010, 6:44 PM
Fantastic article MrMurdock. This is the best guide to fan casts that I've ever seen done on CBM. :)
TheMyth - 12/28/2010, 3:31 AM
Spelling and grammar are two things I'm adamant about. I will literally stop reading an article because of these issues, and will avoid specific User's articles because I know that individual cares little for spelling and grammar. With a computer, there is no reason aside from laziness that people should have misspelled words in their articles and good grammar is easy to grasp if you just take your time and proof read your articles when writing.
MrMurdock - 12/28/2010, 4:24 AM
6of13 Thanks man, and yeah that's not a bad idea!

Yeahh, I don't even use Photoshop. I use either Photobucket or Photoscape, both are great though.

SuperDude001 Thanks mate! Yeahh, it's a bit difficult to explain. Just google it.

JoshWThanks man! I thought it was long overdue for a guide of how to do it. Well glad you like it :)

Cheers man!

TheMyth I know right, it just gives me the shits. I shows that they don't put alot of effort into it and just throw it up as soon as they can.

Great article, sir. As much as I love writing reviews, I love doing Fancasts even more. I do have one issue though: Originality for originality-sake is not the way to go for a Fancast. If someone wants to cast Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne or Brandon Routhe as Superman, then more power to them. 1 thing I fully appreciate in this article is your notion to give props to the person who inspired you to make a particular choice. Fantastic work, indeed...

Thank you. Informative article... This is what I like to read!
MrMurdock - 8/14/2011, 12:49 AM
teabag, sorry man. I'll be sure to add that in next time ;)

Despero Glad I'm not the only one.. cheers man.

RedNTheHood - 8/14/2011, 12:00 PM
thanks for saying how to change the color.
superbatspiderman - 8/14/2011, 6:10 PM
This is a very good article. I hope all noobs on this site listen to this very thoroughly because I get pissed when people make half assed fancasts with no pics or any type of explanation on why they picked the character. Also Mr. Murdock I think you have very well put together casts you must put a lot of time into them.
RedNTheHood - 8/17/2011, 7:23 AM
How do you do links?
MaddMonkk - 11/10/2011, 4:31 PM
