Sitting down with IGN, Michael Fassbender (X-Men: Days of Future Past), the star of the upcoming film adaptation based on the long-running Assassin's Creed video game franchise, talked about the film's current status. He reveals that he is still involved, the script is still being worked on, as well as their desire to "respect" the source material and his thoughts on Justin Kurzel (Macbeth) as a director.

"I know, I love these rumors! It's fantastic. People talk about it, and they're hopefully interested. Nothing has changed, yeah. I'm still a part of Assassin's Creed, and we're working on the script as we speak. Actually, I'm going to go back and see the writers when I get back to Europe.

You know, we absolutely want to respect the game. There's so much cool stuff in the game that we're actually spoiled for choice in terms of what we can use and what we can't, but we also want to bring new elements to it and perhaps our own version of things that already exist in the game. But we're definitely making a feature film, and we're approaching it as a feature film, as opposed to approaching it as a video game. But I love the world. I don't really play that many video games, but when I met up with the guys from Ubisoft and they started to explain this whole world and the idea of DNA memory -- you know, I think it's a very feasible scientific theory. I just thought, "This is so rich," and about the possibility of it being this cinematic experience. So I'm really excited about it, and we're working very hard to make sure that we've got the best and most exciting, original package.

I just think that there's one thing Justin [Kurzel] should be doing, and that's directing. I know that from working with him on Macbeth. He's just fantastic in terms of his vision. Adam, the DP that he works with, is amazing. They've got a great shorthand -- that's essential. He's fantastic with actors and each department. He's a real heavyweight."

The script has undergone rewrites first by Scott Frank (The Wolverine) and more recently, Adam Cooper and Bill Collage (Exodus: Gods and Kings) from a draft written by first-time screenwriter, Michael Lesslie. Daniel Espinosa was in talks to direct before Kurzel entered discussions. Fassbender is currently the only cast member, though Olivia Munn has publicly expressed interest in a role.

Fassbender, Frank Marshall (Jurassic World) and Connor McCaughan are all on board as producers. This will be the first film from Ubisoft Motion Pictures, who will be co-producing it with New Regency. The film was originally set to be distributed by Sony Pictures but the current distributor is now 20th Century Fox.

Assassin's Creed is scheduled to be released in 3D on August 7, 2015.

He's really invested in this project, I hope it's good.
Klone - 8/8/2014, 5:40 PM
Third Crusade was the most interesting period.
MexicanSuperman - 8/8/2014, 5:41 PM
Fassbender is great even in a shit film. I just want to see Altair story in the first movie and then make up their own assassin ancestors in the sequel.
SauronsBANE - 8/8/2014, 5:44 PM
I loved the Ezio/Desmond-centric games and I haven't played anything after Revelations...but from the sound of it, the franchise has gone downhill ever since. I hope the movie starts off with Altair's storyline from the first game, then focuses on Ezio. They could completely drop the modern-day aspect of it, and I wouldn't care all that much.
Klone - 8/8/2014, 5:45 PM
@SauronBANE

It has. AC3... eh, good in some parts. And AC4...

AC has always missed some good opportunities for story, etc. but none were ever awful.
DrunkenNukem - 8/8/2014, 5:47 PM
This movie won´t come out next year...
Klone - 8/8/2014, 5:47 PM
War of the Roses, World War One, something from Roman history, ancient African (Carthage), revisiting one of the earlier Crusades, Egyptian history.
DrunkenNukem - 8/8/2014, 5:48 PM
AC IV its a great game, better than III and "Revelations"
TheShape - 8/8/2014, 5:49 PM
Fassbender you're my [frick]ing idol, best [frick]ing actor right now!!!!!
SauronsBANE - 8/8/2014, 5:51 PM
The one thing AC will always have in its favor is the fact that it has SO MANY options to change the period of history. They've barely scratched the surface of the cool time periods to play in. Hopefully the writers for the movie manage to whip up a smart script and put together some kind of overarching plot. I always loved the mythology of the story (gods like Minerva showing up, etc), and the conspiracy/thriller aspect will be awesome to see in a movie.

Along with Halo, this has the best potential to be the first great movie based on a video game.
Denn1s - 8/8/2014, 5:53 PM
Hopefully they will introduce a new character in the film. Having played all the games, seeing the movie will offer nothing new if they adapt the Desmond storyline.
TuckstheHalls - 8/8/2014, 5:53 PM
I forgot they were making this

memory is unavailable at this current time
Klone - 8/8/2014, 5:56 PM
The overarching plot line has gotten... well it seems as if it's all been made up as they go along. Like they have no idea what they are doing.

Also, if you like Altair, read Secret Crusade. Far more detailed and better than the extended stuff in ACR.
Tainted87 - 8/8/2014, 6:00 PM
Never played Assassin's Creed. Some stalker wanted me to go out with her and bought that and Call of Duty for me, but I just returned 'em. I've kind of put video games behind me now, but I can totally appreciate their fanbase.... which is MASSIVE. Maybe when the movie comes out, considering the Fassbender's in it, I'll have an intro to the game of sorts. Hope it's good.
NovaCorpsFan - 8/8/2014, 6:04 PM
Fassbender should renounce his acting career, he just referred to Macbeth as Macbeth instead of The Scottish Play.
Kurban - 8/8/2014, 6:25 PM
@SauronsBANE

@Klone

I personally think it's been getting better, ACIII being a slight misstep. I thought ACIV was great and Unity and Rogue look like they're gonna be great, too. The only parts that suck, in my opinion, is the modern day shit and that's always been there. But ACIV made it sort of entertaining and I understand why they can't just cut it out so oh well.
OpticBlastWins - 8/8/2014, 6:30 PM
This shiit needs to happen already
Scorn - 8/8/2014, 6:34 PM
I hate all the modern day and DNA memory stuff, I wish it was just about assassins through different time periods.
AsgardianHobo - 8/8/2014, 6:59 PM
I really like the game, but they just saturated the gaming community with these constant releases.

Hope the movie can lift the Assassin's Creed name to new heights!
DeusExSponge - 8/8/2014, 7:23 PM
Klone - The Classical Antiquity era would be absolutely amazing! Although Rome has already been explored, I would love to see Rome in all of it's glory. Heck other empires from that era would be great as well.
KingNTheKong - 8/8/2014, 8:23 PM
@Klone

Ancient Egypt would be SOOOO dope.
DeathMaker07 - 8/8/2014, 9:05 PM
Fassbender is the only reason I am looking forward to this glad to hear he wants to stay loyal to the source material.
SniktBub - 8/8/2014, 9:11 PM
"Hate the player not the game."
SniktBub - 8/8/2014, 9:12 PM
I'm looking forward to this. I've played every game so far and plan on playing Rogue when it comes out.
Destined - 8/8/2014, 9:20 PM
Fassbender will SLAY this role!
Snooper - 8/8/2014, 9:21 PM
Game is a shitheap so..
MightyZeus - 8/8/2014, 9:33 PM
Would have been great if the film where adapting "Black Flag". Only Assassin Creed game i've really enjoyed.
KingRainbow - 8/8/2014, 10:14 PM
Who the heck is he? I'm not sure about all of these happy people, but isn't he a little old to play Desmond?

He could play Conner, though... You know, if he was tanned :/ Maybe even Ezio...
TheSonOfKrypton - 8/9/2014, 12:05 AM
. Feudal Japan
. Ancient Greece
. Ancient Egypt
. WW1/WW2
Daddydeadpool - 8/9/2014, 1:32 AM
Pretty sure the devs said they would never go near certain time periods like ancient egypt , feudal Japan and either of the world wars. Think a feudal Japan one would be epic thou or a Victorian London based one where you have to hunt down jack the ripper who's a templar
TelaVizion - 8/9/2014, 3:29 AM
Smh, the movie should be like the comics and focus on other bloodlines, not Desmond's. I hope it's all new characters in the movie.
Klone - 8/9/2014, 3:35 AM
@TheReddestHood

[frick] yes. I'm not greatly versed on Egyptian history, but the details I do... would be awesome.
MrNiklander - 8/9/2014, 6:34 AM
I kinda lost interest in Assasin's Creed 4 I was kinda hoping to see what Juno would unleash to the humans once she was released but nothing.I am semi interested for the movie
MrNiklander - 8/9/2014, 6:35 AM
I am still going that he will play Desmond's father
Floke - 8/9/2014, 7:42 AM
I find the lack of ninjas in this series disturbing... Or a norse mercenary/assassin in 900 ad Europe
HBarnill - 8/9/2014, 10:27 AM
The doctor called me, and he told me that I'm sick and that my medicine is more Kristen Bell.
Facade - 8/9/2014, 11:05 AM
The early AC games had a stronger Desmond presence than Black Flag, but BF is by far the best AC game to date.
Enki - 8/9/2014, 3:05 PM
As long as Fassbender is in it, you can count me in. Every performance he gives is beyond spectacular.
MetalGearZero - 8/9/2014, 8:28 PM
Nice read - I'm looking forward to this.
souNdwAve89 - 8/9/2014, 10:54 PM
You can tell that the writers didn't know how to handle the modern day portion post-Brotherhood when Patrice Desilets left Ubisoft. Desmond and the modern day portion had great potential, especially from a company that created Splinter Cell and Watch_Dogs. Yeah, say what you want about Watch_Dogs, but it wasn't a bad game that so many whiners made it out to be. It's a shame that anything modern day related since AC4 Black Flag has served nothing but fan service and easter eggs for hardcore fans. At this point, they are better off dropping the modern day altogether unless they have something good cooked up for Unity and Rogue.
