EDITORIAL: Are Women Just There To Be Sexy?
As a newcomer to this online gents club, I'll have a go at answering the obvious question of why are women in comic book movies these days. Is it because they are valued additions to the plot or because we need eye candy?
Let’s compare two of the most successful comic book movies to date, the Dark Knight Rises and the Avengers. Notice a common similarity? *cough* leather boobs *cough* Black Widow and Catwoman, a sub-species of the unusual and hard to get right creature that is the female in a comic book movie. Us nerds know that these characters are more than simple sex appeal... most- no, some of the time... maybe... where was I? Oh yeah, but ask Guy General and Amy Audience what they thought about the characters and, instead of a well thought out comment about the characters and their motivation and their feelings, you'd probably get a comment like this, "OMG! They wuzz banging! Skin tight leather suits #ftw So sexy I can’t even... ugggghh...” *drools, gurgles and then faints*
Look at Catwoman and ask yourself, who even is she? Well, you think, she's Catwoman isn't she? She's Batman's girlfriend and a sexy cat-burglar. She was brought back to life by cats or something right?
Catwoman’s only use in the DKR was to be Bruce Wayne’s girlfriend once he had finally retired from being Batman. She was a sexy-burglar with very little back-story or motivation who ultimately changed to being a goodie because there’s a storm coming or something...
I’m not picking on the movie as I enjoyed the DKR. I also enjoyed the Avengers, but Black Widow feels entirely tacked on because they need a sexy female member on the team. Lots of images have all the Avengers looking heroic by facing their enemies in the battle of New York... except for Black Widow who is either posing or seems to think the Chitauri will be intimidated by the sight of her rear...
Let’s shift from movies with female superheroes in them to full on super-heroine movies. Those rubbish pieces of trash movies, I feel they all fall into one of two categories:
1)Reversal of the male hero and damsel in distress story. For instance Supergirl, that gosh-darn awful Superman spinoff, whereby the third act Supergirl is trying to save her love interest from- I dunno, a witch or something? I was drunk at the time.
2)Listen lass, just look pretty and we’ll call it a movie. Can’t get Michelle Pfeiffer back? Screw it! Let’s get Halle Berry in a very stupid leather suit, have her act like a cat and not even research the character slightly, going completely off the origin in Batman Returns. I needed a magical cat to bring me back to life after this movie left me brain dead.
With DC/WB still neglecting to give us a Wonder Woman movie, let’s hope Marvel can give us the first good female superhero movie.
Anyway, enough mindless ranting. Without giving a flip side to this argument (because I can’t think of a great one) let’s just agree that most female superheroes, love-interests, etc are partially there for the sex appeal. If not almost entirely there for the sex appeal. Gotta attract that certain male demographic, am I right? But ultimately, is this such a bad thing? Comic books always make sure to exploit a woman’s curves so why shouldn't movies? It’s not pornography (that Watchmen scene with Night-Owl and Silk Specter ignored... hallelujah!) and heck I've read worse comics than movies. Look up Batman: the Cat and the Bat which shows Batgirl and Catwoman’s first meeting. A fun little story with a NAKED CAT-FIGHT!
Cue appropriate meme.
You can stop reading this now and go look it up... if you haven’t already.
You’re still here? Good. Where was I? Oh yeah, Zack Synder. Does that man love big muscly men or what? Why do Spartans even need armor when they have abs as hard as steel. Speaking of steel: shirtless superman! Look at that guy! If Batman/Superman is one big “v.s.” movie, good luck to Batman. Supes could cripple B-man just by flexing. Don’t feel sorry for Batman, he’ll just brood it off.
So men can have sex appeal in movies as well... this being no surprise to you. So why shouldn't women? Its escapism: what guy or girl hasn't fantasized about being a sexy superhero? The problem is when women are just pretty cardboard cut-outs to only be gawked at.
Now I’m sure I have highlighted nothing new here. If anything this could be one of the worst editorials the site has ever seen. For that I am sorry. This was my first time. I can get much better with practice, I promise! At least I didn't just write my theory on Avengers: AoU or what I think should happen in Batman/Superman. No those articles are coming next ;)
Thanks for reading. If you have anything to say on this pretty self-explanatory topic, chat away in the comments section below. Cheerio!
